I hear you, Giovanni. I met Sting when I was 19, I believe it was the summer of 1990 when he was opening some stadium shows for The Grateful Dead. I knew beforehand that I was going to meet the man and I had it in my head that I was going to tell him he NEEDED to get The Police back together. Sting signed a portrait I did of him, took a couple of photos with my friends and I and was just so genuinely NICE, I couldn't bring myself to say anything. It occurred to me, "He doesn't want to hear that. Who am I? I'm just some kid to him." I'm an artist and a writer, I totally understand that an artist is going to follow his own path despite what critics or even his fans have to say. I can respect that. I'll always love the man because of The Police, however it's been years now since I've been willing to spend money on his solo albums or concerts and I don't see that changing. He's just gone a route that holds no interest to me. That's too bad, but that's his prerogative. Stewart and Andy however... Andy's solo albums are outstanding, it's always a treat to see him perform, and any opportunity to see Stewart behind the kit and I am there. Gizmo needs to play the States!

Same old debate...I'm sure we all would love to see the band live again, we
would of course see what most of the people won't be able to see and just
got the 'surface' of all of that....with our 'Police/Sting/Andy/Stewart'
knowledge, probably we would recognize all those 'little' things, we would
breath the 'culture' of wat they did in the past....something that most of
the critics probably won't see...you should consider that many media critics
were just ten years old on the early Eighties, they didn't 'live' their
times...fans could come back in time and get some culture just by taking
part of forums, talking with other fans, understanding something that people
working as journalist or media contacts in general couldn't get, reporting
then something that would need much more 'culture' as I said.
You also have to consider that a reunion tour is not only about 'fans', but
is mainly about the 'guys' in the band and you know how important for an
artist is to 'read' about what he does in the newspaper, read what critics
write...this is a heavy heavy heavy responsability, it's not easy to
'survive' to such ignorant feedback you may have, and I can tell you that a
reunion of THE POLICE could bring a flood of responses....I'm not sure Sting
would be that happy to read something like 'ok, this is the Sting we want',
or maybe 'what? The Police? They were big in the past, this is just a shadow
of what they did'...or similar...
As an artist you can just tell everybody 'fuck you, I do what I like and
that's it'....but it's not even easy to say that...
My opinion.

I'll take the tour! I've been saying it for years, and I'll say it again...
Stewart and Andy can certainly play as great as ever but I don't think Sting
has the material to make a strong Police album. I know I'm offending a lot
of Sting fans when I say these things but he's just grown too middle of the
road for me. I'll always prefer the fire of "young Sting" to what I now
refer to as "Easy Listening Sting". A Police live show, however? I'm
there!

If one were to happen (and only one), which would you prefer?
R.
PS: I'd choose album.
