Fwd: Coalition to Keep the Lake Great - February 8th Meeting Notes
Greetings GSL Sailors, Attached you will find the meeting minutes from the last meeting of FOGSL (Friends of the Great Salt Lake). "Friends" is working to fight industrial encroachment on the Great Salt Lake in the form of evaporation ponds that if allowed could render the lake unnavigable. I strongly encourage you to review the activities that FOGSL is engaged in and to consider joining the organization if you are interested in helping to preserve the sailing community. A full list of relevant events as well as membership information can be obtained at FOGSL.org ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Lynn de Freitas <ldefreitas@earthlink.net> Date: Sun, Feb 14, 2010 at 11:27 AM Subject: Coalition to Keep the Lake Great - February 8th Meeting Notes To: Springmeyer Gwen <gwenspringmeyer@comcast.net>, O'Connell Ann < oconnell@xmission.com>, Tanner Laura <laura.tanner@law.utah.edu>, Merola Paul <sfarkus@yahoo.com>, Adler Robert <adlerr@law.utah.edu>, Robinson Kirk <lynx@xmission.com>, Carroll Lynn <bradlynnc@comcast.net>, Larson Matt < mateolarson@gmail.com>, Ray Jack <jray@fabianlaw.com>, Jewell Paul < jewell@earth.utah.edu>, Battle Cullen <cbattle@fabianlaw.com>, Gray Jack < jaggrays@q.com>, Grant Val <val@bioresourcesinc.com>, Ewing Josh < joshewing@mac.com>, Knudsen Sanne <sanne.knudsen@law.utah.edu>, Pace Jeff < japace@slco.org>, Noble Josh <joshn@averyoutdoors.com>, Sorensen Ella < 3868ella@comcast.net>, Montague Chris <cmontague@tnc.org>, Walker Joro < jwalker@westernresources.org>, Moench Brian <drmoench@yahoo.com>, Tennefoss Lynn <ltennefoss@audubon.org>, Richards Jeff <Jeff.Richards@pacificorp.com>, Paul Don <avocet@q.com>, Heileson Marc <marc.heileson@sierraclub.org>, Garner Craig <cgarner@ducks.org>, Hicks Jefre H <rjefree@msn.com>, Holt Rebecca <rebecca.holt@law.utah.edu>, Dinter David <david.dinter@utah.edu>, Fenimore Bill <BirderB@aol.com>, Small Michael <utahsmalls@msn.com>, Birkenshaw Kim <Duckit0199@yahoo.com>, Frankel Zach <zach@utahrivers.org>, Waddell Kidd <texlov@netzero.net>, Mueller Richard <rmueller@biology.usu.edu>, Collins John <jcollins@snowbird.com>, "Odd Charles W." <cwodd@infowest.com>, "Cavitt John, PhD" <jcavitt@weber.edu>, Cecil John <jcecil@audubon.org>, Pearce Maunsel <maunselpearce@mac.com>, Martinson Wayne < wmartinson@xmission.com>, Bellmon John <jcbellmon@msn.com>, Noble Rich < richnoble1@msn.com>, Ban Joel <joel.ban@gmail.com>, Dixon Bryan < bdixon@xmission.com>, Heath Bruce <bruce@greatsaltlakeaudubon.org> Cc: Martin Susan <skammerd@hotmail.com>, Gaines Emily <pelican@fogsl.org>, Brown Tim <twbslcut@yahoo.com>, Pearce Katie <kdpea@comcast.net>, Wilson Rob <robwilson@rowland-hall.org>, Otto Rachel <racheelizto@gmail.com>, Schofield Alisa <scho@csolutions.net>, de Freitas Lynn <ldefreitas@earthlink.net>, Lund Cindy <smch2do@gmail.com>, Dubuc Rob <rdubuc@westernresources.org>, Arce-Larreta Juan <juan231027@hotmail.com>, Dwire Scott <sdwire@comcast.net> Good afternoon everyone, Attached are the notes from our February 8th coalition meeting. Please pay particular attention to item # 2 - the mailer. The Executive Committee would like to know by February 23rd which organizations wish to have their names listed on the mailer. You'll recall that a very rough draft of the mailer was attached to the January 11th meeting notes. That draft will go through extensive revisions and with any luck - will be available in a final draft form for our next meeting scheduled for March 8th. Whether or not you are listed will not preclude your ability to have copies of the mailer for awareness raising and fundraising, but please confirm with me asap so we can be sure to acknowledge everyone. The following list reflects - in some way, shape or form -partners/coalition members who are working on this campaign. If I have overlooked anyone, please let me know. FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake Utah Waterfowl Association The League of Women Voters of Utah The League of Women Voters of Salt Lake Utah Airboat Association Utah Chapter of the Sierra Club Utah Rivers Council Western Wildlife Conservancy Utah Wetlands Foundation Utah Physicians for a Healthy Environment Wasatch Audubon GSL Yacht Club National Audubon Bridgerland Audubon Ducks Unlimited The Nature Conservancy I think we can all agree that working as a coalition does not come without its challenges. Especially for a long term campaign like this one with its twists and turns and variable timelines, it's not uncharacteristic for a coalition to sort of "breathe". Unless you are working as an individual, most of us have to seek Board approval to sign on to comments or protests. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But the bottom line - as I see it - is to do our "collective" best by demonstrating our sense of commitment and involvement in the issue. For obvious reasons, a coalition that is comprised of a diversity of interests brings a particular strength to the table and in this case, this diversity speaks volumes about the level of public concern that exists with this proposed project. So as you work with your Board of Directors in helping them understand why this issue is so important to the future of Great Salt Lake and why your continuing involvement is so meaningful, I just want you to know how grateful I am to have the opportunity to work with you on this campaign - in whatever capacity you are able. And as we go forward, we'll continue to learn a lot about ourselves and certainly about Great Salt Lake. In saline, Lynn
