Hi all, Just did a quick 'n dirty tongue weight test on my rig, bathroom scale method. Looks like about 230-240 lbs tongue weight. A bit over the alleged 200 lb max rating for my vehicle but with the overload rear springs probably not an issue (hitch itself is rated to 350 lbs.). I could stash more stuff towards the rear of the boat when towing is what I get from this. Weight of the rig as a whole will be a while, need to see where there's a scale I can put it on in the area. John, I have 180 degree opinion and experience from your position as stated - I would actually rather burn the alternator money as amusement and spend 100+/- on a quality solar panel and another 35$ on a good regulator - my battery is always at 13.4 - 13.8 V and 100% of charge until I load them with running lights at night - they VERY quickly recover to above stated values - battery is 5+ years old and panel over 15 (replacement is in garage). When I was in the boat business, (literally sold over 1000 OB motors) I had the manufacturer's reps tell me that an alternator was a waste of $ - I still sold many to folks that desired them and NOT ONE had anything positive to report regarding the alternator's ability to charge the battery at all. (a couple were wired with '0' g tinned 'Ancor' wire for low resistance - wire runs to Industry Standards) - No Bueno - No Charge! As Dave points out - few run the motor at high throttle for any period of time. They DO provide additional weight at the powerhead, additional wiring, and may even trick a person into believing they could use electric start on their motor.... At 10hp or larger it becomes somewhat viable IF you run motor at speed for long periods and diligently maintain the circuit/batteries in top condition. I would heartily recommend (free ADVICE FOLKS ! !) a quality solar panel proper regulator and well maintained and constructed circuitry as a sound simple charging system for boats of this size and beyond. New tohatsu 5 for my Monty 17

Hello All, I was reading the book that came with this new ob and it mentioned the ethanol situation with gasoline not being the greatest fuel situation for this unit. Has anybody tried "fuel stabilizer" using gas station fuel to keep down the water absorption? I live in Rockport, Tx. and fuel access is rather limited to auto use here abouts. As this string has morphed into electronics I have a question about fully charged batteries. I have ProSport 6- 12 volt, 6 amp, battery charger from West Marine on my M17 which is charging a series 27 AGM Duel Purpose Battery also from West Marine. Both units were bought new. This set up, using oversized wire between the charger and battery will not charge the battery beyond 12.9 volts with no load. Anybody have any ideas about this? Coleman fuel will ruin your outboard

Some info from a web search - coleman fuel is a mixture of cyclohexane, nonane, octane, heptane, and pentane. Though Coleman fuel has an octane rating of 50 to 55 and a flammability similar to gasoline, it has none of the additives found in modern gasoline and cannot be used as a substitute for gasoline, kerosene or diesel fuel in modern engines. Its high combustion temperature and lack of octane boosting additives like tetraethyllead will destroy engine valves, and its low octane rating would produce knocking. :: Dave Scobie

Hi Listers, Gary's charger details I find to be accurate from my experience. I have a 1985 Honda 4 stoke 10hp and a 1995 Mariner 2 stroke 8hp, both with alternators, which have been used on my M23. Neither will put much of a charge into your batteries unless they are revving at a good clip. If not in a slip with shore power, I have a Goal Zero 30 watt solar briefcase with a built-in regulator. If the sun is strong, she brings the battery right up. Positioning is critical. My opinion is to minimize your DC load and go solar. Where to sail near Pensacola, FL?

Good evening wrinkle boat lovers, Anybody been sailing in Pensacola recently? Got any suggestions on where to go, what to see, what to eat? Pensacola isn't a hard and fast destination, I was just thinking of it because it's within striking distance of Atlanta. I'm all ears for other interesting sailing destinations on the northern Gulf. Towing report - Subaru Outback and M17

Hi all, As promised a while back, a report on towing. In particular for those wondering about what a "small" car can do with an M17. Yesterday I drove from Maple Valley, WA to Ashland, OR, 450 miles, mostly on I-5, towing my recently purchased 1974 M17 "Pajarita" with my 2001 Subaru Outback wagon. Basically, it works just fine. I had to shift down for some of the steeper uphill grades on I-5 in southern Oregon. I cruised at around 60 mph on the freeway, except for a few slower uphills. Nothing I wasn't used to from owning a 71 VW van for many years a while back :-). I can definitely tell there's something wagging my tail a bit, but got used to it eventually. Just needs thoughtful driving, taking a bit more care than without the tow. So now outings to various nearby lakes or Pacific coast won't seem like much of a long tow! ;-) Specs of tow vehicle: base model Outback wagon, 2.5L engine, 165 HP rated, 5 speed manual transmission. Official tow rating is max 2000 lbs. load, max 200 lbs. tongue weight. Has overload rear springs (std. height) from RalliTek: http://www.rallitek.com/lifted-springs-kits/5634-rallitek-rear-overload-spr… Front brakes are high carbon disks and ceramic pads (in plain English, a small upgrade from original equipment). Along with electrical rig identified on etrailer.com - the car has a plug and play plug, no splicing or manual wiring required. Sometime fairly soon I will try and get the boat & trailer on a scale and see what it actually weighs. I don't know anything about Akulet, but I'm not far from you John. My M15 is at home in Roseburg while my M23 is in a slip at Winchester Bay. I'm also a former M17 owner. Also, my good friend, Ian, has an M17 in Sutherlin. Coordinating schedules of working people can be difficult but we should certainly try to hook up and sail together some time.
