Removeable hatch

I was crouching in the cabin and quite by accident raised up and the hatch popped up. I had been so preoccupied with getting things fixed up on the boat in the 6 months that I owned her that I never realized that the notches in the hatch slides mated up with like notches in the companionway hatch that would allow it to be completely removed. Now the standing head room I was looking for when I found the boat is there-sort of! Jerry was way ahead of Hunter and Catalina on this one! I see the newer models do not have this feature. Bobby and Dick, I dissected on of those once out of curiosity and it has a 17ah 12v Panasonic AGM battery inside. This is the same type of battery used in small UPS systems. Any larger of a battery and it will become a bit unruly to haul around. Bones

I'll confess I'm thinking more of camping right now than sailing, but you guys are a well-spring of information so it is worth asking. Has anyone used one of those portable "Jump Start" type power packs that you recharge at home and then carry? Bobbie

Hi to the group - new M17 owner in Connecticut

Thought I'd write to introduce myself - have been enjoying the list since October, when I went down to Annapolis and met Bob E. and Walt (Walt is an M17 owner from the DC area), who brought his M17 to show. I had gone down to Annapolis thinking about a different boat, but was really taken by the Montgomery, which I had only seen on the 'net before that. Walt's boat was in fine shape, and Bob was installing a new boom vang while we talked, so I got a great lesson in the boat's construction and characteristics. Walt generously offered a sail if I could drive back down to Annapolis later in the month, so I took him up on it and we spent a fine afternoon in a pretty good breeze in an area about 10 mi south of there. I was hooked! The boat handled much better than similar-sized boats that I had sailed, with barely no hull pounding and flexing, and we zipped along quite a bit more quickly than I would have guessed. After that, Bob made sorting out the details very easy, and he tells me he's just about done with Lily (for my 3-year old daughter) - I can't wait. I've been a sailor for 20 years, but never a boat owner. Thus, I'm confused about lots of things. The Boss has vetoed back-yard boat work, so a local shop will do the epoxy barrier coat and bottom paint when Lily gets here. Anyone who wants to share advice about products to choose or avoid, and more than that, some guidance on what I might expect for reasonable quotes from the yard for this work, can contact me - much appreciated. I'll keep the list posted as things progress, and will advertise "arrival day" and "launch day" when I have one. Anyone within driving range who wants to come down to the area (the boat will be at a marina in New London, CT) to help with first-sail jitters is more than welcome! Way to go STEVE!!!! It's Out! WooHoo!!! That's the hard part (I think, .......or at least I hope..........oh geez do I hope).......... I'm barrier coating my swing keel today. I'm done fairing and fiddling with it. Now I can put it aside and move on to the "fun" stuff. It came out pretty good all things considered. Keel-a-monster

To the point, I removed my fixed keel (stuck keel) and horsed it into the back of my pickup for further work. I had planned on waiting until summer, but with the stuff Sean is going through, I wanted this project behind me. Additionally, although the month of March is typically good sailing in Arizona, a long business trip and several weekend social obligations pretty well nixed the sailing opportunities. Drawing on the experience of others on this list, I proceeded as follows: 1. Took down the mast and removed the outboard and other heavy objects from the rear of the boat. 2. Hitched the boat up and trailered it down to the lake to get the bunks wet (and slippery-er) 3. Backed the boat back into my dry storage spot and ran a rope through the bow eye to the base of the fence posts (near their concrete footers) 4. Set the bow winch rope at approximately 28" back 5. Pulled the trailer forward under the stationary boat 6. Secured the boat bow to the trailer 7. Backed the boat trailer out over the depressed wash behind my dry storage spot to make room for the keel to drop 8. Removed the stop pin and went about lowering the keel After several hours of pulling, hammering, and wiggling (the keel) I finally got the back end out of the keel trunk. I had to trench a little of the wash (about three inches more) to finally get enough room to slide the keel out. From here I drug the keel up to the truck and eventually got it into the back. The keel is a little rusty but not as bad as I expected. It is not immediately obvious what was hanging the keel up when it was about halfway down. I may try Sean's idea of planning a board the thickness of the keel (after sandblasting) and stick it into the slot to see where it hangs, if any. Anybody know what the idea slot width is supposed to be? At any rate, the experience of others on this list helped me formulate the plan I used. I will try to post some pictures later this month. Removing the keel went well dropping it out into a wash. I think I will use a nice flat concrete surface with the aid of a forklift to put the keel back in. >From dry dock, Steve Shenkel <>< _/) M17# 263 Glendale, AZ
