It could be either a bad calibration of the needle, or a bad connection to your PC. I assume it's all tracks rather than just a few? I did this recently -- archive all KLF vinyl to CD -- and everything was of equal volume. As an example of a wavform from a badly calibrated record player, rip some of the tracks off Ultra Rare Tracks (AYNIL is one, IIRC). -paul

I don't think there's any mono recordings, except possibly samples (the big "Top of the Pops" sample on "1987", for example) but what about recordings off the radio? Would this work? I know on the web there's a few off-air recordings kicking about - I'm thinking particularly here of a run-down of the chart from summer 1988 with The Timelords at number one. Hope this is of help! Since I am just recording some KLF 12"s to my PC (again and again)... could it be possible that, due to the technology, the right channel on records is slightly louder than the left channel? Or is it just me and my crappy (SB Live 2 Audigy Z, 5.1 surround) setup? Both B-side tracks on 005R seem to be a bit louder on the right side, both from listening and checking in Cool Edit Pro. Is there any KLF/JAMS record in mono so I could calibrate my recording settings? ..::// Thomas

I've mentioned yousendit.com before -- it's a temp host server for files up to 1gb in size. It says files are available for a limited amount of time for a limited amount of downloads. I'm a member of a few groups who utilize this and have yet to been denied when downloading. It should also be mentioned that this Space 5.1 disc can only be played on DTS machines. This shouldn't be an issue these days, but I've seen posts in the forementioned dts newsgroup from people complaining they are only hearing static from these discs - this is the result of analog playback. The CD player must have a pure digital output (coax or fiber) and hooked up to a 5.1 receiver. One of these two must be able to decode DTS. It can also be played on a DVD player, but again, there MUST be a pure digital connection to your receiver. Standard RCA connectors will not work. to cover all bases, make sure your DVD player can play CD blanks. Some older models can't. -paul

Delurking, sorry... I'd love to get my hands on that Chipping Norton vid, and the Space DVD sounds interesting too. Maybe we ought to get a list going of what material everyone has, and put together a KLF DVD collection for distribution via a tree? (a trading tree I mean, not a piece of wood!). I hope somewhere I have most of the material from the aborted K-Front discs, but looking for it now I've a nasty feeling it got lost in a disk crash... if need be I can have a dig around for the original CDRs. As for rare audio, flac or similar is definitely the way to go... can fit multiple albums onto a DVD but there's no loss in quality. Steve P.S. I've compiled three DVDs (one of the movies "White Room", "Waiting", "Stadium House"; a second of promos and live footage; and a third of documentaries, including a short one on Acid Brass which I think is probably unique) which I was going to sending out to Paul at some point - but I've lost the first one! (resending because apparently I'm new to the internet and haven't quite figured out how to use it yet) I hate to say it, but I think the Quad analogy is probably right. I bought one of the first DVD-A/SACD combo players when it hit the market for a fair dollar, and it got great use, but I don't think I've purchased a new disc in WELL over a year. Granted, there were some fantastic releases early on, the support from retailers and labels were just not there. Likewise, the inherent flaw of the format is that it breaks with the traditional mass market applications of music by requiring a true sweet spot to really be of any good use. I was reminded of this the other day when I attempted to play a Billy Joel SACD while I was in another room doing dishes, and could barely hear the vocals. After checking behind the stereo to make sure all cables were attached, I realized the solution was simple... The vocals were rooted firmly in the center channel, which was aimed dead center of the couch. Listener location being anywhere outside that ruined the experience. That said, there are some fantastic homebrew 5.1 DTS mixes posted in alt.binaries.sounds.dts . KLF foreign issues

One of the older fans, this, and those who were in "at the beginning". As a mere 1991 convert you'll have to forgive me! :-) In 1988, following the international success of the Timelords, there seems to have been a few interesting foreign issues of KLF releases. I'm thinking here of the TVT label, with its different versions of "Pure Trance 1" or the 3-inch CD single of "Doctorin' the Tardis" - and even "History of the JAMs" issued in the US and Australia rather than "Shag Times"? Were these issues ever mentioned in KLF press releases? Did Bill and Jimmy have any input into what went on abroad - and did they perhaps promote this issues at all? Things like the "WTIL (Power Mix)" or "Burn the Beat (Possum 7" Edit)" ... were they mentioned in the UK as being rarities at the Who, for example, would have decided to remove "Whitney Joins the Jams" from the Aussie "History of" CD but leave it on the US TVT issue? Or who decided to put the "live 1989" version of "WTIL" on the US "PT1" 12"? Or remove the LP Mix of "LTTT" from non-UK "White Rooms"? Why sheep? John >
