Hi everyone, I don't understand the spiteful remarks concerning RMStringer and his FTP. Did he really insult you with telling the list members that he had this or that stuff on his server, albeit a bit too frequently :))? Did he ever refuse to give the log/pass details to anyone afterwards? Did he make you visit his FTP against your will? Did he set up the FTP to steal your credit card numbers? Did he let in only the people who gave him something in return? Was it his regular job to organize files according to everyone's desire? Did anyone of you set up an FTP with high bandwidth and loads of rare Orb stuff (excuse me if you did - I cannot recall if I saw any other FTP mentioned on this list for years) for everyone to enjoy it? For me, RMStringer's FTP worked fine. Sometimes I could not log in, sometimes the speed was too slow - so what? RMStringer didn't owe me anything to meet my demands. Yes, there's soulseek for people with fat bandwidth, but for poor sods like me who live in Russian outlands with a crappy dial-up connection, his FTP was the only source of rare Orb and KLF stuff that I would have never found anywhere else. So, I would like to say a big THANK YOU to Mr. RMStringer for the job he's been doing for years, for us, for nothing. It would be a great pity if the server goes down forever. Peace to everyone. As of next week, November 1, 2005 I will be shutting down the KLF and ORB archive portions of my FTP. IT has been a good 5 years of keeping the KLF material up for the list, but it is time for me to shut it down and pass the torch to someone else. I will still have a few private accounts on my server, But on a limited basis. I am also going to shut down the torrent server as well tonight. It has been a good run, but the time has come. Since we are taking a poll... Okie Dokie - do like it and think it is worth the dough (have japanese edition on order so eager to have the real thing in hand). nowhere close to old orb (songs seem less fun and are a bit hollow at times) but still a good listen. Orbsession - like it a lot. only two complaints - 1) wish there was some detail on the history of each song - at the very least a date of the recording along with some info on the parties involved. would have loved to see some thrash stuff on there but understand there were issues that kept that from happening; 2) sail away is horrible - noot sure if it is worse than once more and magic (transit kings.) also as a side note - been listening to the japanese edition of bikes and trikes and like it more and more with each listen - much better than the us/uk release. the rmstringer post on how bad this was made me check it out again (its been awhile.) as for the ftp server - only used it for a bit at the turn of the year. nice to know there was a source for orb/klf material - so sorry to see this go away (regardless of any technical difficulties.) that said have pretty much used soulseek exclusively since i ran across the ftp and found (glitches aside) that it is also a great source for hard to find material (live sets, promos, bootlegs, out of primt material and forthcoming material.) not a fan of piracy myself (i only share stuff that falls in the aforementioned categories) but to each their own. cheers, steve __________________________________ Yahoo! my name on soulseek is smkraft. am "on" all the time but am away for about 95% of the time. have been in the the ultraworld room on and off but since i am rarely engaged while on soulseek i think it is somewhat pointless to just camp out in there. plus my ss crashes at least once per day so hate to see that there are messages sent while online that i never read or respond to becuase ss just craps out on me. the pluses far outweight the minuses. i may as well throw out a general thanks to all the list members out there who have allowed me to dl some very cool stuff (orb and otherwise) over the last year. steve ps - anyone know why the link to the archives (link on the main orb xmissions page) is down? loved reading through the archives on old topics. __________________________________ Yahoo! We're all thieves in the eyes of the record industry. We should be paying royalties to them each and every time we HEAR any part of a recording. As a matter of a fact, they would charge us royalties for singing in the goddamned shower if they could! "You were singing the chorus from 'Dancing Queen' while washing your gonads last week. That will be $.99, please." They would charge you directly every time you turn on the radio (you're stealing because you didn't PAY!!!) or hear a song in the grocery store if they could. After B&T I'm not even going to bother to "illegally download" anything new from the "Orb" until I hear directly from the mouths of you guys that whatever it is is worth spending money on. There is so much out there by other, smaller artists that is so far superior to B&T that if I'm going to give a percent to an artist, I'd rather it be them. I'll buy a new Amon Tobin (or any NinjaTune artist for that matter) because I'm pretty sure I'll like most if not all of it, but I'm not even going to waste my bandwidth on downloading a new "Orb" album unless it gets rave reviews. Why be dissappointed? I know I will be. If I do download a new "Orb" album and like it (hey, I liked everything up through Cydonia so I'm really not all that picky) then I'll go buy it. If I don't like it I'll delete it after a few goes. I guess in the case of a new "Orb" release the industry really doesn't want us to download it for free since it's going to suck and we won't buy it. Good albums that are downloaded sell more copies than normal. But the Industry doesn't want to be bothered with quality, they just want quantity. I'm going to use quotes around the name "Orb" until they put out something good. Until then I consider them to be imposters.
