Bronze portlights on a 17

Tom, I have hull 626, and also have the bronze port lights. I like the classic green from light corrosion, but I’m sure there are numerous products that will restore the original bronze color with ample elbow grease. For the glass, I imagine Windex would suffice. Incidentally, I love the look and functionality of opening ports, and would not have purchased the boat without them. Tom

Rick, - I stand just behind the mast and rotate to one side as it comes to waist height and set it into the mast carrier in extended position. I am holding the mast at waist level when it is set into carrier - I am 5'-10"- chubby and weak. OR - I have stood in the companionway and lowered from there - but it is a reach to lean forward to initiate the mast pivoting aft and you do not have good leverage on the spar until it is down quite far - lowering on top of the house is fast and I feel like I have good+ control - (I do not remove shrouds - have toggles on all of them at lower terminus) I think it works for me because the mast carrier is very high when extended and it is not a large arc to move the mast thru until it is supported. I CAN see this changing when 'my mind makes a promise that my body can't fill'. I have used block&tackle - 4:1 is ALOT of line to pay out/slow (friction) 3:1 may work ?? Good luck Have Fun! Rick, I have tried many ways and set-up a number of rigs for customers - but in the case of a M-17 - I found the best/easiest/safest way to go for me is an adjustable transom mounted mast carrier. The support can be extended to a level you are comfortable with when lowering the mast while standing on the top of the house and lowering it by easing it down to the mast carrier support in the extended position. Relying on additional side stays and support becomes time consuming and sometimes fails when you need it most! If you can supprt the mast by easing it back to a TALL support at the transom while standing in the area on top of the cabin house - there is little room for 'disaster' IF "WE" are strong enuf and up to the task (I am sliding down the age ladder myself and strength is waning a bit). I use a mast carrier that adjusts from 2'-10" above the upper gudgeon to 4'-8" in the extended position - two pieces of 3/16 line tied from top of mast support to mooring cleats each side when extended to support the upper end of support when extended. I 'guide' the mast down to the roller mounted on top of the support while standing on top of the cabin house. The weight of the rig is not too much at this stage - the headsail halyard could be used to assist the lowering - attach it to the forestay chainplate and ease as you lower the mast. If you would like I can send photos of the mast support - nothing special, can be built at home maybe a bit of welding helps. Never have had good luck with gin poles - a-frames and cranes- they seem to add complexity to my already short time for sailing - BUT if you need 'em - build the best you can afford/design/construct! I have a wonderful 1981 M-15 down at my sailing club that I have had for about a year. Recently, a 1982 M-17 came up for sale, $2500. She's in ok but not great shape. No major problems that I can find. Centerboard has been dropped, sanded and epoxied. Boat is dirty and has some cushions but they really don't fit. She comes with a ok trailer, new lights and bearings. Boat has electric system missing. 4 hp 2-stroke johnson. Am I a idiot for buying her? I just want to find out if it suits me better that my 15. Aluminum AND fiberglass can be recycled - hard to find anyone to recycle FG though. The owner of a 'large sailboat manufacturing company' once told me in response to similar comment - '...once they are built/bought/paid for - it doesn't really matter to me if they end up in a dumpster - they are objects not people' different strokes for diff folks.
