This boatbuilder has been refurbishing his so solid 1991 M 17 located on Kaneohe Bay, OAHU! On fresh trailer, with choice of aux power; She is available for purchase / perhaps charter! We all know they can sail TO Here; I’m planning my bold circumnavigation of Oahu. After this, I will announce my itinerary to San Francisco...Panama...Jamaica... Ft. Lauderdale. It’s a fun tour; but last time I did, the boat was longer. (cost more through the canal too!) So if you have had enough slaloms under London Bridge, try GOOGLE Kaneohe Bay... even the MOTH fleet comes here to play! It is our finest playground, with unfortunate S&H. AlooHa! Hi Josh, I remember Craig mentioning this concept in an editorial. I think it's a good idea, but I think it will take a while to nail down a format that appeals to all. Comparisons are always difficult because much of this opinion is emotional. Which boats? Should we add the XYZ? Comparisons are best done with boats sailing together, very difficult. Really? You are also a Contributor - now get that next article out,'What if any difference is there between a Downhaul & Cunningham' - inquiring minds want to know. I question the method of report,as the number of people who have/do owned at least two, or have regularly sailed them will ,as most do, have opinions based on what they are sailing now. How about an independent person - having owned none of them, evaluate and compare/contrast the individual models? A number of periodicals have done this - sometimes NA's avail themselves to the task and have usually given fair reports -my opinion and worth what you paid. I don't think we need to see a Potter/Montgomery/Compac booster-fest. The need for comparative info as proposed has become increasingly necessary with the lack of "Stocking Dealerships" IMO - pictures on the inter netz and bulletin boards of loyal brand/model owners does not make for clear or objective decision making for purchases. Rumor has it FrankB and Company are looking at delivering new boats right to your slip using drones. I applaud the SCA's goal, but think there may be a more informative manner to achieve the results. I enjoy the periodical - good forum quality magazine - I am NOT bashing SCA here. BTW - have owned one of the mentioned craft and sailed two for substantial lengths of time - I would not respond as I am biased - we return you to the regularly scheduled programming followed by news updates. who else? Hi, Went to look at a 17 today with a eye to buying her. #24 , "Boojum" has been in the same family since she was bought new in 1974. The boat has been passed from father to daughter i(n her 70's now) and the boat is finally up for sale. They still have the original invoice. Cost new about $3900. It really interesting to look at this early boat. It doesn't seem to have cored decks. The stiffness of the deck is from glassed in tubes under the deck and around chain plates. There is no stern locker. The port cockpit locker is large and goes to the hull. The starboard cockpit locker is small, located at the stern of the cockpit and also goes to the hull. There is a marine head (totally shot) with seacock. Stern has cutout for motor. It has split backstay but no adjuster. It has 2 sets of pintles and the rudder looks much shorter that currently used (maybe owner mod. but pintles look original) The centerboard trunk looks very thin. Much thinner than my 81 15" or any other 17s I have seen, No built in water tank. VERY small "bilge" space..... full of water. The hull gelcoat is light blue. The downsides.. I have never seen a boat with more worn gel coat on the deck. There are places in the cockpit where the glass is translucent from wear. This boat was used! The owners have left her in the water with centerboard down for at least 11 years. The bottom has been painted a couple of time. A couple of years ago, we had a hurricane and she was washed up a drainage creek. and the board was pushed up in her. It hasn't been down since. All cushions gone. Still using ORIGINAL (40 years old) sails from Costa Mesa sailmaker... and amazingly they still look ok. There is a trailer but it need a total rebuild. They have a really nice Evinrude yachtwin 4hp.
