Re: M_Boats: Tiller extension
I replaced the tiller on my M17 when the original cracked. From West Marine I purchased a Catalina 22 tiller, and modified it. I routed out the butt area so the cheek plates would fit correctly. It extends forward as far as possible on the M17 and just clears the main sheet. It does help better balance the boat, but it also has a large handle area. It also provides a better attachment point for the auto - tiller. John
I built a new tiller out of single piece of white oak, using the old cracked tiller as a pattern. Made a few slight modifications.....a little bigger and a bit longer, and changed the angle of the dangle. I also put a slight taper from the rudder end all the way forward, with only a slight knob on the end to hold a turk¹s head knot from sliding off. Building it was not hard...but I used my father¹s wood shop to do it. Primarily the band saw. It took maybe an hour or two to go from a stick of wood off the pile to finished product ready to sand. The hard part was the 7 coats of varnish! I seem to recall reading in a Larry Pardee book that a tiller does not have to be laminated. They only do that to get the complex curves in it, and for looks. A one piece tiller out of stout wood is just as good if not better. Larry wanted one he could jump on without breaking it, and mine has passed that test. Howard M17, #278
An idea: If you need a quick reserve or temporary tiller, go to a mega- or any hardware store and buy a wheelbarrow handle. It's usually oak and has the right basic shape, probably needs some trimming at the butt (but who doesn't). I thought about getting one as a spare. Big. Thick. Husky. Heavy. A MANLY tiller. Manly, yes--but women like it, too. Doug ------------------------------------------ Doug King M-17 #404 "Vixen" Montgomery Sailboats Owners Group Web site: http://msog.org Email: mailto:msog@msog.org
Would love to see a pic of your tiller, Howard, with the turk's head knot. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Howard Audsley" <haudsley@tranquility.net> To: <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 20, 2002 9:25 PM Subject: Tiller extension I built a new tiller out of single piece of white oak, using the old cracked tiller as a pattern. I'll get one. I'm also looking for the old tiller to do a side by side photo, but can't find it. I may have put it back in the boat as a spare. Not sure why, since it was cracked. Probably stored with all the other spare stuff I hope I never have to use. Our sailing club held a "race" earlier this summer. It was from Point A to Point B and was not timed. To have chance to win only required that you eventually made it there. The race involved an inventory of the boat. The more stuff you had, the better your chances, i.e., one anchor = 1 point, 2 anchors = 3 points, 3 anchors = 10 points, etc. My ranking was pretty high. Had it been handicapped by points per foot of boat, I would have won going away! Howard On 8/20/02 8:46 PM, "Honshells" <chonshell@ia4u.net> wrote:
