M-15, Help locating correct replacement parts by new owner

Help!! I just bought a nice M-15 but the Mast crutch that mounts on the transom while trailering and the porta-potti could not be found by the seller. I would like to find original or correct after market replacements. Also looking for any light air headsail and/or spinnaker for the M-15. Used is OK but not worn out. If you have, or know of any leads, I would greatly appreciate your help in this matter. Oh! and does anyone know a source for the original M-15 stern rail? Portable toilet for M15

Ken, Sounds good. I spoke wit ha couple of gents I sail with and we may try for Fri. We'll probably meet somewhere east of Houston and motor on out together. The Messabout can be whatever the participants want. If you want to be in the late summer regatta, go ahead. It would start at about 1:00 and have three races. Usually light winds this time of year. As a messabouter, I suggest a single race if we have enough interest. I guess just play it by ear. Launch area has a tie up dock. The cove area has a steep enough shore for boats like the Montgomerys to beach using an anchor to shore. The beach is better suited for paddlers and dinghies. Down here in Florida you can expect standing 1x19 wire to last about 10yrs before the terminal swages begin to show cracks. Cracks generally show up at the bottom swage before the top...water stands there. Some experienced sailors swap ends every season to lengthen the life. The rigging shops used to tell us to change wire at 10yrs regardless of what it looked like. I have personally witnessed wire that looked perfect (bright and shinny) on a Pearson Triton sloop and it broke strands when we took it down and coiled for storage...wire gets stretched and brittle over time. I watched several old time cruisers take their standing rigging down once a year and wash with detergent and fresh water. Then soak the terminal ends in pure lemon oil...without additives. I never tested this but it was done frequently in the yard I was berthed in Ft Laud. The swaged ends will also let go before you see any cracks...this has happend to me on two boats with unknown age of rigging...one had rolled swaging and the other nicropress. Lower shrouds usually go first. Bill P.

The Boat US insurance magazine - "Seaworthy" has the lead article for July on standing rigging failure. Factiod - 82% of rigging failures occur in less than 15 kts. Notes from the article.. "Stainless steel owes its corrosion resistance to the protective oxide film that forms on the surface when exposed to oxygen. Starve the metal of oxygen, however, or shield it somehow, and the protective film will soon break down and crevice corrosion can begin. As its name implies, crevice corrosion occurs within crevices and other surface irregularities common in rigging that can shield oxygen out yet trap high concentrations of corrosive salt (chloride) crystals. The higher the salt content, the greater the corrosive activity." . . "If you live in northern regions, you may be scratching your head and wondering what the fuss is about. Your rigging may have lasted 20 years without so mauch as a blemish of rust appearing. That is because every 20 deg. F increase above freezing can double the rate of corrosion, which is why rigging deteriorates much faster in in the tropics, aided by a higher salinity in the seawater." . . . "Although fitting can certainly fail without any visible warning signs, the good news is that, given time, any degree of corrosion witin a crevice or stress crack will ususally discolor and weep rust stains before complete failure." . . . ..."Some people melt bees-wax or dab grease around the terminal opening after assembly, but this is not nearly as watertight and will only encourage corrosion if water gets by or is alrady within. hello Gents, I use a simple method. I put a piece of carpet around the mast, coil the shrouds and use sail ties to secure them to the mast. The carpet keeps the shrouds from chaffing against the mast, metal to metal. It keeps everything coiled nicely. It tales 2-3 minutes. Regards, Randy W. I'd estimate it won't take more than 5 minutes if you have strips of plastic shopping bags precut, and a roll of duct tape lying on the sail locker. On the M15 you are only coiling the forestay and the two shrouds. When I've finished coiling them I fasten the coils to the horizontal mast - again using my plastic bag strips and duct tape. They ride happily that way for the distances I travel - 250 miles up to Lake Champlain and back. If I were going cross country, I'd probably remove all shrouds and stow them, coiled, in the cabin. After a trip like that, half an hour more to rerig everything is perfectly acceptable. It saves on wear and tear on the trip. Hi Rich, The port sail locker is where I keep my "Claw". I have a narrow milk crate type of box that holds the rode, chain and anchor: always ready for use. My guess is that it should hold very well in 20 kt winds, though I've only used it as a lunch hook. But holding strength is more a function of the type of bottom you are using. If you have a nice sandy bottom, you get excellent holding power. If it is soupy mud, you'll need a Danforth with large area to hold under those conditions. That's why anchoring is an art form for sailors, and why you need different tools (anchors) for different bottoms. Don't hesitate to use two anchors. You sleep much better knowing that two anchors are down and holding, than just using one. Two anchors also restrict the boat's desire to "sail" around the anchor. With one anchor, your boat might fall off and sheer away in one direction until the anchor rode jerks the bow to a stop. The stern then swings around, the bow falls off in the other direction and the dance starts all over again. Two anchors down, and that dance is cut to almost nothing. Connie

Hi Connie: I just ordered a 4.4 pound claw anchor through Boat US. I imagine it must be small enough to fit in Really's port locker. It's supposed to have 150 # holding strength. Is that enough to hold a Montgomery 15 in a 20 knot wind? Thank's for your help. Rich Cottrell
