Bow plate update

Some of you may remember the difficulty I was having last month finding an acceptable bow plate for my early hull #23 M-17. My brother ended up bailing me out by fabricating one along the lines of the original. Check it out in the photos. It is an awesome fit and captures the fiberglass flange very well. This was a big stumbling block for me and I am grateful for his contribution. -Gerry

Covering topsides resin repairs

What does anyone here use for "paint" on top of resin, when you've done some kind of small resin/filler repair topsides, and need to cover it? Mainly to protect the resin from UV, and, cover whatever color the resin/filler spots are with something at least vaguely matching your topside gelcoat or paint? For example holes filled when moving cleats, tracks, etc. or replacing them with ones that have different mounting hole locations. Jerry recently wrote: "I've done a bazillian repair jobs over the years... For nearly everything, polyurethane auto paint is far better than gel coat. It's WAY more UV resistant and therefore stays shinier longer and doesn't fade as much as re-sprayed gel and is much easier to apply." Anyone tried this for small stuff like I'm talking about? A can of polyurethane spray paint from local auto parts store? How does one reply?

I've been following this email list for a few months and have even posted a couple times, but when I "Reply All", my reply doesn't usually show up. Like Dave Scobie, I questioned using an aluminum compound over steel punchings, but again, never saw my post. What is the correct way to reply? Just "Reply"? Not really a Luddite, Les

Epoxy and fibreglass repair below waterline

I have just finished doing a epoxy and fibreglass repair below the waterline were my stop pin ripped out of the side of the keel from lowering the centreboard too swiftly last summer. I believe Dave Scobie talked about a tie coat after a repair, before bottom paint but is it necessary over an epoxy repair? One more tin of paint which I would rather not have sitting on my shelf if I don't need it.

“Heavy” weather sail changes on an M-15

Soooo, we got our butts kicked today on Puget Sound. Coming from a Flicka, I’m still learning to sail these little boats, and finding out their capabilities. I know, I’ve read all the accounts, heard all the stories, but we had two M-15s out singlehanding in steady 15 to maybe 20 knot gusts, with reefed mains and working jibs, and close hauled were on the verge of being overpowered to the point of losing control. I know all the tricks about keeping the sails flat, etc. but I tell you, I was out of my comfort zone. So my question is, how do you change out to a smaller headsail in 2’ to 3’ waves when you are overpowered? I have a downhaul and got the jib down no problem, but I wasn’t about to let go of the tiller and go forward in that, no way. Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions? Don’t tell me to start the day with a smaller jib, it was forecast for 5 to 10 and went from ghosting to overpowered in less than a minute. I did learn, despite everyone saying to the contrary, that at least MY boat sails just fine with only a reefed main and no jib. I wish I had two reefs though, it would have been much more comfortable today. M-15 sailors with experience, share your advice! I’ll pop this on the Facebook group too.
