Joe Joe, A bridle won't help keep your M17 from sailing at anchor. I've tried it. And many other things. Tried attaching the anchor line to the bow eye, tried all combinations of centerboard up and down, rudder in and out, even tried an anchor riding sail. No much help from any of those. The problem is that the bow of the boat has more windage than the stern, and it's constantly trying to veer off to one side or the other. The anchor riding sail is supposed to solve that, but with the split backstay there isn't a good way to fly it low enough and far enough back. The best system I'm used is the one Gary mentioned. Basically what you're doing is running a long bridle off one side of the boat, in effect holding the boat on one tack. It's actually a very comfortable way to ride the waves in a rough anchorage. Set yourself up at about a 45 degree angle and the boat rides the waves without pounding. You can use a block like Gary mentioned, or you can simply tie your anchor line off at the bow, pull about 15 feet of line back in and tie a 25 foot line to it with some hitches, let the rode back out, and run the 25 footer to a stern cleat. You can then adjust your angle by pulling this line in or letting it out. Works better than anything else I've tried, but it's not perfect. Once in a while the boat will still find a way to tack, and then all your rigging is under the boat and you have to paddle your boat back around to the right tack. I think I'll try combining this method with Jerry's suggestion to use more chain and see if that totally solves the problem. Larry Yake M17 CornDog

I would like to redo my M15 port lights with new Lexan and was thinking I could use the existing ones as a template for the new ones. But I can't tell for sure until I remove them if they would actually lay flat or are slightly concave. It looks like what's entailed is removing all the screws and I suppose there is some silicone caulking / adhesive sealant underneath... Anyone know, or attempted this? thanks, Neil

Dave, Thanks for the confirmation on sailing with jib alone. I also messed around with the sheet blocks (tracks on teak) to see if there was performance difference. I found putting them far forward took the twist out of the top of the jib, so she sailed closer and faster, at least with these wind conditions. (been reading the Annapolis Book of Seamanship on reading/tweaking the sail by looking at the shape and telltales,..... need a lot mare practice). I'll be interested to see if she will perform the same with less wind speed. Last week is the closest the boat has ever sailed to the wind. Hey, great website and videos! Tim, Welcome to the group. I am relatively new to the group myself (8/09). An M15 may be an option for you as well since you single-hand most of the time. I own one (an '85 model) and it is really easy to rig. You can step the approx. 35lb mast with one hand. No gin pole needed. I run a line from the shackle of my jib halyard through a block at the bow and then back to a cleat on the deck-top right by the companionway where I can reach it. As I step the mast I take up the slack, so that when the mast is upright I can let go of it and then go forward and pin the forestay. Also, no mast spreaders. No rear stay. Just the forestay and the two shrouds. Easy. Handles on the water like a sports car. Lightweight to tow. Cockpit is fine for 2 people but in my opinion that's the practical limit. No sit-up room down below makes it less desirable for multiple night cruising but for day cruising or a weekend it's great. And although smaller, the v-berth has no compression post so the sleeping area is generous for a 15' boat. About 1/2 the weight of the M17 to tow, if that's a concern. M17 would sail much stiffer no question about it. M15 ballast including cb is about 315lbs, and the skipper and crew become a more important part of the overall ballast equation. I wouldn't call an M15 "tender" but by comparison to an M17 it is more so. If you consider an M15 then since you will single hand in windier conditions have all lines run aft, get a storm jib (I hear a Potter 15 jib works well) and ideally have two sets of reef points in the main my main only has one set but that's what came with my boat :-( Another list that's a good resource is: http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/montgomery/index.cgi Good luck with your search, Neil Dorf M15 Northern California

Heoo, my name is Tim Erwin, I just joined. I live down at the Texas coast in Rockport. I recently sold my beautiful classic Alberg 30 in Dec. She became too much for me to take good care of. I'm 62 and have MS. I've done a geat deal of research and I have decided to buy a Montomery 17. We have alot of wind and water down here and for their size, they seem to be the best. I single hand most of the time. I have noticed that they are hard to find so I will just keep checking the website. I'm looking forward to hearing what the actual owners are conversing about. Running halyards to cockpit

Has anyone run their halyards aft on their M17? I'd intended to use a pair of double pulley deck organizers to make the turn aft but am finding they fit awkwardly between the hand rails and hatch slides on the cabin roof. I'm thinking I have room for only a single cheek block on each side of the cabin roof. I had hoped to run halyards and reefing lines to the cockpit. I'm now thinking maybe I'll only run the Halyards back, and put the reefing line on the boom. Any input? I also think if I do boom mounted reefing line I might use a hook on a line turning through a cheek block to a cleat on the boom. Mitch M17 656 Grace.

Mitch , Take a look at this picture - it is tight but you can get a double in the space. Lots of time a and checking the 'fair lead' to make sure you have it in the right spot.( _www.MSOG.org_ (http://www.MSOG.org) - M-17 - LB/GF - middle left photo OR see attached if the list will take them.) I have since stacked an additional single sheave on top of my starboard blocks. You can always stack doubles - but I would keep the reef on the boom- it doesn't make sense to complicate the boat for a minimal change in the actual location of the line and don't forget the K.I.S.S. principle ! :<) GO.
