Re: [Police] Sting on Oprah
Does it really matter who sold more? We were lucky enough to have him in the world's best band, and then lucky enough to have him go solo and succeed. Can you imagine if all three of them just disappeared into the wordwork after dissolving the Police? If I can't have the Police, I'm happy having them solo. Call me the eternal optimist. Yes, Oprah mentioned that Sting sold 40 million albums with The Police and another 45 million as a solo artist. Also, Sting played EBYT and Roxanne.
I do think it noteworthy, that the Police sold most of their over the span of 6 years. Sting as a solo artist, has had 18 years.
The raw numbers in themselves mean relatively little. I'd like to see a proper graph of sales versus time progression, to see at which point Sting started selling more than the Police. I'd also be interested to see how the "Sting & the Police" compilations were counted. There's a whole bunch more stuff than can be said about Sting vs. The Police (I mean this in a comparative sense, and I don't mean to imply any sense of antagonism), but if people are going to compare Stings solo with The Police, then I'd like them to restrict to recent times. It would be genuinely interesting to work out which songs in a live set got the greatest audience reaction, Sting or Police songs; hell, I'd be interested in seeing the figures for back-catalogue sales, assuming we had a year where the figures weren't sullied by re-issues and other promotional gambits. i concur with Ms. Michelle on this. we are indeed lucky to still have sting around in any shape of form, still producing music - my only hope/contention being that the material is up to snuff. for me, i asked the question out of what's been a life spent defending the police as a band to people, demanding them to be recognized as, for my money, the single greatest band ever - this my virtually everyone i have ever gotten into a discussion about music with. rightly or wrongly, i feel that the legacy of the police is not held in as high a regard to the world outside this wegpage - that they are blown off and/or taken for granted, that their uniqueness has not been given its just due. i mean, the rock and roll hall of fame induction was nice, but i think there should be more. so, admitted, i get a bit annoyed when i - again, correctly or incorrectly - see interviews with sting steered away from even the smallest amount of discussion on the police, when i see sting perform in concert and hear only 4 police songs in a 25-song set or things of that nature. i hope to be rewarded for this righteousness on day... rich p.s.: i'm listening to SACRED LOVE as i type this out, here comes "dead man's rope". my reward comes early... --- Stingfan222@aol.com wrote:

Comon, Sting wrote all the songs. Do you think the Police would have been the greatest band with songs like "Mother"? Sting was the Police!!! Sting was the Police!!! Refusing to accept that fact is pure denial of reality and fact! Hmmmmmmmmm! Whilst Sting may have written the bulk of the band's music it was the Andy and Stewart that breathed life into them - therefore Sting couldn't have been the Police on his own. If you have it, have a look at the Monseratt Doco where Jools Holland interviews the band. The difference between Sting and Andy playing message, is light years. Andy shaped that song, Sting may have written it but its Andy's playing which gives it its edge. In fact at one stage during the doco Sting makes mention of Andy being the guitairst in the band. I'd bet most of the songs Sting presented to the other two as demos sound totally different as fininshed product, once Stewart and Andy finished with them. In fact I'd pay more money to see and hear Andy play jazz than to hear Sting anytime!! My two pacific pesos! Mathew "I'm from a Land downunder....!"
I'd bet most of the songs Sting presented to the other two as demos sound totally different as fininshed product, once Stewart and Andy finished with them XX Sadly I used to think that was true, but over the years as I have acquired many of the demo sessions, it has been proven to be totally untrue. This is most evident on the Ghost in the Machine Demos. The Demos that sting took to the band, are virtually identical in every way to the finished product except for a drum machine, but even the drum machine programming is pretty similar to the end result. While I certainly am a huge Stewart fan ( of his drumming anyways), sadly what sting brought to the studio, was virtually what came out. I'd love to believe that Andy and Stu painted their colours all over the songs, but the fact actually is that they did not. Hi there, Yes of course: Sting was the Police. That's why he's making boring elevator music for the past decade. Why writing another WALKING ON THE MOON when you can do great dancefloor tunes like SYL... *ROTFL* Some may think that he was THE POLICE but his solo stuff has showed clearly that he wasn't. Sting was THE POLICE like Paul McCartney was THE BEATLES... Cheers, Joerg -----Original Message----- From: police-bounces@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Friday, October 31, 2003 10:10 AM To: police Subject: RE: [Police] Sting on Oprah Sting was the Police!!! My friend, Sting's music has progressed so much since the Police, I will not get into details, but if you are stuck in time and will only accept a Police sound, no problem, more power to you. The Police were an alchemy of three musicians - Sting could never be the Sting we know without Stewart and Andy...and he knows that very very well.... -----Messaggio originale----- Da: police-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:police-bounces@mailman.xmission.com]Per conto di Trini Inviato: venerdì 31 ottobre 2003 5.32 A: foxie; police Oggetto: Re: [Police] Sting on Oprah Comon, Sting wrote all the songs.
