Normally, motoring in glass , and I do mean GLASS conditions....is really a drag. Not this day. This day, the glass conditions made something possible that I have never experienced before. Mounting a Solar Charger on an M-17

Have any of you M-17 owners out there permanently mounted a solar battery charger on your boat. If so, where did you mount it and how did you secure it? I have a Sunsei Model SE-400 that I put on the cabin top between the mast and the handrail while at the buoy, but I'm leery of leaving it there when underway for fear of someone stepping on it. Yamaha 4hp or Mercury 3.5hp on M17

Hi, I have a new M17 on order and I’m now shopping for a motor. I was planning to go with the Yamaha 4hp, but if I go with the Mercury 3.5 it would only weigh 40lbs vs. 60lbs, which I like. My biggest concern I guess with either of these is their ability to motor into a strong head wind. Does any have experience motoring in stong wind with these or like size motors on an M17?

Larry, will I be spotting old 189 out on Folsom Lake this year? Hope so.... Already got Bruce King from Fair Oaks to come out and sail with his M15 last summer... A fleet of three M15s in our backyard reservoir would be very cool. Better still, Karsten, if you're lurking out there...your boat would make four! Goshawk would bring it up to 5... Hmmmm maybe we can have our own "Wrinkle Boat Ran Tan" (sorry GO your gig would always still the "original" :-) OMG now all we need is alot more water in the lake... -Neil

David, Glad to hear of yet another Montgomery owner in the greater Sacramento area. I sail an M15 that I keep in the garage and my "home port" is Folsom Lake. Fall is a great time to sail there as there are much fewer water skiers and fast powerboats, leaving the lake mostly to sailors and fisherman. And the winds are more likely to be favorable vs. the middle of summer which can be "bob and bake". I generally put in at Browns Ravine, and during low water season, from the Hobie Ramp which stays open longer into the season. I agree with Jerry that Lake Natoma would be a good choice as would Lake Washington. I don't believe there is a ramp at the CSUS Aquatic Center, but just across the cove from there is one inside the State Park entrance (so you still access it from Hazel Avenue off highway 50. To the best of my knowledge, no motors are allowed on Lake Natoma--well at least not gas. If you have a trolling motor maybe. Another couple of places you might consider, if you are willing to drive to the Bay Area, are Richmond Inner Harbor, and Oakland Estuary (launch from Alameda Grand Street public ramp). At both venues you are likely to find some decent wind and plenty of sailing area in protected waters. A smaller lake in Napa Valley, Lake Hennessey, was the site for a Potter Yachter outing this summer. I didn't go but I heard that those that did had a great time. As far as I know, no power allowed and boats only up to 14-15' so a nice mellow lake for a 10' boat. Just check the forecast for wind. It was pretty flat (and hot) the day the Potters went. One of my local lake favorites is Scotts Flat Lake, up above Nevada City. It is a very nice sailing lake with a good ramp, campgrounds, and it is encircled in pine trees. Yet another venue, albeit seasonal, is Woodward Reservoir near Escalon. The Potter Yachters have an annual weekend sailing and campout there and it is a blast. The lake is pretty much drained out by late summer but in season it is an absolute kick to sail there...always great wind (sometimes too much when trying to pitch a tent). I have been trying (seemingly in vain) to somewhat organize the Mboat sailors in the Sac area and it has been like herding cats (no pun since we all have monohulls) but I will keep your email on my list of locals in case you want to be notified when any of us are headed out somewhere for a day sail. The subject of anchoring has been covered pretty well, but I would like to add one comment. Retrieval from the stern is fine when things are quiet and calm, but if things start to get dicey in your anchorage, trying to pull in your anchor from the cockpit while your boat is laying broadside or quartering stern-to in the wind and waves is not good. Likewise, trying to haul it in from a bouncing foredeck, hunched over with an aching back and trying to hold on while pulling up the rode while your motor is cavitating is not too good either. I've come up with a technique that has worked well in these conditions. So well, in fact, that I use it all the time. On CornDog, my M17, the anchor lives in a large tupperware type tub in the port cockpit locker. The anchor is deployed over the side while traveling forward, cleated off on the stern, and then walked forward and cleated to the bow. The tub and extra rode stays in the locker, with the tail of the rode running from the bow cleat back along the toe rail, over the coaming, and under a corner of the locker lid. To raise the anchor, I take a wrap around the port winch with the tail of the rode and cleat it off. Then I go forward, uncleat the rode from the bow cleat and put it in a snatch block hung from the bow pulpit. The boat is now still anchored facing forward into the waves, but the line can be handled from the cockpit. Pulling it up is simply a matter of pulling on the rode coming from the winch and letting it tail naturally into the tub in the open locker right below. The boat stays straight and in control, you're hoisting from a position better for your back, and you're handy to the motor controls. If your anchor is hung up, you're already on the winch and can crank with a winch handle if needed. Obviously, you can only raise the anchor until your chain gets to the snatch block. For this reason, I only use 10 feet of chain. By the time the chain gets to the snatch block the anchor is off the bottom. If things are calm I'll walk forward, release it from the snatch block, let it swing back to the cockpit, and finish the retrieve. If things are still dicey or crowded, I'll let the anchor and chain dangle from the bow and motor out to where there is more room and depth to release it from the bow. To compensate for the shorter chain, if I'm worried about my anchor holding, I'll slide and 10 lb. mushroom anchor down the rode on a carabiner. Works the same as extra chain to keep the pull horizontal on the anchor itself. Larry Yake M17 CornDog "In a powerboat you get there sooner, in a sailboat you're already there."

Has been a relatively quiet list lately. Hope everyone is getting lots of stick time out on the water. Can any list members comment on the "rowability" of the Montgomery 6-8?
