halyard sides, masthead rig clarification

Hi all, In case anyone has any additional info on this... My M17 (1974) came with red and green halyards. However the red was on the starboard side sheaves and the green was on the port side sheaves. So yesterday I swapped them around - it wouldn't matter if they weren't colored line of course, but I found it confusing that they were opposite sides from the normal navigation colors. The real question - or comment maybe - is this: On this M17, the masthead sheaves are angled slightly from true fore-aft. One pair of sheaves lines up on the aft side with the mainsail slot - for the main halyard, obviously - and is slightly to port on the fore side of the mast. The other pair of sheaves - obviously for the jib halyard - lines up with the center of the fore of the mast, and is slightly to starboard of the sail slot on the aft side of the mast. Now I've got the green halyard coming down the starboard side - on the sheaves aligned at masthead for jib - and the red halyard coming down the port side - on the sheaves aligned at masthead for main. The handful of other sloops I've learned to rig and sail (none were masthead rigs, I realize now) all had the main halyard starboard, jib halyard to port. Some net searching indicates there's no 'standard' but that main to starboard predominates and there may be reasons why racers prefer that. OK, no problem there. The other issue that comes to mind is that when hove to, on starboard tack (for right of way reasons), the main halyard is on the lee side, somewhat less convenient to get at for putting in a reef. But it seems there's nothing to be done - the masthead is the way it is. I'd either have to cross the halyards, or, have them off-center for their respective sail heads. So, questions: Is this the normal masthead setup for an early vintage M17? Am I missing some simple obvious forehead-smacking detail that would make this different? John, When hove to on starboard tack the main halyard is on the weather or starboard side of the boat - facilitating reefing the main - the side of the boat that the boom is on dictactes port/starboard tack, OR more correctly in ALL cases - 'Definitions' - "Tack,Starboard or Port A boat is on the tack, starboard or port, corresponding to her windward side."* * 2013-2016 edition of The Racing Rules of Sailing under license from the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) - page 5 Definitions Hove to on starboard puts the boom on the port side of the boat (to leeward) - opposite the halyard when located in the 'typical' location. GO (when 'backing' - has me a bit confused - have to try and figger that one out. Slip gone!

Well, I missed on the slip somehow. Not sure what happened as they were closed over the holiday weekend. I left phone and email messages. Maybe the information on the website was not up to date. No fear however, there are many marinas, I'll keep hunting! I did find out why the price was so good, that particular slip was considered to dry out as the water level would get to 2.5 feet on a low tide. Heheh! El Nino would be floating away happy as could be! OOoh, and some serious progress with the Admiral this weekend! We pulled into Pleasant Harbor Marina and for $50 had a sweet overnight, champagne, hottubs, pool, restaurant and a waterfront view to kill for! We went out for a sail and the Admiral had a sudden interest in what things were called, and how to work things. She insisted on taking down the sails herself. To pull the boat out, there was a loooong trailer line at the ramp. The admiral suggested she stay on the boat while I wait in line and that she would be the Captain and bring it over to the trailer when it was time. 45 minutes later, here she comes! Putt Putt Putt....started the motor, motored over and parked like a pro right behind the trailer. That is a big change from, "Get me off this $#$#@!! boat! I can't do this." I could hear in my mind the power boaters going...ohhh boyyy here comes 30 minutes. One guy walks over and goes, boy, that's probably a different deal at the ramp. I said, nah, it pulls right up and out. We were out in 5. I can't tell you how many people asked about El Nino at the marina. My favorite was, "What a beautiful boat, looks like it would go anywhere." To which I replied, "They've been to Hawaii and further." "You're shitting me???" LOL One admirer says, one sec....comes back in a few with a life sling all packed up and ready to go...he says here, I have two. Very nice of him. And El Nino is definately not the prettiest Monty around, I can imagine the attention some of your boats get. Thank you to all for the nice comments on the song btw!
