Hi George, I too am redoing my traveller on my M17. The cockpit setup may not be identical to your 15 but after visiting Lenny Corin and seeing his fine "Orli", M17, (written up in "Good Old Boat" mag.Mar/Apr). and discussing his traveller arrangement I decided not to run the traveler from cockpit side to cockpit side. His is that way and he said the level the traveler is now makes it a "pain in the ass" to get into the cabin as you have to step above and over it as well as the companionway sill to then step down into the cabin. I plan to elevate my stock track to just under the companionway sill and thru bolt it to a piece of teak which spans the width of the footwell in the cockpit. That way I can close up eight potential leaking holes where the track is thru bolted through the cockpit sole and give the mainsheet a better run up to the boom than with the stock setup. I plan to install a vang so having to sheet the mainsail in tightly to flatten it should not be a real problem. I am glad I visited Lenny (a real gentleman there) as I was considering running the track right across the whole cockpit. Good luck, Tom B

Tyler, There are at least two very simple 'No or Lo' hardware versions of travelers I have used on previous M-15 and my current M-17. Both versions are VERY simple and do not intrude into the cockpit at ALL - the one in use on my current boat (17) does NOT pull the boom to weather . It is my opinion the boat's keels are not efficient enough to benefit from the 'weather setting in light air'. Keel will stall at very low flow and high angles of attack (sounds violent heh?) BTW - I plan on sailing my 17 til ......... love the little thing! Little or No hardware and VERY low expense compared to some alternatives. My last boat (S2 6.7) had a Harken windward sheeting car on a full width track with continuous line control - Way overkill for our small boats - and the prices are nutz! ! There are very easy ways to achieve the desired effect with little or no hardware and great savings. Line and splices/knots are our friend! PM me if you would like a line drawing of either version. M Traveler System

Wrinkle Boat Mates One of my winter projects is to install a traveler system on my M15. I found an article by Jerry M on the MSOG for an M17 but I can not find any of the Ronstan hardware listed. While perusing the sailboat end of the internet I chanced across an interesting site dealing pretty much with M boats. Go to "M17-375.webs.com". I think that will get you there. The site contains lots of interesting how to's as well as a video or two. It was last updated on Sept.5 so it is active. I tried to leave a message but when I pushed enter I was told that my" text did not match my text", or words to that effect. Whatever that effect was supposed to be. The phrase made no sense to me. Anybody exploring this site and trying to comment, would you please let me know what that phrase meant or how, actually, to leave a message. Lots of stuff on the site is worth replying to. On another subject. I have ordered quite a bit of stainless steel deckware and fittings from "Marine Parts Depot". The prices are very good (up to 50% off local prices) and the quality seems first rate. The fittings are heavy duty and very well designed and polished. They process orders promptly. One caveat, however, their return policy leaves a lot to be desired. In other words there is no return policy despite what they say on their website. So be careful what you buy. I purchased an anchor mount for the bow of my M-17 which turned out to be too small for the anchor shank I will use. After following all their requirements for the return, I have not heard anything from them for over a month. I do hope the site moderator lets this email through as it is extremely important to be able to pool our experiences about boating equipment and situations. That is a major advantage of being able to access a website so totally involved with one particular product, ie. MSOG. It is actually a big selling point for buying a used Montgomery. Henry, You are correct in believing the interior was repaired due to wrapping the transom edge OVER the top and into the interior of the cockpit area. I also had a large number of holes in the transom to fill - both sides. You can 'get away' with wrapping the tape to the top edge just be sure to cut enough away to allow for the addition of the tape - you will be rebuilding the edge with tape -(bi-axial is your friend) and grinding it back to a suitable contour. I did not take photos of the whole process as I didn't intend to post it - someone asked and now see part of the rest of the story! I would use plywood (epoxy and hi density filler make great slurry for bonding after parts have been coated with 'neat' epoxy') Use the old skin as a base for finishing your transom skin - save the H.I.N. and keep it clearly visible! Carbon is not necessary here. Glass is proper application as there will be flex at joint. Use epoxy for the repair as polyester does not provide a good bond. Good time to fill all extra holes and over drill and back fill the ones you will retain. Good Luck Have Fun, Ask any ?'s you need and Make sure to sail 'Chiquita' while you work. Take Care Have fUn !
