Main Sail Traveller

Hi All, Would someone be able to send me a picture of their main sail traveller system? The previous owner of my boat removed it so that the lower block on my main sheet is attached at fixed point in middle of the cockpit. It works fine but it would be nice to bring it back to the original design of the boat which most of you likely have. Thank you in advance for your help. Jason Leckie Kuma M17 Hull #340 1980

One person mast raising

One person mast raising. I ditched the mahogany rudder and separate mast carrier in favor of the ruddercraft version with the telescoping mast raising pole. It stays in place permanently, as does a 3 part dinghy mainsheet attached to the bow. First I unship the mast from the carrier and extend it to full length. Then I lift the mast onto the raised carrier(it has a roller). I push the mast aft and make up the pin pivot at the mast base. The 3 part tackle is made up to the jib sheet and tensioned. The jamb cleat on the tackle holds tension. Standing on the seats in the cockpit I push the mast up and haul the slack. I get another bite and haul again. By this time I'm past the center of effort and the mast raises easily. A couple of turns on the jib winch and cleat. I go forward and pin the forestay. I frequently launch first and raise later at my convenience. I feel it is safer to rig on the water instead of 8 feet up on the hard. Once when I arrived at a bridge too early for an opening. I lowered the mast and went under. After passing the bridge I raised the rig and had a great sail on San Pablo Bay. All is done singlehanded. I was using the gin pole method, but after seeing a video of a guy raising a mast on his Catalina 22 using this method I figured it couldn't be too hard to do ona 17. M17 Single handed mast step?

Been scouring YouTube for a decent example. So far have seen one very over-engineered solution, and a couple of clips from bad angles of another... Anyone have tips, plans, links or other resources for this? It can't be too bad the mast goes up/down pretty easy with one helper Cheers! --Jen

Fixed gooseneck

Dwyer has the part you need. The gooseneck mount attaches to the mast with rivets. You will also need a quarter inch quick pin. When I stow the sails I release the quick pin and lower the sail as I roll it around the boom. This keeps the sail in better shape with fewer wrinkles. I will add a flat tang and pendant line at the outer end of the boom to attach at the backstay. That will hold the boom end up while rolling the sail. I also did away with sail slugs and went back to using the bolt rope. No more problems with the mast gate. The sail comes out of the groove when I reef in one large pleat. My jiffy reef lines go thru the reef cringle and is led thru a fender washer on the back side. That way the sail is not bunched under the doubled reef line on top of the boom. After the reef is complete I come about and tidy up the pleated sail.

I changed the sliding gooseneck mount to a fixed mount. I did it primarily because the boomkicker works better if the boom is fixed. When I reef lower sail and just eye ball the reef cringle above the boom. Then I make up the jiffy reefing. I have a dinghy mainsheet attached at the mast base with a hook on the other end. I hook the reef cringle and tension in until the sail looks right.

sailing in gusty winds - what to do

Hello all, I wanted to share the following and am looking for your wisdom. A little bit of background, I am a new(er) owner of a 2007 M15 and (this summer) have been in the process of becoming more-and-more familiar with the boat's traits and capabilities. I've got maybe 10 afternoons of sailing under my belt, all on a local lake in MN. Having mastered the basics of rigging etc., I am currently practicing heaving to, reefing and arriving at the dock under sail only. This last weekend, conditions called for winds between 5-10 MPH - perfect for a day on the water. Within short time, I came to realize that the wind speeds were closer to the 10-mark, and decided this was a perfect opportunity to practice my newly-learned reefing and heaving to skills. I found a calmer area near(er) to shore, and within short time had the boat sailing again with a single reef in the main. All went well for the rest of the afternoon, until it was time to head back to the dock. This required crossing the lake (approx. 3-4 miles shore to shore). About midway through the crossing, an unexpected squall came through. Wind gusts were maybe bumping the 15MPH mark, causing the boat to heel beyond the 15-degree mark on my newly-installed heel gauge. Having read up on other posts, I recall folks talking about weather helm, and that 15-degrees was about the point where one needs to consider reducing the sail (further yet). Also recall that easing up on the main sheet is maybe not the thing to do (but so tempting). A few questions: 1. I assume the smart thing to do would have been to reduce sail prior to the wind picking up (i.e., reef early), but how does one anticipate the unexpected? 2. Whereas my earlier reefing activity took place in calm waters, I have a difficult time envisioning doing this when winds are gusty and water is choppy. Is this something I just have to practice, starting out with calm conditions, and gradually working my way up to the 'hairier' conditions? 3. Should I have dropped the head sail (115%)? 4. What will happen beyond 15-degree of heel? Will she capsize? Here too, I recall folks talking about the boat 'stiffening' up, and sailing with the rail in the water. Being new to the boat, I simply do not know where the limits are, and certainly do not want to explore those being 2 miles of shore. Your input is welcomed! Ernie

Sealing deck penetrations to prevent core rot

Worth the effort to maintain the laminate skins especially on high load fittings like jib/genoa tracks on cored decks. Keeping the skin intact and ‘backfilling’ the hole is less likely to fail and allow water intrusion. Straight ‘over drilling’ is easier, but less strong, harder to ‘center’the fasteners inside the epoxy plug without drilling a larger hole to ensure the plug completely surrounds the fastener, and is more likely (under worst case) to pull the plug as it is not encapsulated by the skins. The last thing you want is the plug to become compromised! If the hole is damaged, try to maintain the inner skin at minimum. A bit more work, but I have not had one fail yet and the core and fasteners are positively isolated. I am doing this right now- hence the note. Check ‘West System’ how to for additional info -this popped up first on google. Don’t forget to seal hole prior to plugging with ‘neat epoxy coat’, then thickened ‘pooky’. Let’s keep those holes in the deck sealed, strong and minimum size! I use ‘bent nail’, Allen wrench, and dremel bits depending on wet or dry core.
