Does anyone on the west coast of the USA have an M23 they would be willing to let me come see? I am interested in purchasing one, but have never seen one in person... I want to look at the design in person before I spend too much time searching for such a rare boat. My M15 is getting a little small for my family, although we're still having a ton of fun and adventures on it. Sincerely, Tyler '81 M15 #157
There are only about 20 ever made. There is one for sale in Phoenix but it’s rough. It’s at Lake pleasant. Google it or look on the owners site. It’s listed there. Been for sale for years.

There's one near Coos Bay here on the Oregon coast, the owner is Mark Dvorscak who's still on this list I think...you out there Mark? I've been out on it once with him some years ago. It's in Bristol shape, would be a great example for you to see how fine a boat it is when well cared for. Feels pretty spacious inside for a 23-footer. cheers, John On 7/5/22 12:40, sailhavasu via montgomery_boats wrote:

The problem with the 23’s isn’t really locating one ….. it’s locating one for sale! :-). Sailed with Mark and Roberta multiple times. Huge Monty fans, great sailors, and wonderful people. The 23 is a a great boat for what it is. It’s a Montgomery 17 stretched to give more cabin room , however , the beam was not stretched proportionally so as it keep it legal to trailer without wide load permits. It’s a good sailor , however it’s a little more tender than a 17. The 17 is hands down the best sailing boat in the Monty fleet. It’s cockpit size and beam are nearly identical to the much longer 23. Nevertheless , if you want to sail with company or a family , the 23 does it well. I spent many years sailing mine and loved every minute of of. (Excepting rigging up and de-rigging). The rig is heavy so be ready! :-)

Yeah, the M23 is 8 ft. beam and M17 is 7.3. Though if you look at assorted vaguely similar purpose 22-24 ft. boats of the era, most are 8 ft. beam or less also, and some at least with lower ballast/displacement ratio. Just to say, it didn't seem that tender to me. But we were out in mild conditions - Mark was excited that the wind was light enough to use his Genoa...rare enough on the Oregon coast in summer! cheers, John On 7/5/22 13:35, sailhavasu via montgomery_boats wrote:

Not saying she’s a bad sailing boat in any way shape or form. I’ve sailed her triple reefed in 30 knots. Just saying the 17 handles a bit better. I’ve owned 4 17’s and I had my 23 for well over a decade. Loved the 23. I actually re-ballasted mine and added a couple hundred lbs. she paid for it in light air , but it helped a lot in a good blow. I’m not a fan of ghosting along so I was totally fine with that. They’re a great boat (the 23). You’ll love it. :-)

