Fall and Winter Forecast

It appears a weak La Nina has formed. The current long-term forecast for the Great Salt Lake drainage area (Wasatch and Uinta Mountains) is for a wetter-than-normal winter. This is very good news for Great Salt Lake if it proves true. It is also looking like the lake level is stabilizing out. If so (and I say that with an abundance of caution), this would be earlier than normal and also spells good news for Great Salt Lake. Reminder - SATURDAY - Marina Cleanup and Wine & Cheese Social

Windy Season

October is just around the corner. This usually begins the windy season for the Great Salt Lake. October through April is our windiest time of year here with the area going through storm front season. Please make sure your boats are properly secured the dock lines in good condition. Make sure your furlers are wound tightly and secured. Make sure canopies, dodgers, biminis and other loose objects are secured properly. And, even if you are not planning on using your boats much during the winter season, don't forget to check on your boats on a regular basis.

Virgin Islands Damage

I know many of you have been to the Virgin Island. And some of you know it is one of my favorite places to go. I have been down there about 35 times now and was looking forward to going back in January. Those plans look in doubt now. Photos of the damage are now making onto social media and it looks like HELL swooped down and destroyed the place. What hasn't been destroyed is in serious danger of Hurricane Jose taking a direct hit on the islands in the next few days. Boat Registrations

I just walked the docks and I saw SEVERAL boats with old registrations. Even if your boat is registered it MUST have the current MONTH and YEAR sticker on it. I believe the Rangers will be out here next week to check boat registrations. Dave

Boat Registration - WARNING

The Park Rangers were out here a couple days ago to check on a matter. While here they noticed "several" boats with expired registrations. Although I don't think any citations were written at this time they did say this matter needs to be corrected ASAP and that they would return in a couple weeks. My guess is they will start writing citations at that time. Remember it is not good enough to have your boat registered. You must also display the proper year and month sticker on the hull. I do not have any influence in this matter. So if your boat is registered but does not have the stickers displayed I recommend you get them on ASAP. GSL MARINA Web Site

The GSL Marina web site www.gslmarina.com <http://www.gslmarina.com> appears stable again. There was never any risk to anyone clicking on the site. The site was just crashing on my end so I couldn't guarantee the forecast was updated and accurate. But the site has been stable for a week now. SHALLOW LAKE!

As I was setting a danger buoy over the hump just outside the mouth of the marina I watched two different boats approach the mouth. Both boats continued well west the red buoy just outside the mouth. I was afraid both of them were going to come to an abrupt stop due to the keel hitting a bioherm. This is just to remind everyone one that the lake is still SHALLOW. There is a LOT of SHALLOW reef just to the west of the marina mouth. The Danger buoy and the Green buoy just outside the marina mouth are anchored on or just right near the shallow humps. In order to keep the buoys in place they need a four-to-one scope. This means the buoys will swing on and off the humps. Stay clear of both buoys but favor the green one if you must get close to one or the other. When coming into the marina head for the red buoy and then turn straight for the center of the mouth avoiding both buoys. When leaving the marina, stay dead-center all the way and then head right for the red buoy. The lake is shallow which makes the mouth narrow still. Don't try to get two boats through the mouth at the same time. Nor go out while another boat is trying to get in. And remember the Dinner Boat will take up most of the mouth when exiting and entering. Once he commits to entering or leaving the mouth he is committed and becomes the right-of-way boat because he is now 'limited in his ability to maneuver'. All the reefs are still out there and are still shallow. Remember the Saltair Rule. NEVER sail so you can see the NE side of Saltair. You will be aground on the reef if you do.
