Mine arrived today along with the deluxe edition of Adventures beyond the ultraworld. I got them from amazon.co.uk Its an 8 page digipak with two trays. The one side opens to hold a booklet. To my surprise the artwork on the front cover is the same as the original and not the spotty logo we saw a few weeks ago. The spotty logo is however used on the front of the booklet. Well, if it is indeed a remastered version, in the sense that a mastering engineer took the original mixes and reworked it with eq and compressor tools then it shouldn't sound all too different if it is done correctly. I guess the differences will lie in the very subtle regions. So that is a good thing i would think. It would be horrible if they had overdone their job and compressed the hell out of it (which is popular nowadays: to sound as hard as possible). R

Well - that's subjective. I don't believe there is anything 'correct' about a creative process. I usually interpret 're-mastering' as a process where a mastering engineer revisits the mix and draws out its subtleties (like Ramon mentioned) and cleans out the cluttered areas. The use of compression may have the engineers mark on it. I usually *expect* a better aural experience from a re-master. That's its purpose, isn't it (unless the previous master was badly done)? Maybe the credits will show who mastered this version. I would think they'd be waving a flag saying who did it. On 10/5/07, Ramon Vink <ramonvink@hotmail.com> wrote:

Thank you Ramon and ML for the info. I must admit that the problem lies within my ignorance of what mastering is. I was expecting to hear BIG changes. Not so much to be classed as a remix with different notes/samples and stuff but enough for me to able to say "thats different". I will give it another blast tonight and might compare this new one to the old to try and hear the differences. Can re-mastering alter the panning or stereo at all? or is it just tweaking bits here and there to kind of highlight some sounds/dampen down others? Cheers, kl --- M L <bytesizenun@gmail.com> wrote:

Normally the remaster stage makes use of the allready mixed tracks, so it comes down to a L and R (2) track. They can indeed alter stereo effects by phase alterations, but individual samples cannot be panned differently, as that is covered during the mixdown stage (that is before mastering offcourse). That's why mastering does not miracoulusly change the sounds of a CD UNLESS they change a *lot* with eq etc..... I am not a professional but this is what i know about that stuff/music.. R

Could it mean re-'glass'mastered where the original recording has no difference whatsoever?
As far as I can tell, this release sounds EXACTLY the same as the original. :(
wikipedia does not fill me with hope either: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remaster
It would seem that I paid good money for something I already own but with different packaging.

Its an 8 page digipak with two trays. The one side opens to hold a booklet.
To my surprise the artwork on the front cover is the same as the original and not the spotty logo we saw a few weeks ago. The spotty logo is however used on the front of the booklet.
Not had chance to listen yet.

Yeah, a 5.1 mix is what they should have done, oh well. On 10/5/07, Chris Wallace <interax@hotmail.com> wrote:

Normally the remaster stage makes use of the allready mixed tracks, so it comes down to a L and R (2) track. They can indeed alter stereo effects by phase alterations, but individual samples cannot be panned differently, as that is covered during the mixdown stage (that is before mastering offcourse). That's why mastering does not miracoulusly change the sounds of a CD UNLESS they change a *lot* with eq etc..... I am not a professional but this is what i know about that stuff/music..

Cheers,
kl

Well - that's subjective. I don't believe there is anything 'correct' about a creative process. I usually interpret 're-mastering' as a process where a mastering engineer revisits the mix and draws out its subtleties (like Ramon mentioned) and cleans out the cluttered areas. The use of compression may have the engineers mark on it. I usually *expect* a better aural experience from a re-master. That's its purpose, isn't it (unless the previous master was badly done)?
Maybe the credits will show who mastered this version. I would think they'd be waving a flag saying who did it.

engineer took the original mixes and reworked it with eq and compressor tools then it shouldn't sound all too different if it is done correctly. I guess the differences will lie in the very subtle regions. So that is a good thing i would think. It would be horrible if they had overdone their job and compressed the hell out of it (which is popular nowadays: to sound as hard as possible).

But again - what you are describing occurs during the tracking and mixdown phase. The purpose of the mastering stage is to strictly fine tune that final mix (stereo or otherwise) and create a master disc that is compliant, clean sounding, and doesn't blow the s**t out of your speakers when you blast it at home. Some remasters are drastically different; others are very subtle. I found Ultraworld to be a rather pleasant remaster actually! I actually prefer it over my original UK copy. Looking forward to hearing U.F.Orb and am hoping for the same. On 10/5/07, Jason <jasonihicks@gmail.com> wrote:
