Heh, 65 downloads until now ;-) Finally I was able to listen to it. Very Fehlmann-ish. Can't say if I like it or not - it's not something big, but also not too bad...

First of all thanks marcolphus for the link, much appreciated. With regards to the track, i'll take the contrary view to Andrew and plant my flag firmly in the 'impressed' camp. It's a fucking lovely track. I may be biased because I'm a fan of the Fehlmann sound, although I don't think this sounds particularly 'Fehlmanny'. But I'm willing to bet a lot of list members would prefer to hear this kind of tune coming from The Orb than something of the likes of 'Vuja De'. As an aside, my first thought upon hearing OOPA was: this would mix really well with 'Cluster One' by Pink Floyd. A quick test has proven the case; start Cluster One at the 4 min mark for some scratchy, diffuse ambient treats ;) Rich (also a Hughes fan!) 2009/2/13 Gel-Sol <gelsol@yahoo.com>

I dunno, I was pretty much over that German-Minimalist-Kompakt-Fehlmann sound after Visions of Blah. Don't get me wrong, I like Fehlmann's stuff, but I favor his stuff on Good Fridge more than the new stuff. While I think there's some nice production, that minimal style is boring. And the Orb is a psychedelic band. If they are indeed going "full-circle," (Bikes n' Trikes/The Dream back to Adventures) they need to get back to making tripped-out shit like Terrarvm and Orblivion. FSOL is actually making some pretty cool shit right now. I love both of those Environment albums, just as much, if not more than their Lifeforms/Dead Cities phase. You can't fault the Orb for trying new things and going in different directions, but their strong points will always be as an abstract/psychedelic band. The Orb MUST go back to their roots. And these roots are NOT psychedelic or abstract at all, but pure fucking DUB. Nothing more, nothing less. I think they should not move into that minimalistic crap IMO. They have been doing that for a while now and it bores the crap out of me. Also The Dream is a failure to me. Maaan, no offense meant, but I'd say anyone who thinks the Orb isn't psychedelic is rather off the mark. The samples alone are, and always have been, very trip-friendly - like funny and weird/unnerving ("the flight director says get back in!") at the same time, like you know he's fucking with you a bit. Great fun. I agree on the minimal stuff - I think I've listened to Okie Dokie twice, I just really can't get into it. I DISagree (heartily) on the Dream - overproduced? WTF is THAT? JFC, man, it's one of the best-sounding CDs in my collection (we are talking Zappa remaster, Steely Dan quality here)(God, I love Steely Dan). I mean, is Terrarvm "overproduced"? I really like that the Orb doesn't stand still, and that the Dream album revisits some things like dub without doing it in a stale way (and I like how LX is working in vocals, doing almost pop tracks really (not a bad thing, love Bob Mould), but in his own way - the vox heavily processed for example, and I like what he's been doing with the Korpral (sp?) guy rapping - kinda like Shamen but not as dippy (fine, I enjoy Shamen stuff quite a bit too, while we're at it don't forget I'm also the guy that likes Rush right up there with Orb so you can feel free to write me off as a dipshit if you want). I consider BM a good example of an artist who can do basically-to-the-standard-pop-formula pop songs that are actually interesting and good as opposed to churned out drivel, with the implication being that something being "pop" isn't by definition bad, means you're a sheep for liking it, etc. LX has come under some degree of attack for doing poppier stuff, but I have no problem with this as he also does it differently and in an interesting way. I just want to say that I gave OOPA a more concentrated listen, and I kind of like it....that crackling/boiling noise that plays through most of the song is distracting though. And its a total Minimal/Kompakt cliche. It's like when producers put in intentional record scratches or some annoying high frequency. I agree. The Orb are psychedelic. How did Bob Mould pop up there? Husker Du flashback?

personally, the dream sounded more like a Dreadzone album than an Orb album to me... ...and i was never that fussed about Dreadzone in the first place. OOPA? sounds like something they had sitting on a hard-drive/DAT somewhere, that they couldn't be bothered to finished, and when someone asked for a track for a compilation - bingo. "will this do?" IMHO, YMMV, etc. cheers, --- Smiley ________________________________ From: Ramon Vink <ramonvink@hotmail.com> To: gelsol@yahoo.com; orb@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Saturday, 14 February, 2009 14:58:24 Subject: Re: [Orb] OOPA for everyone The Orb MUST go back to their roots.
