I finally tired of oiling my external teak. It had to be done frequently and I really didn't think it was protecting the wood. I cleaned all the oil and crud off the teak and decided to varnish it. I decided to use Le Tonkinois varnish because of the claimed ease of use. It was easy to apply and looks good. It does not change the color of the wood. I guess now the test is its durability. Does anyone else have experience with Le Tonkinois? Tom M17 Obsessus
Tom, I varnished my boarding platform, but used a regular spar varnish, nothing exotic. Two years hence it has started to flake off. Did you use any sort of preparation prior to varnishing to reduce the residual oil, or does Le Tonkinois require any preparation before application? I did'nt do any special preperation. I just used some teak cleaner and did some sanding to freshen the surface. Le Tonkinois is a combination of teak oil and linseed oil that is heated so that a varnish is produced. It may be more tolerant to residual oil than other varnishes. I guess time will tell. I just made the cut. I now have a hole in the cockpit face of my transom, awaiting a new 8" Beckson inspection port. Should I use silicon or caulk to mount this type of access opening? Early posts regarding how to deal with deck stains mentioned oven-cleaner: How long should one wait after applying the oven-cleaner before removing it? If left too long, will it harm the gel-coat?
I can't speak to Le Tonkinois, but I share your frustration/disappointment with teak oil. I used a UV-resistant Interlux varnish in 2001 and I'm ready for a touch-up, but I only applied two coats. I don't want to pull out the sandpaper and brushes again, but given that I didn't apply the number of coats I should have in the first place, the Interlux has probably performed exceptionally well. ----- Original Message ----- From: Thomas Wilkinson To: montgomery_boats@lists.xmission.com Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2003 12:26 AM Subject: Varnish I finally tired of oiling my external teak. Sikkens Cetol marine goes on easily and lasts very well. It's the only thing I'll use. $30/quart and worth it. --Gary Hyde M15 #235 'Vanilla' On Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at 08:06 PM, Honshells wrote:
