Well . thanks to everyone's responses about "Last Train" and "Go to Sleep" as they appear in TWR movie (please note, a third version also appears in the soundtrack, near the beginning of the Sierra Nevada scenes, but that IS KLF8R "Remix 2", so it need not bother us here. And I think, on reflection, "Go To Sleep" with the extra verse is probably just the 12" version. So that shouldn't bother us either). One or two points - the first "LTTT" track is definitely NOT "The Sheriff of Mu Mu County." Going by the (wonderful) interview rams downloadable from brandnew.co.uk, "The Sheriff ." was a late 1990 reworking of "The Lover's Side" (in particular, the horn section) which was probably intended either for "The White Room" JAMSLP6 (along with "Born Free", it's the only JAMSLP4 aborted track that doesn't reappear on its 1991 namesake). I had never really thought about the vocals/lyrics elements of JAMSLP6 before, but that is a very good point. "LTTT" in its many incarnations seems to made up various little bits of a jigsaw, made in different permutations, all leading back to a source. I don't think that source was "Go to Sleep". I think it was something earlier - something far less "song-y". I also think the story that KLF8R is a radical reworking may be a typical KLF smokescreen. It's a radical reworking of "Go To Sleep", fair enough - but it's still recognisable. I would be very surprised if KLF8T didn't have the trilling keyboards (although the trumpets would be another matter) and a tune which is essentially the same. Anyway, talking of "Go To Sleep", that's where I'm off to now ... John PS - Please feel free to use the title of this post as a name for a radical KLF/Sun-era Elvis Presley soundclash 12".

Hi, this is a long 'un! I think Derek might have stumbled across something with the "Go To Sleep" sample on the WTIL "Virtual Reality Mix". The same sample also appears on the Moody Boys remix (and forms at least a third of that track in an edited version that appears in "Deep Heat 8"). I'd never really thought much about the "e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-go to sleep" bit, but it's highly possible that that's were "e-Train" comes from. I also suspect that the title might be a colossal joke by of Bill and Jim - one that re-appeared on Altern-8 tracks like "Brutal-8-e", the band "Smart E's" and "Ebeneezer Goode" by the Shamen (which actually includes two more "e"s in its title than it should). My final thoughts on E-Train/KLF8T/Go to Sleep are as follows: Originally there was "Last Train to Trancentral" the mother lode, recorded as "Pure Trance 5", and from this recording everything else comes. It PROBABLY featured very little vocals, apart from Maxine as she appears on JAMSLP6 (not singing "Go To Sleep", but singing "Last Train-ain-ain ...") It also featured samples of trains themselves, and the original "trilling" noise sometimes known as "Rolling Stock". It was probably similar in structure to KLF8R's b-side, but contained more of the keyboard riffs and production values of the later "Go To Sleep". A few months later, the trains samples were removed (this is totally hypothetical, by the way, but I'd be VERY surprised if the original "LTTT" didn't sample a train somewhere) and the track (still unreleased) was re-mixed to become more of a "pop song". This is the track from the demos known as "Go To Sleep". This was the KLF's attempt to re-record "LTTT" (original) more in the style of "Kylie Said to Jason" (which, of course, they hoped would be a big commercial hit in mid-1989). The "trilling" noise was over-laid with a horn section, and the "Go To Sleep" choir and singing, and Bill's vocals, were added. Certainly, in my opinion, it is the only track on TWR soundtrack (apart from "Kylie" and "3AM") that seems to scream "potential single!" when you hear it. An extended 12" version was also recorded, but abandoned after the pulling of the soundtrack album. Now, it's late 1989 and the KLF are starting to develop ambient. I would imagine this would have been the perfect time for the (still) unreleased mass of recording they'd done as "LTTT" and "Go To Sleep" to be re-worked as "E-Train to Trancentral". Going by the samples featured on "WTIL (Virtuality Mix)", there is certainly an even more ambient version of the track going around than even features on "Chill Out", still with the "Go To Sleep" vocals intact, bent and distorted to fit with the ambient beats (probably quite similar to "A Huge Ever-Growing Pulsating Brain", which would have been contemporaneous). It's possible that as 1989 drew to a close, "E-Train" was abandoned due to the impending recording of "Chill Out", but its spirit lived on in KLF8R (Remix 1) which definitely DOES feature trains, to quite a silly degree. And is also arguably the most ambient 12" track the KLF have ever done. KLF8R (Remix 2) on the other hand is basically an introduction to "Chill Out". I know it differs from "Witchita Lineman Was a Song I Once Heard" slightly - "and from somewhere, I hear" - but to the untrained ear, it is basically the same track. It seems as if, after nearly a year of buggering about with it, the KLF were finally happy with the mix (which is why by 1991 they were prepared to just tell people it was the Original version, rather than a b-side to the remix twelve inch of the original version). Anyway, what does it matter? It was nearly 15 years ago ;-) John

Scotty Moore's guitar playing would lend itself well to KLF tracks given the slide guitar, US feel of many of them. I only wish i had the software skills to blend some of these myself. Interesting topic (yet again) re LTTT. I've always wondered about the E-train mix. I need to go back to watch to the White Room and listen to the backing. I did post a question a year or so ago about the sountrack that accompanies the visuals, and someone posted on the list that the soundtrack was a list member addition. Now i may have a different copy to you with different backing. I will have to listen more closely. Hi, I just wondered if anyone could tell me where exactly IS Madrugada? Is it the village in Spain where they filmed the "White Room"? Also, according to: http://www.sonar.es/s96/e/musica1345.html there is a book called "La Madrugada Eterna" by Paco Peiro (who also wrote about Roxy Music) which "offers us a voyage through time and space: from the innocent speculation of the space age to the lucid fatalism of the post industrial suburbs ..." Anyone read it? Did it come out before 1989? John

KLF 8T - where are you?

Hi, everyone, I just spotted something interesting whilst watching "The White Room". In fact, I've suspected it for a while, but not checked until now . Immediately after Jimmy's scene in the scrap yard, the soundtrack plays a version of "Last Train to Trancentral" that I've never heard before. It cuts into the song just after the first trademark trill, when the drums thump at the end. It sounds like the Pure Trance version, but overlaying it are chords and keyboard parts from "Go To Sleep". I'm making a big assumption here, but I wonder if this is actually a segment of KLF 8T (i.e., the original ORIGINAL "Last Train to Trancentral")? Bare in mind, the Pure Trance mix we have on the CD single is technically "Remix 2" from KLF8R. Another minute or so into the film, Bill and Jimmy are parked beside a roaring fire. The music playing now IS definitely "Go to Sleep". However, again it differs from the version we're all aware of. The verse is the "lust has not left me" one - but the chorus that follows is twice the length of the mix from the Demos. Maxine sings "Go to Sleep" firstly on her own, and THEN the choir come in and sing it all over again. From the unreleased 12" mix of "Go To Sleep", maybe? Sorry if this all seems appalling trainspotter-y, but with so many different unreleased mixes and even titles for "LTTT" in 1988-89, I thought it might spark a discussion in the group. Or at least make us all dig out our bootleg videos and mpegs again! Thanks, John
