Mark, I leave the outboard in the cutout on Corndog all the time. I did reinforce the transom first, though, to make sure there weren't any problems. Much better than having to remove it all the time and adding one more chore at the launch ramp. My motor is the 6hp Suzuki. Same as your 4hp. If you mount it as far to port as possible you should be able to clear your rudder all right. That's one of the benefits of the Suzuki, having the control arm coming out the front instead of the side like the Yamaha. M 17 Battery

When I bought my boat the battery was located next to the V birth bulkhead even with the aft end of the porta potty. Is that the stock location? More forward and on the centerline would appear more appropriate. Where's yours? Earl landers

I have an 8 HP Yamaha and leave it on the cut out transom as well. There is no significant re-enforcement. We drive northern British Columbia mountain highways and there has been no concerns nor have we had issues with the prop and rudder. Our boat is an early production 1974 M17 number 32.

Looking forward from the hatch toward the bulkhead. Under the bulkhead there was about a 1" gap down to the top of the steel punchings on the centerline of the boat. At the outer edges of the trunk, there is essentially no gap at the bulkhead. As you move aft, where the trunk protrudes from the floor there was no gap. The floor is approx.. 1/8 th inch thick and rests on the edge of each chine. Earl Landers

Martin Johnson, owner of "Sunflower" in Duluth, MN wrote an article in the MSOG website about the cavity below the cabin sole, and the keel of his '76 M-17. Seems he had CB trunk leaks that threatened further freeze-related damage. So he put inspection holes in the cabin floor next to the CB trunk, and filled the cavity with antifreeze in winter. Here's my question - Does anyone know how big the cavity is below the floor? I plan on drilling a hole and filling the cavity with two-part closed cell foam to exclude any water intrusion - even though I have no evidence of a problem at this time.
