Hello, my folks just bought a Montgomery 17 but have put me in charge of her since they don't know how to sail. We'll sail the Little Duck on a small lake in northern MN. The Little Duck is hull 266 and eventually we're going to fix the electrical, water and head systems so we'll be using this site frequently. My first question? with winter coming on can the boat be stored on the trailer with mast and rigging still up? What are the possible problems of doing this? We do plan on covering her. I appreciate your responses. Thanks. Scott Golden. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Faith Hill - Exclusive Performances, Videos, & more faith.yahoo.com
Hello Scott, Welcome aboard. I'm sure you will greatly enjoy your "new" Montgomery. I'll leave it to northern 17 owners to respond regarding winterization. Here in VA we have opportunities to sail year round. Stan Winarski M-15, #177, Carol II
Welcome Scott, I've never heard of anybody storing their M17 that way. It would certainly be much easier to cover the boat with the mast down. Lowering and then raising the mast again in the spring for launching would be less work than attempting to cover her with the mast standing, in my opinion. With the mast down and a tarp draped over it you have a nice "tent" that will hold it's shape all winter allowing rain and snow to slide off with large openings on the ends to allow air to circulate. I would also have some concern about the amount of ice that might form, although it would probably never be enough to cause any danger except for the possibility of large chunks falling on occasion. If others in your area commonly store their boats with the mast up I would check to see how they solve any difficulties that might arise. Good luck to you and welcome to the list. Hi Scott. Congratulations to you and your family on finding a truly terrific sailboat. If you decide to lower the mast and put a tarp over the mast and boat for the winter, be sure to block-up/support the middle of the mast so that any major snow or ice load does not permanently bend the mast. ----- Original Message ----- From: scott golden To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Sent: Saturday, October 05, 2002 9:49 AM Subject: M_Boats: new owner Hello, my folks just bought a Montgomery 17 but have put me in charge of her since they don't know how to sail.
