I agree with what both you, Omaha and Giovanni are saying. I never got to see the Police in concert. I was in my teens when I got hooked on them, about the time Zenyatta came out. I remember a guy I knew in high school was going to see them and I was so envious, 'cause of course I wanted to go. Anyways, even though I have never experienced the Police 'live" per se, I am going through what I consider to be a "re-living of the past", vis-a-vis shows that other people recorded of the Police in various phases of their rise to no.1. I have been to Sting's solo concerts numerous times and have enjoyed them immensely, all the while waiting on pins and needles for that rare "Police tune" to find it's way onto Sting's set list, and when he would play one, that's when I would go crazy. The last time I saw Sting was in Denver two years ago and he played "Hole In My Life". This was the first time i had heard Sting play it and the first time I have heard him play anything other that the usual standard Police fare, IE. Roxanne or MIAB or EBYT, etc..!! I thought I was gonna lose my mind! It was incredible!! My buddy and I went nuts!! And I have to say, there were not many others in the crowd going as nuts as we were. Must have only been pure "Sting fans"!! Now, I am no artist, however, I know that I have some artistic tendencies running through me since I play bass(wonder why?) as well as sax, and have some drawing talents. I can understand Sting's desire to distance himself from the Police as much as possible. I can see that for him, the Police was almost a means to an end. For him, to be able to play and record the music he wants to and not have to bow to record companies desire to sell records. As much as I believe that, I would be nuts not to want to see them to get back together in any way, shape or form, whether it be an album or a tour. I see more problems with an album though, seeing as how they were pretty much at each others throats back in the day when they were just getting popular. Imagine the 3 of them now, trying to write songs with Sting's enormous ego getting in the way. Although, seeing as how they are just a bit older, I don't see them wrestling and beating on each other as much!! I think that a tour would probably be the best. When Sting played "Hole In My Life", I could sense that old Police intensity from Sting and that it would have been no problem for Stewart and Andy to slip onto the stage and jump right in without skipping a beat. I do think that for all of Sting's successes as a solo artist, he does need to remember where he came from and revisit his roots by having some kind of reunion with the boys. I think it is about time. And when it happens, I sure hope I get those front row seats.... I knew beforehand that I was going to meet the man and I had it in my head that I was going to tell him he NEEDED to get The Police back together. Sting signed a portrait I did of him, took a couple of photos with my friends and I and was just so genuinely NICE, I couldn't bring myself to say anything. It occurred to me, "He doesn't want to hear that. Who am I? I'm just some kid to him." I'm an artist and a writer, I totally understand that an artist is going to follow his own path despite what critics or even his fans have to say. I can respect that. I'll always love the man because of The Police, however it's been years now since I've been willing to spend money on his solo albums or concerts and I don't see that changing. The last time I saw Sting was in Denver two years ago and he played "Hole In My Life". Too bad he didn't play that song for the whole tour; I heard it on Itunes and it sounded great; I do agree with you about the energy, and the arrangement was very close to the original one, with just more richness of sound.
I can understand Sting's desire to distance himself from the Police as much as possible. There is a debate about this issue; when I talk with Stewart, or to his manager (he worked a lot with Sting on different issues), or to anyone in the entourage, the label, the management, they all say Sting wants to stay away from the word POLICE as much as possible....but I'm not that convinced about that; when I talk to Sting about The Police (very rarely I have to admit), or when I tell him something about Stewart or Andy he suddenly open his eyes with joy, you can see very well that he loves to think about the guys, about the band, he never try to 'avoid' the issue, on the contrary, he goes on, keep on talking, there is a marvelous spread of joy when we get into such a 'dangerous' word...or at least it's dangerous for everyone around him...I don't know if maybe in the past he gave them all the impression to try to forget such a glorious past, but sincerely, I'm pretty sure he must have changed his mind...you know getting older makes you think about the past with a different view, seeing children becoming adult, makes you see yourself in a different way...it happens to everybody, and Sting is no exception.
One little secret I want to share with you (guys, I'm not giving this information on any other forum, list, website, so pleasekeep it for yourself) is that all the graphics of the 'new' Police stuff coming out in 2007 (dvd, box set, cd's) are on the hands of Sting graphic entourage...and people keep on saying that Sting wants to stay away from The Police verb? That sounds great news ! There can never be enough Police material on the shelves, so any advance of material from the back catalogue ( in any shape or form ) is a welcome boost for everyone's collection.
