Fr. Jeff How old are your sails? I still have original sails on my 1993 M17 and even tho the boat is almost 20 years I have I only sailed her maybe 100-125 times in this period. She has been very lightly used due to a number of reasons. I decided to send my sails off to Sail Care in Ford City, Pa to get them reset and cleaned up. They came back about a month ago and I'm telling you they look brand new. Really did a great job and I have no affiliation with them other than being a satisfied customer. Fenders

OK, for fear of sounding pretty dumb, I dared not ask until now: As a new M15 owner, a boat without lifelines, how are folks hanging fenders? I can hang one vertical from my single slot teak handhold. Maybe one from the sidestay. But, those two would be quite close together. Then what?? OK, go ahead and make fun of me it you want. :) Padre Jeff

Bottom paint

My boat has ablative copper bottom paint that is over five years old, and beginning to wear off. One boatyard has suggested removing it with a pressure washer that uses very hot water rather than sanding. Does anyone have any experience with this, or comments as to whether it's a good idea or not? Any possibility of damage to the surface? Would it still have to be sanded before painting? Thanks Tom.....It's been my great pleasure to be involved with this community. I've said it so many times before....but this group of folks can change your life. It certainly has mine. :-) Montgomery's are fabulous boats. In my mind, I have sailed on NOTHING that compares. The feeling of confidence I have when sailing the 17's I've owned (or the 23) is amazing....and I have put them to the test a time or two over the years. In my mind....feeble as it is....there are not many other boat owners out there that can enjoy the piece of mind I do when sailing a Montgomery. If you allow it to....it will take you to places you can barely imagine....and if it gets crappy....she'll get you home. Not only that...but once you learn to work with her and trust her, she'll get you home with a smile on your face, while others are watching drop jawed. I honestly don't think that a lot of sailors, sailing others brands of similarly sized boats understand this. you truly have to experience it for it to set in. I find myself feeling a bit sorry for the guy who is worried that if he pushes his boat too far "She's going over" and so he's always got that in the back of his mind....wondering if he's "getting close". Once you've experienced it...it's hard to consider something else. Of course....that's all in my neophyte opinion! LOL Another great thing about the Montgomery line is that it cures 2 foot itis! I used to be all about stepping up. Then I realized....I still have some work to do to develop my skills and ability up to the ability of the boat I already own.....and I OWN it ...no payments. And I can drag it anywhere I have the gas money and desire to drag it! And suddenly....I am able to cruise anywhere I want to cruise. It just doesn't get any better. And the last thing is... there are options to include everyone. If a new one is what floats your boat, they are available...go for it. But for the individuals that are not financially able to swing that ...there are incredible deals on used ones that make "living the dream" attainable to virtually anyone. You just can't beat that. Everyone has the ability to join in and acquire a boat that will safely take you where you want to go. Amazing when you think about it. Larry and I just raced in a race where some of the boats were in the multi -millions of dollars category...yet we were there, experiencing it in our 30+ year old Monty. Pretty darn cool!! yeah....this is a cool place to hang out! :-) Sail on!!!! ;-)

If Stan "Paintboy" replies, whatever he says is gospel, but in the meantime here's what I did and it's worked well for me. My boat had several layers of old ablative paint when I bought her. It was a mess and rubbed off on everything. Not the best stuff for a trailered boat. I stripped it off using Peel Away, a paste type product that softens the old paint so you can scrape it off with a plastic scraper. No toxic dust from sanding, but still a messy time consuming process. The gelcoat underneath was stained, scratched, and ugly, so repainting was in order. Since my boat is mostly trailered, with only occasional longer periods in the water, I chose VC Performance Epoxy. It's a hard shell 2 part epoxy paint that is extremely durable and fast, containing a teflon component in the mix. It has no anti-fouling properties, however, so if the boat is in the water for over a month or so I have to scrub off the slime with a sponge pad. If I had to have anti-fouling I would use VC-17. It's fast and durable, but probably not suitable for full time salt water moorage. My suggestion to you would be to go to an expert for advice.... Our own "Paintboy", Stan Susman, is Interlux's Tech Rep and can give you definitive answers. If you post a message to "Paintboy" on the "Sailhavasu" message board he will see it and answer. He may even see it on here. Earth to Stan...Earth to Stan!!! You out there Paintboy???!! Bottom paint questions are best left to someone like Stan as you will find that most of "us" will give advice based on "what we know" or "what we've used" in the past. While that kind of advice can better than nothing, ...this is not always the case ...going to the expert will get you all your options. I think we can all agree that bottom painting in nasty, miserable, and expensive work. You want to do it once and have it last as long as possible. An error or omission in prep work, or applying incompatible products can lead to a costly disaster. Give Stan a shout. He's a Monty Sailor too! In fact, he just bought a brand new M17 from Bob and totally tricked it out with a carbon deck, free standing carbon rig, huge square top main, bulb keel, etc! Right you are Ed......We didn't make the finish in time....but then according to The Border Run's website...50% of the fleet (close to 200 boats) "bagged it" and motored. It was a little victory of our own to be the next to the smallest boat in the fleet and to have sailed the whole deal. What an adventure! And we didn't miss it by much! Like I always say...and yes, it sounds mellow-dramatic....but this boat changed my life. Thanks to that piece of fiberglass, aluminum, lead(now), and Dacron....I have been able to meet the most wonderful folks. Larry is the icing on the cake. Our friendship came about thanks to Montgomerys. There is no one I would have enjoyed making the journey with more or been more comfortable with, with respect to their abilities. Even after 25, 26, 27 hours...we were still having fun (ok ok....from 2am till 7am....I'm not sure if Larry was smiling cause I couldn't see him...that's probably a good thing! LOL) This was another time that , for me at least, I pushed pretty far outside my comfort zone with Dauntless. I always worry about my own abilities, judgements, and limited experience....but I have always found that if I can bring myself up to the level necessary....the boat is more than capable. That's a great feeling. Larry...thanks for sharing the adventure with me! :-) S
