If you sail in from SF Bay you do have to watch the tides and make it through the river entrance on a flood tide. But the prevailing winds tend to blow you up the river to Stockton. (Not sure how it is to head towards Sacramento.) In the Delta itself the waterways are very spread out and not very strong currents. I never heard of the floating campgrounds. Sounds great! We used to launch at Herman and Helen's Marina where some friends had their boat, and the Marina rented out this thing called a "camp-afloat." It was a flat houseboat base that one could rent and then drive a motor home or trailer onto instead of renting a whole houseboat. (Houseboating is big on the Delta.) We stopped at one small marina once, I think in the Rio Vista area, where the outhouses were labelled "Inboard" and "Outboard." Bobbie

re: M-15: Location for depth transponder?

Norm, I tried my new fish finder with the "plastic bag of water method" today. I had a good reading with the transducer under the starboard berth, at the rear-inboard corner. I just motored and did not sail. When loading the boat I asked my wife to get the cables from behind the car seat, however she did not get the transducer and I did not notice until we were out in the middle of the lake. So I made a quick trip out again just to check the sonar. The five foot alarm signaled well before I got to the trailer, with plenty of time to pull up the centerboard. My Braille method of finding obstacles is now history. I will try the fish finder again with the "silly putty method" on a non-holiday and see how it goes when she is heeled over. Regarding Delta Sailing

I live in Southern California and wonder how you sail in the Delta? Isn't the Delta rivers with a current? I've traveled over the Sacramento and American rivers by road and observed a pretty fast current. How can an M boat make headway on this waterway. Are there areas of low or no current. Because it sounds like a great place. Norm M15 #172

Just finished the "backwater environmental escape rondevous" (BEER 05) (I only had one day of the three day cruise). Met John Edwards there with Miss T and there was another M17 that didn't make Navarre Beach. I had the only Monty 15 which stood out among the Mac's, Potters, Santibels, Hunters, and Catalinas and a few custom built boats ("what a cute little boat") The BEER guys launched at Chico Bayou on Pensacola bay and had a 28 mile run down Santa Rosa sound to Navarre for the first days run. There were some 40 boats from the TrailerSailors group there from all over the USA and one from Canada. Since I had to get back to Mobile Sunday afternoon for a wake, I launched at a ramp on Santa Rosa sound some 8 miles from Navarre and had a great sail to the stopping point (Juana's Pagota, a beach bar and grill). I was the first to arrive and anchored up in some 30" of water a few yards off the beach. I was shortly joined by a new Suncat with two couples from P'cola. As we were having lunch, some more boats arrived, two Seapearls and a Seaward 25. We walked down the each and welcomed them as the rest of the crowd arrived. There was a standing party in the water as we met the folks and helped the boats run their stern anchors onto the beach. The party continued into the night and after a good night's sleep in the spacious cabin of my M-15, I awoke. I waved goodby to the bleary eyed crowd and raised sail for the run back home. I had a nice run, wing and wing with my (red) 150 poled out. I left the Potter 19 who came out with me far behind since I had a schedule to stick to. I understand that the group had a wonderfull time with a second night's stop at Pensacola Beach and the third night's sleep in Grand Lagoon. Those of you who surf the Trailersailor Net will have doubtlessly have read the other folks accounts of the trip and seen the photos of sandy white beaches, blue water and clear skys. I hear that there will be an article in the Small Craft Advisor about the trip. Fair winds Don

Hi Bill, What a lovely description of Delta sailing. Makes me want to hook up and head West to try it out, but I still have a lot of nice places in the East to explore first. Sure makes your mouth water though, doesn't it? As you so nicely put it, there's always something interesting around the next bend.......... But your floating campsites are a totally new one........... Who dreamed that up? How long is the line to get one of these sites? Connie M15 #400 Right Coast

I'll second the recommendation for the Delta. That's a great place to sail a small boat. The big yacht owners tend to be wimps- sail down from the Bay and then motor back- but a small boat can go anywhere and tack in a narrow channel. It's probably the light bulb but I need daylight to see how to get the cover off the light (the garage isn't well-lit) and need my wheels back before I can pull it out. I checked the hitch height and I needed the other hitch so I'll go back tomorrow and exchange it. I'm trying to figure out what I read on Washington's DOL site about registration. One place it says all boats with propulsion must be registered including sailboats over 16 feet. In another place it says all boats with motors, including sailboats, under 10 HP pay some particular rate. Anyone know if I have to register my M15 in Washington? I cannot keep it registered in California if it isn't here at all. Bobbie

Bill, Just put in a reef or two. You can always shake them back out if you find you don't need them. You'll be surprised at how well your boat will sail, even in tough conditions when she reefed properly. there is no way to REALLY learn how to deal with this stuff but to get out there and do it. Sounds like a nice vacation. Wish I had time to do that too, right about now. Bobbie, I have a 1984 Trail-Rite trailer for my M-15 too. When I first got the boat I went to the local trailer shop for a drop hitch, they said trailers should tow level. That was 16.5" to the top of the ball in my case. For what it's worth they told me sitting a little higher than level on a single axle trailer wasn't too bad, as compared to too low (untill I got the correct length drop hitch). George
