I always use duct tape for that job, and Bob Campbell likes to put it over my mouth to keep me from blaspheming after I drink too much beer. Works good to keep halyards from slapping, too. Oh yeh, and it works fine for taping my glasses on so I don't loose them when I fall in the water! Rather than using a sail stopper (which, as Thomas Howe pointed out) is often keen on jumping overboard, I drilled a hole through the two sides of the groove and put a pin through it. The pin is captive on a short piece of line.
