I always use duct tape for that job, and Bob Campbell likes to put it over my mouth to keep me from blaspheming after I drink too much beer.  Works good to keep halyards from slapping, too.  Oh yeh, and it works fine for taping my glasses on so I don't loose them when I fall in the water!

I think it was Connie or some other practical person who told us he/she just wrapped a bungee around the mast to act as a sail stop.
