boarding ladders--M-17

Does anyone out there have a recommendation for a boarding ladder for an M-17. Being an old fart, it occurs to me that if I should fall overboard I could not get back aboard unless I had a good boarding ladder...even at that it will be tough but it beats the alternatives. My boat is the "LITTLE BREEZE" an M-17, hull # 265. Thanks..Arnold

HI Gary, Hope all is well with you.... As far as reefing goes, for fastening the tack of the mainsail, are you using a ram's horn on the mast, or a hook arrangement that goes to a cleat? Thanks, Bones

Hull Transducers

Hi Gang, I have purchased new Navman instruments for my M23 and will be installing the transducers at fall haul out. Anyone have experience removing the old mushroom mounts that go into the hull? I would like to use the same holes. I have no idea what kind of adhesive was used to bed them. Suggestions? Thanks, Bones in Mpls

Reefing M17s

All this talk about slugs and slots got me to thinking about reefing. I have one reef point some 3 feet up, but I am wondering if anyone has found the need for a second or third. Does a furling headsail do the trick for reducing area up forward? Has anyone tried a jiffy reefing setup like the pricey Harken kit in the West Marine catalog? Looks workable to me, but I am only familiar with a cam cleat on the boom and a hook at the gooseneck, and lots of working room. Thanks, Tom Jenkins Scintilla

So that's why the slot is where it is. Interesting! On my last boat, a West Wight Potter (is one allowed to say those words on this forum?), I used two sail stops. One I positioned permanently below the gooseneck so that there was about an inch between it and the bottom of the gooseneck when the boom downhaul was tightened. The upper stop I installed just above the opening in the mast slot, after sliding the sail slugs into the slot. This worked out pretty well. The lower stop, combined with a topping lift, kept the boom from falling on the cabin top. The upper stop kept the sail from spilling out of the mast slot. But there was about 12 inches between the goosneck and the upper stop, so the main didn't drop all the way to the boom for neat furling when at dock or anchor. It never crossed my mind to relocate the slot opening. What a great idea! Thank you forum writers. Doug, on a sail without slugs, how do you manage to lower and re-tension the main halyard after tying in a reef, and how do you raise the sail again when shaking out the reef? Whenever I tried reefing with my bolt-roped main, the sail would spill out onto the cabin top when I dropped the main, and the bolt rope would bind at the top of the slot opening when I re-tensioned or re-raised the main. I converted to slugs. I'm kind of a newby, though. Is there a secret to reefing with a bolt-roped sail? The opening is placed there by convention for rope luffs which I prefer. I think you will find the vast majority of small boats using a rope luff with no slugs. Randy Graves and I were up there a week ago and we both had our kick-up rudders pop up going through the shallows at the entrance to the thorofare to Upper Priest. They might be able to slide through by heeling the boat, but it would not be a good place to get stuck if the wind was up. We had extremes from hot sunshine to torrential downpours. Twice during the week we were up in the middle of the night shifting our anchor set-ups due to unexpected wind changes. We pulled out early on Friday after hearing severe storm warnings on the weather radio. A few hours later Priest was hammered with the worst wind storm in memory. Gusts of 60 to 70 mph caused major damage in the area. Trees down all over, and as of yesterday the area was still out of power. There were reports that during the storm, the water level dropped 2 feet in Luby Bay (presumable due to the wind pushing the water toward the other shore), then when it came rushing back they had serious shoreline damage. Amazingly, no boaters were injured. Not trying to discourage folks from sailing Priest Lake. This was the 4th week long trip I've done up there, and normally in the summer the nights are calm and clear, with a nice sailing breeze coming up late each morning and then dying out late afternoon. We just happened to hit an unusual weather pattern. We did get in some great sailing last week, though, even getting in a 28 mile day on Thursday, sailing off the anchor and right into the marina slip. Larry

After we return to Seattle we will be leisurely heading east. Our next firm committment is Indiana in September.There is a possibility that we can do some sailing on Lake Coeur d' Alene. We would certainly enjoy sailing with any Montgomerys along the way. We don't have words to describe how much we enjoyed sailing the San Juan Islands with the Monty fleet. We're looking forward to sailing with others and are definitely planning on Lake Havasu this winter. Regarding Main Sail Slug opening

Norm, Closing the slot was pretty easy by just tapping it with a 16oz hammer. I did it when the mast was stepped, one hand supporting the mast while tapping it lightly. I opened the new slot with an Estwing nail puller. I mention the name because it is unique in that the flat nail puller is 90 degrees to the handle and not the curve type. This worked well. I was thinking of using a big screwdriver with a vise grip clamped on the shaft so I could get some leverage. The aluminum is very easy to shape so just go easy both ways. I made the new opening considerably smaller than the old one, just large enough to feed the sail slugs in after the gooseneck is in. I used a sail stop to hold the boom above the new opening. I found that the gooseneck slide was a bit smaller than the 1/2" sail stop slide so once the stop was in the opening I tweaked it a little so gooseneck would go in and out, but the sail stop would not come out. I don't have a picture, but I'll take one on Thursday and send it to you. I might try tomorrow, but I'm leaving home very early and might not get home before dark. Thanks for the tip on relocating the main sail slug opening. Last year I bought a new mast and had the slug opening positioned where it normally goes on an M15. The old mast had it below the gooseneck. Little did I know that the past owner knew what he was doing. This brings up the question of why the slug opening was designed to be above the gooseneck which causes all manner of problems when reefing and just taking the main down? Does anyone have the answer to why the above gooseneck opening was chosen? If not, I'm going to close the current location in favor of the lower one. Rick, what did you use to close the original slot, and what did you use to make the new one? Do you have a picture of your new location? Norm Bundek M15 #172
