Oooh, looking at the pics, mine has been "altered". The corner of the trunk is roughly cut out and the line exits there. It doesn't have the clean, neat plastic sleeve. It's just a biggish hole. Also my winch is to the right of the cleat, so the line has to go over the cleat and then down through the hole. The water doesn't drain anywhere, just sits on the sole and tries to rot the wood at the base of the v berth. So I towel it out. bottom paint redux

Dinghies

I can't believe I find myself disagreeing with Connie. I don't recall that ever happening before! We've used a cheap inflatable as the dinghy for our Montgomery 15. Although I am sure it doesn't row well at all compared to a hard shell boat, it has perfectly met our needs. The best thing is we don't have to tow it around all the time. We just pull it out, blow it up in about 2 minutes with an electric inflator, put in some good after-market oars, use it, pull the oars out, deflate it with the inflator, and stow it under the port cockpit seat. We typically don't row miles at a time but we have taken fair distances, albeit in fairly calm waters. Has always worked great, unless we get lazy and try to tow it. Head Stay

Stern pulpits

Would anyone like a set of stern pulpits off an ’85 M17? Mine came with them; I took them off because they’re constantly in the way and don’t seem to serve any purpose. If you disagree you can have them for whatever it costs to ship them to you.

I appreciate hearing from you. As you may know, Congress first established the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) with the enactment of P.L. 109-58, the Energy Policy Act of 2005. The RFS seeks to foster greater use of fuels made from plants by establishing minimum volumes of various types of renewable biofuels, including ethanol, which must be included in the national supply of fuel used for transportation. The initial RFS established by P.L. 109-58 mandated that a minimum of 4 billion gallons of renewable fuel be used in 2006, with an increase to 7.5 billion gallons by 2012. However, in 2007, Congress approved and the President signed into law P.L. 110-140, the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. This law greatly expanded the renewable biofuel mandate volumes and prolonged the increase through 2022. This expanded RFS required the annual use of 9 billion gallons of renewable biofuels in 2008, with an increase to 36 billion gallons in 2022, including at least 16 billion gallons from cellulosic biofuels, and a cap of 15 billion gallons for corn-starch ethanol. Subsequently, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which is responsible for administering the RFS, recognized that full compliance with the RFS mandate, as outlined in P.L. 110-140, poses significant challenges due to the recent fall in demand for gasoline. You should know that P.L. 110-140 permits the EPA to waive or modify the RFS mandate if certain economic conditions prevail. Accordingly, the EPA finalized a rule to decrease the target volume of renewable fuels used in gasoline and diesel fuel produced or imported in 2014, 2015, and 2016 to 16.28 billion, 16.93 billion, and 18.11 billion gallons respectively. This is compared to the respective levels of 18.15 billion, 20.5 billion, and 22.25 billion gallons, which were originally required by P.L. 110-140 for gasoline and diesel fuel produced or imported in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Additionally, in response to this situation, there have been several measures introduced in the 114th Congress that would modify the RFS. For example, Rep. Goodlatte has introduced H.R. 704, the RFS Reform Act, which would decrease the volume of renewable fuel that is required by P.L. 110-140 through 2022, and would eliminate the separate advanced biofuel volume requirements for those years. Flag Halyards on Montgomery 15

As I understand, courtesy flags are supposed to be flown below the spreader on the starboard side, but without spreaders, I wasn't sure of a good way to set this up on my Montgomery 15. Half the fun of owning a boat is solving all these little problems and coming up with clever solutions. Owning a boat changes your thinking process, and you will find that the same ideas you applied to your boat can also be applied to you regular house, and in particular, the kitchen. Another big enjoyment for me is the necessity to keep learning something new; fancy rope work; nautical history - which is the reason why Brazil speaks Portuguese and the rest of South America speaks Spanish. Spain and Portugal were at each others throats about who owns the oceans. The Pope finally got it settled with the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1467 that divided the World into the eastern half owned by Portugal, and the western part owned by Spain. The dividing line ran through what is today Brazil; ....or the art of anchoring. Build yourself a fender board. A great tool to have on board when you want to moor against a barnacle encrusted piling. You hang your fenders then hang the fender board outside the fenders. Now you can moor against a piling, and the fender board gets the scratches and dings, not your hull. Never a dull moment when you own a boat. Ciao, Connie
