... and I think it's a cross between Desert Rose and a headache. Unless the clip I heard was playing at double speed, it was really pretty disappointing. There was a constant thump-thump-thump in the background that I guess was the dance beat, but it was a rhythm ace, wasn't it? PLEASE tell me it was a rhythm ace! He can't be using a live drummer for this! I read the lyrics in a previous post, and I thought they were decent, a prayer for world peace as it were, but this was NOT the song I would have chosen to showcase those lyrics. It was so fast and so overdubbed with the thumping that, if I hadn't read the lyrics in that post, I would never have been able to understand them. In fact, the first time I heard the clip, I would have sworn he was singing something about Harrison Ford! One last thing: I am one of those fans who came to this music in the post-Police years, so I'm a Sting fan, (Calm down! I have all the Police albums and I love them!) and if I were managing his career, the first thing I would have him do is a whole album of torch songs, 'cause he has the perfect voice for them!! No flames, please, I just like it when he sings those mooshy songs! So I am not predisposed to like this disco bondage music, even though I would give it a try just because it's Sting. And to respond to another previous post, I hate country music too, and I wish he'd stop "experimenting" with it because it's just not him. Whew! Long post! But I had to respond. I haven't yet heard the single, either... But I will say this: Simplistic or no, I've been groovin' to the Justin Timberlake CD in my car for months now! As long as Sting's new CD puts a smile on my face and a jump in my step, then I love it already. He hasn't disappointed me in the last 20 years...

What a piece of $#!T! He hasn't got the time or inclination to re-form the Police (even for a benefit show in South Africa) but turns out crap like this? I think Kipper has turned Sting into a sissy. What happened to songs like: Soul Cages, Consider Me Gone, Demolition Man, or Love Is Stronger Than Justice I guess I should face the fact that it'll take Sting being down on his luck, financially speaking, in order for the Police to get back together. I remember him saying that he used to think that he needed to be in some kind of turmoil in order to be truly creative. He later changed his mind about that notion. Maybe he should change his mind again. I am SOOOOO disappointed with this song! I hope the rest of the album is redeeming.

Police WERE completely commercial

Hi everybody again from Giovanni in Milan, Italy. I want to point out on the commercial side of Sting track; why do you all keep on blaming Sting to be 'too commercial' as he has always been completely commercial since the days of The Police? I'm sure that this is absolutely not the best track on Sting career, but I want to remind that Zenyatta Mondatta has been written ONLY FOR COMMERCIAL PURPOSES....and it's a great album. Sure time has changed, and the magic of the Police is something different, but I can assure you that MILES has always worked on a commercial side of the Police releases, as well as Sting, Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. This commercial attitude has brought Sting to work on something many of us won't like, but it's exactly the same attitude he had with The Police. I remember very well the times some friends of mine asked me why I was listening again to the Police when Zenyatta Mondatta was released, as many of them considered the band already sold to the 'commercial world'; when Synchronicity came out, many fans told me they were Police fans until Reggatta De Blanc, and after that they considered SHIT everything the Police did...I am talking about 1981/1983.... STING HAS ALWAYS BEEN COMMERCIAL, has always done tv ads (check teh tv ad he did in Japan in 1985/1986) and tried to make money on this way too. And I can only agree.... Ciao ciao Giovanni

I agree with you. This song really sucks!!!! I mean dance music from Sting. Enough already!! We already had Desert Rose. Put out some good music Sting. His big talk about taking risks and making different music from the Police to expand himself is as old as he is.

Well, I finally got it off WinMX and I'm pleasantly surprised. It might not move people the way Desert Rose does, but it's got... *something*. That little Eastern instrumental flourish that first kicks in around 0.17 is a great hook, and I like the lyrics. Again, they aren't the most complex thing he's ever written, but there's something about them that appeals to me. And right now, at around 1.24, I'm hearing some very nice guitar which I take to be Dominic... nice vocals too, but then they almost always are. Overall, I could see this becoming one of those songs that gets embedded in everyone's brain over the summer. Regarding what peoples' definition of techno is, I just remembered having read that people in the UK use the word "dance" where Americans would use "techno", and in the UK, I believe our use of "techno" refers to a more specific sub-genre of dance. I have a feeling there's similar confusion over the term "electronica". If I've got the definitions muddled up, feel free to correct/add to this explanation, such as it is... I sympathise with those who mentioned the difficulty of analysing it objectively. Maybe it's just too new to me; after all, I'm someone who really didn't like "Fill Her Up" when I first heard it, but now I can see the cleverness of how the styles are woven together. I had the opposite experience with "We'll Be Together", in that it was one of my favourite tracks from "...NLTS" when that first came out, yet now I'm much less keen on it for some reason. But either way, I hope the "Ray Of Light" comparison proves an astute one...
