How to get at m17 center board?

Hi all, I want to do some maintenance and inspection on my m17 center board and pivot pin. Most crucial is replacing the pendant line, but would also like to refinish the centerboard itself (sand/seal) and maybe improve the pivoting area which is allowing more side to side play than I'd like. However I'm having trouble finding a Marina with a boatyard that can put my boat on blocks for me. Most Marinas here in Minneapolis are small and they apparently don't have the space for diy repairs. Fora anybody on the mailing list have ant great ideas about how I could lift the boat enough to access the centerboard? I've read that some have managed to lift right on the trailer, but that seems dicey to me. I've considered doing the work on the water, but would rather not. Using a jack or cherry plucker to raise the boat, little by little, off the trailer and onto a stand seems difficult. Any suggestions?

Help with CB winch on 17

I know this might knowledge that is common but I need a little guidance. I just bought a 1982 M-17, The centerboard has been sanded and painted and goes up and down nicely. My problem is with the pendant and winch system. The prior owner had a anchor thimble on the shackle with 3 strand about 3/8" line. The problem is that the large large spliced thimble cracked the centerboard casing when it was raised. When I got the boat, the line had made a big ball of overrun line on the winch. I had to cut it off. I have removed the thimble and am left with just the centerboard shackle. I actually used a loop of 1/4" amsteel line but it's too slippery to work well. 1. What is the preferred line for the pendant? I think I heard it is a tightly spliced 5/16" double braid. 2. How is the line wound around the winch? How many turns? The winch is at a tilt and anytime I try to winch a line up, the line overruns itself on the winch. Even trying to let the board down easy, It always seems to make a big clumk at the end of the travel. It's very hard for me to control just slipping the line off the winch, Thanks for any help. Lifting the 17 off a trailer

Dan, I did what you are thinking about. I made some adjustable legs but you can use a bunch of 8 inch concrete blocks and a couple of 8 foot 4x6 cross beams, all available at Lowes or Home Depot. My local store also has 6x6 inch beams but that seems like overkill. Anyway, I lifted first the aft keel with a cylinder jack and blocked it up, then put the jack under the nose of the cb housing and slid the second timber under the keel right in front of the cb housing where it joins the hull. By alternating jacking and blocking with 8 inch clocks with 2x4 blocks on top of them so you didn't have to jack a full 8 inches every time, you can work the boat up off the trailer. By placing wedges on the top of the cross beams you can brace the hull upright on the crossbeams. End up with some solid blocking that just catches the fore end of the cb housing. There is about 4 inches of housing forward of the cb slot for a secure insurance blocking. Be sure to keep the whole cb slot clear with your final blocking. Or you can slide the boat aft on the trailer, after blocking up the back end of the trailer frame, and once the cb clears any cross members on the trailer you can dig a hole under the trailer and drop the board into it. That way the boat stays on the bunkboards of the trailer the whole time. By digging the hole with a slope on one side you can then tip the board to that side and haul it out of the hole. Reverse the procedure to put the board back. I did this with my first M 17 back in 1983. Good luck. Tom B, M 17 #258, 77'

Unfortunate....once again

Yes, Bob did come through for me bigtime on the keel replacement. I am more than pleased with it... As for the comments that followed that.... Once again unfortunate that the undercurrents that flow like a river the last few years have to surface once more....and I am sorry my name is associated with it in any way shape or form, .....but it does tell the story...doesn't it? With every slip up like that ,real motivations are revealed. We all used to be friends here. It's why I keep the company I keep....and I don't the company I don't....and I make no apologies. Sealant

I'm rebedding the mast tabernacle in my M17 and wondered what is the best sealant to use around the electrical cable where it goes through the base of the tabernacle. I've used Boatlife before, but it doesn't seem to hold up. Would a silicone sealant work better? Thanks, Rick M17 #633 Lynne L

M-10 rig

My old canoe racing friend Tom Smith, M-17 owner in Sand Point, ID, recently picked up an M-10 that is in worthwhile condition except that it has no rig. For sale M-17 2004

I'm selling my M-17 purchased from the factory in 2004 hull#627. It comes with a pacific trailer, four brass opening ports, yamaha 4, and tan bark sails. I will provide a full list and pictures to those interested. This boat has been kept inside an airplane hangar and warm all it's life and so shows as new. It has been sailed (fresh water only) about 15 times and never in the water longer than a week. The boat is located 20 miles south of Portland Oregon.
