Jonny Lang. When I saw Sting in Orlando in 2000, Lang was the opening act then. He rocked, he steals the show, in my opinion. Didn't know if had been mentioned, hadn't been reading too many e-mails. Sting's book

Hi as Sting is about to publish his first book (not counting the "Message In A Bottle" children's book) here's some information from an old Record Mirror from July 14, 1979: "...all this (the Police tour) will be mapped out in Sting's daily journal, something which he has been keeping for over two years now. I make myself write 200 words every day," he said. "Sometimes I write more, sometimes it's a real effort to even string together a sentence but it's necessary for me. Why? Oh, because I want to be a writer and I believe that your brain has to be exercised in the same way the rest of your body does. I don't believe you can be a good writer without practice." ... "I want to write a novel eventually, maybe when I'm about 40. I'm not ready yet. I've tried before, but I didn't even finish them. They were the same as any other teenager's first attempts - mainly autobiographical. And I don't really think I'd experienced enough to be convincing. You've got to live life to the full before you write about it, otherwise you just sound shallow." ... "I wouldn't mind trying my hand at script writing. Or Movie making..." Dietmar

Thoughts on A&E show

The A&E show was a wonderful production and a great preview of the DVD! The performances at the Mayan Theater were really interesting and some noticeably different from the album. I was disappointed to hear the drum machine and sequenced bass, but watching the rehearsals put things in perspective. Sting's goal at the time was to explore the material and keep it raw. As we know, there are some that weren't overly pleased with the end album result. I hope Sting follows Peter Gabriel's or Pearl Jam's lead and releases some official bootlegs from this tour. I think this material will only get stronger. Some great clips of Jason Rebello in action. It was unbelievable to see him play a fiery solo during a rehearsal of "Never Coming Home" while sitting casually and not even looking at his hands! As Dominic doesn't seem to get the lead in Sting's arrangements these days, Jason shines as the strongest member of this band. As Giovanni mentioned, there is a very funny interview with Sting and Dominic explaining the process of writing "Shape Of My Heart" :) Joy Rose improvises a hilarious song about leaving and then subsequently returning to the rehearsal room. She is a vocal powerhouse and it's fascinating to see how her role is defined in the band at this stage. "Forget About The Future" has another set of lyrics! The alternate song is called "That Sinking Feeling" and the lyric pace is much faster (lyric sheets definitely needed here!). I was surprised to see Sting instruct the band on controlling the emphasis of their playing at different points in the song, especially since this track struck me as the most monotonous on the album. It's performed as a medley of sorts. I have only one very, very minor complaint and it's a selfish one. Whoever edited this film blended live footage with the rehearsal tracks (including points where they break and discuss). This makes it impossible to record the tracks to CD and have a perfect "live companion" to the album. Oh well! Unfortunately, I think might no longer be on the A&E schedules as the DVD is officially released very soon. From what I've seen, it looks well worth picking up. Perhaps especially if you didn't like the CD - it might shed some new light on the material for you. It certainly did for me and has me anticipating the developed live show even more! Brian

Tickets for tonight's NYC show

Well, isn't THIS a surprise! For those that might be interested, tickets to tonight's "fan club" show at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York are now available to the public. http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/0000372FAD00CA4A?brand=&artistid=723578&m… No need to join the fan club. No need to participate in any "auction". No hassle. You can purchase up to 4 tickets at a price of $48.50 each (plus their "convenience" charges). As the time of the show gets closer, more tickets will be released. It's a last ditch effort to create the illusion of a "hot ticket" and build anxiety in those anxious to get tickets. The Hammerstein is a big venue. As popular as he is, Sting's fan club members aren't big enough to fill it to capacity. However, since they forced so many people to join the club in order to get tickets, including the clever ploy of a "free membership with auction win", the percentages will look better. Although I'm not sure who really benefits from that--perhaps the fan club when it comes to marketing future shows? "Only Sting's fan club members got to see his last album release show", or something sneaky like that. And if you can make to the Hammerstein box office itself, you can even spare yourself the extra charges by picking them up directly. After all the hassle involved, I personally decided not to go. I'd still love to catch the proper tour when it comes around next year, but the process behind getting tickets for this particular show seemed more headache than it was worth. I'm also upset on behalf of the fans that were duped into spending more money than they really had to just to see one of their favorite artists. It's taking advantage of people, it's not right, but I realize that there really isn't anything I can do about it. Thanks for reading.
