MWH VCD or SVCD: possible project
Hi All, While tinkering around on my computer today I decided to make a vcd out of all the MWH videos I have in MPEG format so I could play them in a stand alone dvd player on my TV. Well the mini project worked and I was wondering about making a video collection, something like Senz's, on VCD. I am able to make NTSC or PAL vcd's so they would be compatible with European TV's. The fans in the UK are unable to view Senz's video compilation and this would be the closest to a universal medium outside of dvd and on a much cheaper and easier to duplicate media, cdrs. The quality wouldn't be as good as Senz's unless I captured his video in MPEG2 and made a SVCD(super vcd) however I don't have the video capturing equipment to do that. These videos are old and they would look about the same as they do on VHS tapes except with the ease of dvds. Anyhow, what I was wondering was how many of you would be interested in this project, how many of you live in the UK and how many of you own DVD players that are capable of playing VCDs and SVCDs. Most newer DVD players are capable of playing vcd's and even MP3's and Kodak picture cds so check your manuals to see what your player is capable of. Even some of the newer bottom of the line players (like Apex selling for $60) can play these discs and more. Of course these discs will play in your PC but the idea is to have them play on your tv and skipping tracks with your remote. I you live in the UK and have a DVD player that plays VCDs let me know as I'd like to send a sample to somebody to test compatibility with PAL tvs and get your feedback on the quality. Then I'd need everyone's help in finding the rest of the videos I don't have in MPEG format as I only have 5 videos so far. I'd appreciate your comments, suggestions and feedback. Thanks everyone! Regards. Alec --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Health - Feel better, live better
I have a DVD burner- so if someone can get the videos into MPEG2 format I should be able to transfer them to DVD recordable. Right now I don't have the software to convert to MPEG2. Dave, what DVD format do you use? DVD+R DVD-R DVD+RW DVD-RW DVD-RAM I could encode MPEG2 without custom compression. You'll get alot of compression artifacts, posterization effects, etc., though. I really don't know which one... it's a Sony DVD R/RW burner. I've only burned CDRs on it so far. Alec, believe it or not but I've mailed more copies to Australia, New Zealand, England, Germany, Sweden and France than I have to North America!! I think an SVCD would be an interesting project but maybe you should keep the videos in NTSC as you'll be distorting them if you try to convert to PAL. Also, overseas people seem to be more able to play NTSC than we North Americans are able to play PAL. Senz, True, the UK is far more NTSC friendly than we are PAL friendly. If you can convert your D8 videos to MPEG2 then this project would be a breeze. I have the software to make the SVCDs but not the hardware to capture the video off say a vcr. As an SVCD the project would probably have to be multiple cdrs but dvd style menus can be made allowing you to select tracks/chapters with your remote. There could be 1 cd for videos, one for interviews and one for tv appearances. The purpose of the project would be for ease of use and distribution. It must be a pain duplicating a 2 hr vhs tape everytime somebody wants one plus sending tapes back and forth etc. Plus, some of us don't own vcrs anymore! Senz, why would there be artifacts and posterization if the videos were converted without custom compression? Anyhow, are there any more thoughts/question/comments or ideas from any of you. And, back to my original question, how many of you own DVD players that can play VCDS? Thanks for everyone's input. Alec Senz <senz317@yahoo.ca> wrote: > The fans in the UK are unable to view

Senz, why would there be artifacts and posterization if the videos were converted without custom compression
because compression can be done many different ways. For example if there's alot of motion you need to adjust the compression for it. If a darker scene appears then you need a different type of compression. More detail, increase bit-rate. This is how commercially produced DVD's are done. And it ain't done overnight! Sometimes they take months to do it properly. VCDs and SVCDs are even worse since you also have the problem of even smaller bandwidth and lack of space. Anyway, if people REALLY want a 4-disc SVCD of v2.0 let me know and I'll whip it together for you. Oddly enough, a 4 CD pack weighs more than a VHS tape. So, the shipping will likely increase. I'll find out what return shipping will be sometime next week. Send 4 CD-R's with standard size cases included. (I don't want to be messing with someones scratched discs and I'll need the protection for the cover art). Include a return envelope. The rest of the details are on this website: http://www.geocities.com/senz317/v2.html If more than 10 people want this, I'll even get covers printed (like I did for the VHS tape) instead of printing them with my ink-jet. Hey, it's a plan! Senz ______________________________________________________________________ Post your ad for free now! http://personals.yahoo.ca
I'd like the SVCDs but was wondering if I could send the cdrs in paper cd envelopes to cut the shipping weight. Also, do you accept any kind of electronic payments like PayPal for the shipping charges/ Do you accept US funds? Why not post the covers on your site so they can be downloaded and printed by us so you can save ink? Thanks Senz!! Alec Senz <senz317@yahoo.ca> wrote: > Senz, why would there be artifacts and
