M15 cabin ventilation

I'm interested in hearing from pocket cruisers about strategies for increasing ventilation in cabin. There's so little foredeck, I hate to put a hatch there. Would love to see photos of any successful projects! Cheers, a M15 #405 La Totuma

After a long search, I purchased it from a very nice fellow in CA and convinced my brother, who was in CA at the time, to pick it up and bring it to our family reunion here in Madison. I had it out on Lake Kegonsa for my first sail last week and absolutely loved it. About a week after I sent the check for this one, another M15 came up for sale locally, so there is at least one more nearby. The dream is to sail the Apostle Islands and perhaps Isle Royale eventually. I would love to go sailing together. Paul McAleavy

M15 in Madison

Yesterday as I was driving in my hometown of Madison, WI, I saw to my surprise on Seminole Parkway an M15 parked on its trailer on the side of the road. My surprise was great enough that I stopped to take a look. (For many years I thought my M17, Seaweed, was the only M-boat around.) It seems it is a boat from California, pulled by a car registered in Colorado. I was wondering if it's anyone from the list. It would be fun to go sailing with two Montys together! Andrei.

Montgomery 15 Rear End Crash Test

My son and I are on our way to the Great Slave Lake in Canada. Last week, north of Seattle towing the boat in heavy traffic on Interstate 5, we were hit from behind by a full size pickup. A Lincoln pickup of all things. The trailer had the bulk of the damage as the boat was forced forward almost into the back of the truck, probably 2 to 3 feet. The green outdoor carpet on the trailer bunks melted a little from the boat sliding over them quickly. The mast support and the "bow stop" attached to it bent forward and slightly to the left and the boat slid by to the right. As the mast support bent forward it brought the mast down with it to nick the top of the camper shell on the pickup. As the mast came down it contacted the bow pulpit and bent it left and down. The bending of the bow pulpit partially pulled the mounting bolts up into the deck. The brand new registration number decal on the left side of the boat was partially scraped off. The mast track was partially pinched closed where it hit the bow pulpit. Right after we were hit I got out to see a pretty bent-up pickup and expected to see a crushed stern of boat. The trucks hood was buckled and its grill smashed. There was a big square hole in the grill where my factory motor mount smashed through and into the radiator. The truck was a mess. A quick look at the stern of the boat showed almost no damage! There was a slight bend to the ladder I had put in a few years ago and that was all I could see. Later I found the hull / deck joint was cracked across the stern. For the trip I sealed the bases of the bow pulpit so water would be less apt to get into the deck structure but left the pulpit as is, repaired the cracked joint with epoxy, pried open the mast track, and straightened the trailer as best I could. I was amazed how well the boat faired in this rear-end crash test. Can anyone suggest where to get a new mast and bow pulpit for a Montgomery 15? I am not familiar with the deck layout of a 15 but if there is a slopeing forward cabin face like on the 17, perhaps a hatch can be installed there on an adapter base to allow for any cambers involved in the deck. Seems like that would supply a scooping effect for breezes, especially once at anchor. Tom B

Tyler, I think the easiest solution which would not involve raking your mast even further aft would be to add a set of reef points to your jib. I put a set on a jib I had once and it worked just fine and was a snap to tie in and take out because you are talking about a very small sail. Sounds interesting to be sailing around the "moth ball fleet". Just the type of fun a small boat lets you have. Tom B