Hi all, sal here. I don't post a lot, but I read a lot. Gail and I are finally finishing up our M23. (Green hull) It's been a long road but we're making progress. Ron Moore is finishing the boat for us. He built our Moore 24 (1984) which we are still sailing. He is a world class boat builder. There was a lot of work to be done. We have no images on how the centerboard winch was set up and any assistance that we can get would be appreciated. We're planning to bring the boat back to Colorado in early August. It's been a long time and we are looking forward to sailing her. Thanx in advance. salngail glesser Ex M15 owner ('86 "Justus")Sage 17 "Air Born"Sage 15 M23
Hi Sal- i've talked to Ron about this boat but really can't help him because he doesn't know anything about the board; whether it's glass, iron, or what. All he knows is that it's stuck in the trunk and won't move. I know that Eeg didn't use a regular cast iron 23 board because the pattern went bye-bye when Globe Iron Foundry went out of business in the early 80's. He may have used an M-15 board which would be totally inadequate. Many years ago, before Eeg started to make the boat, I made a foundry pattern for him for a bronze board but I can't see Egg putting that kind of money in the boat. Apparently there is no mechanism for lifting the CB, but I'm sure Ron is smart enough to come up with something. I really can't help because so far he can't give me any information. He just recently called me and left a message but so far I can't get back to him. I'll keep trying, and also talk to Stan to see if he might have some helpful info. I know that Stan went by and looked at the boat a while back and he's smarter than he looks. ________________________________ From: sal glesser via montgomery_boats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 13, 2022 11:29 AM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com>; montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Cc: mooresailboats@gmail.com <mooresailboats@gmail.com>; salglesser@aol.com <salglesser@aol.com> Subject: M_Boats: Re: ned some advice on the centeroard for an M23? I’ve been talking to Stan many times and sent him a bunch of photos. In the past and today as well. Talked maybe 5 times to Stan. The board is glass and the same big size. Stanley has photos. We don’t use a winch we use a 3 part rope to a cable to the board. 1/2 inch pin. Was Ron sober I wonder..? …..hahaha. The board is trapped inside the trunk and the entire boat sits on a padded runner on the trailer so it won’t budge. Lift the bote and it will descend. I may send photos to everyone concerned. Originally it has a standard winch in the stbd lazerette on a stainless wire that went forward, jogged to port and then forward again before curving down to the board. I never liked having to go into that locker while underway and it also took up a lot of space. I finally found a winch similar to the one Bones had on Dhana and set it up like his (right photo) I love it! Rob, the keel (CB) winch of of an S2 6.7 would I believe work for your application. Not a high volume produced boat but some are out there, if you find one being parted out, please give me heads up as I am searching out some toerail from same boat. Hi Tyler. I can't do more than show you the boats from the outside (on trailer and at dock). Not sure if the boat that is dri-sailed is even around as the owners may be out cruising. The 23 at Port Ludlow is in her mooring (when I passed by about 7am); her owner isn't local so don't know if he is around (haven't seen him in almost a month) . :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: Baba 30 #233 DEJA VU :: former owner SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com On Fri, Jul 22, 2022, 11:14 AM <casioqv@usermail.com> wrote:

Hi Mark and others, What is your feeling for the room in the cabin on an M23 for two tall adults (5'10 and 6'1), a 50lb dog, and a 5 year old? At 6'1 I have a lot of problems sleeping in the bunks on most older sailboat designs, but the M15 fits me great... however full sitting height would be pretty awesome. I will be doing a road trip up the pacific coast from California to the San Juans next month, so I could probably stop by one or more M23s, I will contact everyone that messaged me once my plans firm up. Hi Tyler, I have a family of four that all sleep on an M23. My wife and I are both 5’10 and we have to tilt our heads a little sideways when standing in the cabin. The galley is just below the sliding hatch and I can standup and “cook” there. I have two kids. One is 4 and the other 7. My M23 came with some foldout boards that fit perfectly between the benches on either side of the boat. The benches were built with strong ridges to hold the boards. They include cushions as well! You sleep sideways on the boards and since the M23 has an 8’ beam, there is plenty of leg room. We usually have the kids in the V birth and my wife and I sleep on the boards. The downside to the boards is that they take up a lot of space. My wife and I have also slept in the V-birth and have plenty of room. The interior of my boat is unique in that the head is under the v-birth and not off to the side. This makes the V-birth larger and more spacious. The downside is lack of privacy in the night for the skipper (my wife). We usually have to pull the porta potti out and set it on deck in the cockpit. The benches on the M23 are large. There is smaller bench (or the cabin sole) for your dog. The longer bench could sleep a tall person. The v-birth could fit the other 2. It’s a great boat. Be aware that the interiors are not all the same. Setting up the boat from being on the road, to ready to launch, is a 3 hour affair. Not a day sailor. Launching and recovery are always tedious affairs. If you can get a slip, I recommend it. My family has spent 7 days on the boat sailing up Lake Chelan in Washington. No restaurants or services for several days. The ice box has kept our food cold for several days until we can get more ice. When you get that many people on board with clothes and food and shoes and…and…. you still have to move stuff around constantly to get what you need, but you can’t beat it. The M23 is the biggest boat that you can actually trailer. Anything bigger would be too much in my opinion. Hope that helps, Gerry M23 Dhana Get Outlook for iOS<https://aka.ms/o0ukef> ________________________________ From: Dave Scobie <scoobscobie@gmail.com> Sent: Thursday, July 7, 2022 12:52:54 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: M_Boats: Re: Anyone on the west coast have an M23?
