Great book to read on a winter evening

If we can't go sailing in this arctic weather at least a good sailing yarn read in front of a nice fire in a fireplace would make up partially for the lack of the real thing. As a boy of about 8 my doctor presented me with a copy of "OUT OF GLOUCESTER" by James Connolly. He knew that I built and sailed model boats, so thought that I would enjoy this book. I still have the original copy, and reread it every few years again and again. It's a real "keeper" for a sailor. It has a series of stores about the Grand Banks fishermen and their schooners sailing out of Gloucester, and when there holds were full of cod or mackerel would then race each other to T Wharf in Boston, with the first schooner to arrive getting the best prices for their catch. Reading these stories is what made a lifelong sailor out of me. The description of the races among the schooners; run-ins with Canadian Authorities who confiscated their boats for fishing in Canadian waters, and how they escaped, will have you sitting on the edge of your chair; will they make it back to US water or will the Canadian revenue cutters catch them again? In looking at Google, I find that copies of the book can be found on AMAZON, and that you can read the stories on your computer via the text that the New York Public Library copied and made available on the Internet. Pour some rum into your hot tea, sit in front of the warm fire, and go sailing with the big boys.... It sure beats what's on the Boob Tube. Then you'll also know why my Boucher schooner, that I sailed at the Conservatory Lake in Central Park, New York was named the "LUCY FOSTER" Happy reading Connie

When the weather is too cold to work outside on the boat

Well, the "Blue Norther" finally reached down to south Texas and Rockport. Finally closed the boatyard (my garage and driveway) and decided to explore the OCH website I bought into recently. The acronym stands for "Off Center Harbor" and is a site loaded with boat building and tool care videos. Also included are films about all manner of boating such as trips, fun places to cruise as well as book reviews, all with a nautical theme. Just this morning I learned how to coil a double braid properly ('bout time after fooling around with lines on boats for 40 years) so as not to induce hockles when uncoiling the line. Learned what a hockle was too. A neat site that costs about $30 a year to use. Worth it, especially when it is too cold to go outside but you just can't get away from wanting to do something nautical. I have nothing to do with the site except as a subscriber. I recommend OCH though for the reams of information available. Stay warm, Tom B, Mont.17, #258, 77'. ps, My tip of the month is to remove the 3/8 inch bolt from the cb housing that catches the board as it is lowered and as you replace it, slip a length of nylon thread reinforced 3/8 inch id fuel line over the bolt as you slide it through the two sides of the cb slot. The rubber will act like a bumper when you lower the cast iron board onto it. It does a great job of muffling the impact as well as lessening the abrupt "clunk" of the 160# board onto the bolt.

Hi, and a Happy New Year with lots of good sailing to all. This is off our usual topic, but since it is about the operating medium for our favorite toys, I thought it might give you all a chuckle to start the New Year in proper fashion. H_2 O: Dangerous Chemical! A student at Eagle Rock Junior High won first prize at the Greater Idaho Falls Science Fair, April 26. He was attempting to show how conditioned we have become to alarmists practicing junk science and spreading fear of everything in our environment. In his project he urged people to sign a petition demanding strict control or total elimination of the chemical "dihydrogen monoxide." And for plenty of good reasons, since: 1. it can cause excessive sweating and vomiting 2. it is a major component in acid rain 3. it can cause severe burns in its gaseous state 4. accidental inhalation can kill you 5. it contributes to erosion 6. it decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes 7. it has been found in tumors of terminal cancer patients He asked 50 people if they supported a ban of the chemical. * Forty-three (43) said yes, * six (6) were undecided, * and only one (1) knew that the chemical was water.
