Hi! Thanks to everyone who has reviewed SL here on this list, either positively or negatively. I really can't wait to listen to it, even though I know perfectly well what the people mean who say "you have to let it to grow in you". I had some problems of that kind with TST and BND (partially), while SC and MF sank in me since the minute one. Now something personal, I hope the folks will not mind. My husband just called me from downtown, he had bought SL, but promised not to open it until we'll meet. We both took the day off, now he will fetch me with his car, and we will drive about 100 km out of the capital (where we live) to a little but good restaurant on the remote seashore. On the way there and back we will listen the CD, and perhaps even once more while sitting in the car facing the seafront (the shore is already empty at this season here). We have kept this tradition since TST, even always with the same place. Today it's a beautiful sunny day here, very fresh air with 19 degrees, and the golden northern autumn... Definitely a day again I will remeber for ever. I just wanted to share my exitement of forthcoming afternoon. This is my way to enjoy good music, especially Sting. And btw, the lyrics were the first that drew me to Sting, even though English is for me a foreign tongue (and I'm a professional musician); however, my husband comes from Police-generation, so for him the first spark was probably the "mojo" someone mentioned here before... :-) Thanks to everyone for keeping up a good conversation here. Deb, Maggie, Ross and I flew in from Houston to Paris arriving around lunchtime today. Deb and Maggie were brave and strong, and went to the venue to pick up tickets, Ross and I were weak, pathetic, tired and grumpy and went to the hotel and slept. Out of all the events that Deb and I have gone to, this show was the most attended Sting get-together as far as the Usual Suspects go. Everyone was there, it was a veritable Sting geek fest. There was not really enough time to catch up with everyone, but as I have said in the past, there are many people that you run into at the shows, and virtually everyone that you can imagine was there. Usually I make a list of everyone, but I am scared to omit someone, so I won’t. Ok, 9pm, the lights drop, and…. Walking On The Moon – Started by Jason on the piano, and one by one the band members came out as their parts of the songs started. The band tonight consisted of Sting, Dom, Kip, Jason, Vinnie and a percussionist whose named escaped me. There were also two backing singers who were very good. Send Your Love – More raw than the album, and while it sounded good, it hasn’t yet found its flow yet, they did the ‘no religion’ with vocals only. Sting commented that he was surprised we all knew the words considering that the album just came out today, and asked if we bought bootlegs, a few people commented that the songs are on his website… and to think I went to Tokyo for nothing… Inside – I love this song, and while it was great live, the chorus does not have the same power live as it did on the album Dead Man's Rope – Fantastic song, fantastic version, and Sting dedicated it to Kim Turner. Whenever I say your name – No Mary J Blige, but the backing singer Joy was utterly fantastic and deserves the credit for a great performance in her own right as opposed to being…”the one who sings instead of Mary J’s part….”. This was really good live which surprised me. Sting said that Joy (Backing singer) had actually done the original vocals on the demo to send to Mary J Blige Forget About The Future – To me this is the weakest song on the album, played live improved it quite a bit, but just so so… This War – Great live, interesting video clips Book of my life – Lovely song, Dominic and the percussionist sat together at the front of the stage and played together…, no sitar player, but it worked well all the same. Mad About you – Reworked version, a little faster and more danceable to fit in with some of the new material Sacred Love – Also very good live. Dominic plays the guitar solo from Jeremiah Blues in this, and while I could be wrong and it could have been in another song as I was totally wiped out at the time, it was a nice touch. Fields of Gold – Funniest part about this is that when it started, you could hear the cheers from the back of the theatre, and groans from the front. The version was hilarious, Dominic messed up the solo, and sting made him do it again, and then Sting totally messed up all the words and was laughing all the way through it. When it finished, it was probably the biggest cheer of the night. Desert Rose – Cheb came out to much applause and did a nice rendition, Vinnie changed the drums a little on this, and it changed the feel of it a little. The version finished with Cheb yodeling all over the place Never coming Home / When the World solo thing – Great song, even better live and just flows really well. It isn’t as clubby live Many of you don’t seem to like this, and this baffles us… If I ever lose my faith in you – Same as always, except that Vinnie knows how to do triplets J Every Breath you take – Same as always Fragile – Same as always, not even the All this time version Notable, yet welcomed omissions included: Roxanne, Englishman and Bring on the night, If you love somebody set them free. But, please remember these shows are more album launches than actual concerts, and when the tour starts in January, I would expect to see these back in the set…. unfortunately Everyone played well, but standouts were the backing singer on the left, Vinnie because he is great and is just so much more comfortable than Manu. Dom, Kip and Jason were as they normally are. There were large video screens behind the band playing some rather interesting, although sometimes out of place videos. Fred, If this was in response to my posting I'd just like to say that I neither "hold a grudge against Sting" nor "blindly dismiss his solo efforts no matter what. " After The Police split up I was still very actively a Sting fan for years. True, I have never liked his solo work as much as The Police, but I continued buying (and enjoying) his albums for years. I know a lot of people on the list seem to cite Mercury Falling as a point when his albums began to decline - personally (and I know a lot of you on the list will disagree), I think the decline began with The Soul Cages (or maybe that horrible "All For Love" single with Bryan Adams and Rod Stewart). For me Mercury Falling (an appropriate title) was when I stopped buying his albums. I borrowed Brand New Day from my Mother-In-Law for a couple of days and never listened to it again. After hearing the comments on the list about Sacred Love - I expect I will do the same for this album. I do find it disturbing that the man who was the idol of my youth now makes essentially Easy Listening that my Mother-In-Law listens to. Actually, more disturbing is that he's not above performing with the Backstreet Boys, Puffy, and the like... If someone had told Sting in the '80s that he'd be doing this kind of crap 20 years later he would have gone ballistic. He might as well have written "Peanuts" about his future self. Ah, well... you can't please everybody. Likewise, why should his music be so swayed by someone outside of the feel of the song (which of course, only he really knows--having conceived the lyrics, sans meaning)? I am still intrigued by how people like Fred personalize things people say on this list..as for me Fred speak for yourself. I didn't say that his CD sucks for nostalgic reasons or because I don't like Sting's solo work. I said it because like the others have pointed out Sting has lost most of his mojo way back with TST. I am just always hoping that Sting will put out a good record because I respect him as an artist. At least he still has Vinnie. It seems like everyone who's negatively reviewed Sacred Love are Police nostalgics (or should I say extremists?) who hold a grudge against Sting and will blindly dismiss his solo efforts no matter what. I believe The Police regrouped a few months ago didn't they? Oh, wait, yes, I was there! And as much as it was a thrill to see them together on the same stage again, I'm glad Sting isn't resorting to a Police reunion. You want a reunion? Go see Simon & Garfunkel! The reunion I'm looking forward to is the Sting, Dominic & Vinnie reunion!
