Hi folks, as I know both Dietmar and Giovanni personally and as we all three *are* big Andy Summers fans I just wanted to add my 2 cents: I attended the same concert as Dietmar and I also have to say that Andy's playing at that particular night was really, really weak compared to other shows (and I saw him just a week earlier at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival). Andy *did* make a lot of mistakes, many more than usual. Dietmar is a longtime Police fan and was the soundmixer for the best Police coverband "Reggatta De Blanc" for quite some time. And he can play many of those Police tunes on the guitar perfectly, I can tell you. I think nobody disagrees that Andy Summers is one of the best living guitarists around, his technique is unique etc. etc. etc. But at that particular concert Andy's playing was just..."not so good". And if you look at his playing *on that night* through your "glorious Police heyday"-glasses (like Dietmar probably did) you would agree that he could have done better. On the one hand, you can judge the musical direction that Andy took -> for Police fans this is sometimes hard to follow (I know quite a lot of Police fans who don't like the current jazz thing Andy is doing). But that is everyone's taste and decision... On the other hand, you can judge his technical craftmanship as a guitar player: At that night he didn't play his high standard like he normally does, that's all. Since the list has been slow for the last few weeks, except for the Andy thing; I have been reading Wild Thing and it has made me of this question. If Sting had not joined the Police, would he still have become famous. I love most of Stings solo albums and he is very talented, but would he be as big as he is now without the Police. When the Police began, punk was in, however, much of Stings solo stuff is far from that. He doesn't really do songs today that sound like the Police (except for the drumming) If Sting did get singed as a solo artist back in the 70's, what would have his songs sounded like? There is no doubt that Stew and Andy help Sting get his sound. I read an article a few years ago where Stew said that Andy should have gotten credit for his riff in "Every Breath" but in the end it was Sting. SO, would Sting be as famous, and what would his songs have (had) sounded like without the Police. Food for thought. PS in Wild Thing Ian said that Sting was very shy, would he have beaten that without the Police?

You know, there are so many factors that play into this besides his obvious talent. If he had not been with the Police, maybe he would still be married to Frances, he may have been perfectly happy doing the nightclub thing and being a family man. Maybe Trudie has been a driving force with his solo work ... there are so many what ifs. Speaking of Trudie, I just watched Fair Game which she starred in. Bizarre little flick, but kind of fun to see something she's done besides the Grotesque with the Stingmeister. Back to the "what ifs." While he has his own distinct voice and compositional talent, would he have been "discovered"? Did the Police (and the adoration that came with it) negate that shyness and give him the thirst for more adoration? If I hadn't have been taken by the Police decades ago, would I be as avid a Sting fan if he were to come into my life as a soloist in 1979? Probably not. As a young teenager I needed the Police, not a soloist playing fairly mellow songs. If he had achieved the same amount of fame, I'm sure his fan base would be a good 15 years older on the average! Just my thoughts. I'll do anything to avoid football today! Is that sacrilegious of me being in Massachusetts and having no interest in the Superbowl besides U2 at half-time? I think I understand What you are saying. about andy making "mistakes"... and I understand much of what you say... I guess If you are a guitar player (like myself) I think you would know some of the things that go on. while you are playing.. but first let me birng you a cool note.... I check one of my old Magazines (GUITAR WORLD FEBRUARY 2000) and I say a short note on INCUBUS guitar player Mike Einzinger... and the guy did nothing but mention that his work on Incubus previous album "STELLAR" was very much like ANDY SUMMERS . in the sence that it was Full of delay and Echoes... and full of atmosphere... I MEAN THE GUITAR PLAYER OF THE HIP NEW ROCK BAND INCUBUS LOVES ANDY????.... and the Article is called POLICE ACADEMY.... So with that little cool note I demonstrate that ANDY CAN PLAY.... KNOW WAHT KIND OF MUSIC DOES HE PLAY.... He is a fusion guitar player... he incorporates JAZZ/Rock (old school rock like 50Žs rock) african beats, etc... He is not an perfect player I know... but he is just about the best line player there is... he can play a scale to fit a chord... he can be flexible enough to mix (a please do try to get my metaphore) Milk with lemon and still make it taste sweet and sour... that's Andy summers... If you wanted to see "robot-perfect" guitar players You might want to check out JOE SATRIANI or STEVE VAI or better the robot it self BUCKETHEAD (Tht buckethead is Nuts)... they are all great players and they won't miss a note they won't be out of tune... great solos... I admire them I play "summer song" or "snatch boogie" in my car and I just Hit the pedal... and I feel like I have a ferrari... but andy summers is like listening to a MORE SOULFUL KIND OF STUFF.. AND I INVITE YOU TO LISTEN TO ANDY's "A PIECE OF TIME" (a great song to demonstrate the Milk and Lemon metaphore)... to wrap this long and ridiculous email.. I have to say that Andy summers does Improv 98% of his live shows... so what you saw maybe was andy just chillin' and having a nice time and NOT WORKING :)... and besides who wants to listen to something that sounds exactly the same as the album... If andy made a mistake.. well at least you know he is playing NOT LIKE N'SYNC or BRITNEY SPEARS... ROLL PLAYBACKkkkkkk... On last note... watch The Hot Licks Viedo on Andy Summers and Then We Talk... Hi everybody: I've just received a couple of Japanese 3" CD singles into long snappacks and I must admit they're fantastic. So I'd like to know how many of this items there're. I've seen many websites looking for the information (of course Fabien's Out of Print and Tom Rose's website) and I've found at the moment the following items (although I don't have them all): -Englishman in NY. -Fragile. -They dance alone. -All this time. -Why should I cry for you? -It's probably me. -If I ever lose my faith in you. -Fields of Gold. -Nothing'bout me. -Demolition man. -When we dance. -This cowboy song. -Let your soul be your pilot. To the guy who laughed at Andy 2/3 of his concert... - that would be me What did you do the rest of the time ... Look at your watch!!! - I was thinking of leaving No seriously ... What the hell were you doing there spending your money if you knew what you were expecting! ??? - I didn't know what to expect. I wanted to see another Police member live and hoped for one or two Police songs and some nice guitar sounds. Oh yeah, and Dennis Chambers. It's a shame you misunderstanding Andy, a living legend of his time that brought so much to the guitar that we know today. - You're right. It is a shame. I wish I could like his music or his live performance. But I can't. Too bad we'll never get to hear you play. - As I never said I was BETTER than Andy Summers, this remark was not necessary. Thanks for all the discussion. Enjoy his music. I'll enjoy the Police times. And new bands. Dietmar

Sting as Roxanne, and a question or 2

...well, he's being referred to as a "media whore"... ;-) I thought the Super Bowl Bash was one of his better outings of late -- looked good, sounded good, etc. (What *was* that on his jacket?) But he was drinking something when he was talking to Deion Sanders (Now *there's* a moment of zen!) and his nose looked a little rosy, so he may have been a tad on the tipsy side. Hey, it apparently works! My question refers to the lyrics of his duet with Shawn Colvin, "Someday She/He'll Love Me": what is the last word of the song? The last line goes, "...until the moment our hearts stop beating and we are---?" Love? Lost? I definitely hear the "L" in there, and what seems to be an "ah" sound following, but I can't get the rest of the word. My other question is about the Direct TV thing; for those of us without Direct TV, is there anyone out there up for a video trade or reimbursement for tape? Let me know, and have a great Superbowl weekend! Holly
