As you may know, next Saturday (8th March) is the 25th anniversary of "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" original radio show. I'm attempting to collate a list of all bands/records which have sampled bits of this series - the Orb's "Blue Room", for example, or Jam and Spoon and Radiohead. As far as I am aware, the KLF themselves never sampled "Hitch-Hiker's" in any form (during their ambient days anyway) - but I may be wrong. I wonder if any of the "new" remixes or bootlegs that have popped up in recent years (some of which I've never heard) contain "Hitch-Hiker's" samples. If anyone knows of any record (KLF or otherwise) which contains samples from the show, please feel free to e-mail me off list. Secondly, does anyone know if Bill Drummond was involved with the Ken Campbell stage show of "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy"? It was done about two years after "Illuminatus!" (which Drummond was set designer on, I think), during the early days of Zoo Records. Presumably Bill had a day job somewhere though! Sorry if this seems a bit off-topic, but any help or info would be very much appreciated. You see a few bumper stickers around my corner of the US stating: "Who would Jesus bomb?" My country is deeply divided over the prospect of war. President Bush's approval ratings have now slipped to their lowest point since election. Average Americans are asking, "Why Iraq? Why now?" The US economy, once the envy of the world, has stalled and is in a tail-spin. Unemployment is on the rise and cities are facing staggering budget crises. What is Bush's reply to this turn of events? Bomb Iraq. Oh, and tax cuts for the rich too. Economically, this war will hobble us. It's good to see the world is skeptical of Bush and his motives though. I support France and Germany's principled opposition to this war. Along with the large anti-war protests around the globe, France and Germany have slowed the US war machine. But now that Turkey has accepted the $14 billion dollar bribe to allow US troops on Turkish soil, the stage is set. I encourage people to keep speaking out against war. Please remember that another candidate won a majority of votes in our last election. Bush does not represent all Americans. Lennon's "Imagine" was banned, I think, because of the "no hell below us, above us only sky" line, which has got to be one of the most over-sensitive reactions in the entire history of censorship (at that's against some stiff competition). One final thing on the subject of the Gulf War and musical censorship. At the time, the big "heavy" bands with political axes to grind were U2 and REM (both on big labels). And yet, during and immediately after the War, they were releasing songs like "Shiny Happy People" and "Even Better Than The Real Thing", which were scarcely as zeitgeist-grabbing as the Drummond/Cauty "war trilogy" (as I have seen it described) of "America No More", "K Sera Sera" and "The Magnificent" (which all, interestingly, commented on different conflicts). And yet the KLF are seen (if at all) as a novelty pop act, and Bono and Stipe meet Popes, presidents and Pavarotti! I'm not slagging off U2 or REM here - I'm just saying that comments and artistic statements on this new War might come from the most unexpected places, and we should stay vigilant and supportive of such things. In answer to your questions (sorry, I don't know about the: (2) Why sheep? Erm, Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother" (cows) , Pink Floyd's "Animals" (pigs), the lovely picture itself on "Chill Out", the KLF sheep that appears in Stadium House, the same sheep appearing with Alex Paterson in early Orb gigs, sheep noise on various ambient records, sheep chewing grass in "Waiting", sheep mentioned on the sleeve of "It's Grim Up North", sheep actually pictured on the sleeve of "The White Room", "I Died For You" at the Brits '92, "The Orb Live '93 Evil Bro", the German "Chill Out" compilation (wolves), El Hammond Inferno's "My First Political Dance Album" (cows again, full circle), and a general comment of pop fans, perhaps? (3) The KLF did indeed become very big in Japan (see my question below). Big in Japan, conversely, did not become the KLF, though. They became the Lightning Seeds, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, the Wild Swans, Care, the Teardrop Explodes AND the KLF. "Nothing Special" indeed! (5) What the fuck is going on? My hat. It's cold outside. Oh, and my questions. The KLF's last appearance on "TOTP", in early 1992, was a showing of the promo video for "A:WTIL". Now, I have a memory of Bill and Jimmy introducing the clip themselves, whilst standing in the rain on the side of Mount Fuji in Japan. I think they might have even been "live" via satellite. Jimmy starts the intro, I remember, with a particularly jaunty "hello". Does anyone have this clip on video (it was repeated as part of the "Rock Family Trees" documentary on the Liverpool punk scene on the BBC about five years ago)? 1. What Ever happened to the DVD project? 2. Why Sheep? 3. Did The KLF become Big In Japan? 4. Does anyone know where I can get the 1987 - What The Fuck Is Going On? Mp3s. I downloaded them from Jammins Site but the end of All You Need Is Love got taped onto Next. Because my CD Burner puts a pause in between tracks it sounds weird. 5. What The Fuck Is Going On? By the way, I recently wrote to Mute Records about Triple A. They deny all knowledge about it and said that all Jimmy has ever recorded for them is 2K. What Do you guys/gals think?

During the last Gulf War (assuming we're about to embark upon Gulf War 2) radio stations in the UK were banned from playing certain records and others were altered ("3 AM Eternal" had the gunfire removed, and Massive Attack's name was shortened to "Massive", etc.). Now, just this afternoon, a DJ on Radio Scotland announced that he was going to play "Rock the Casbah" by the Clash, but "wasn't allowed to". He played "I Fought the Law" instead. Have I missed something, or have the Powers That Be (either the BBC or the government, or both) brought out the same ruling, twelve years later, banning the same tunes again? If so, there's been no reporting of it on the news. Sorry if this seems trivial, but considering we're not actually at war yet (and please God never will be), it seems amazing to me that DJs are being banned from playing certain records in mere ANTICIPATION of conflict! I was just listening to Mezzanine and thinking about the name change too. I'm not sure if it happened in the US as I've only seen a few examples of their releases with the name change online. Is the new album worth getting? I like everything else they've done. It would be cool to hear Jimmy remix of one their new tracks. Hi, My copy of KLF010P includes not only the poster but also a postcard, featuring the same Ford-Timelord-going-past-ruined-building "White Room" still. According to the Lazlo Nibble discography, this postcard came with the KSTJ promo video, rather than with the 12" poster edition. Does anyone else have a copy of KLF010P with a postcard, or did I just get lucky? John Scotland. Wish you were here.
