Re: [Fractint] Question on Fractint Image Resolution
"Tim Wegner" replied to a [Fractdev] posting:
Rich or anyone, can you remind me where Rich's FractInt for Windows executable and source is?
For many years, one could easily download the executable, the source, or both. Each was in a single "compressed" file format (tarball, zip, arc, etc.) and made accessible to the public. Now, this "FREEWARE" software seems to be getting away from allowing others access, not only the information about it (Spanky server being down and out) but to the source code. No longer can anyone retrieve the current working versions' source with a single download, nor are there any instructions for doing so on the web sites that are still functioning. An executable for Rich's Windows version is at: http://www.nahee.com/Software/FractInt_Setup_21-00_beta-5.msi And most of the older versions (both executable and source) may be found at the following: http://www.nahee.com/Software/+FractInt_(OLD)/ I would also have a copy of the Spanky site, but have yet to get RSYNC to acquire what is at: lin27.triumf.ca::spanky even though Noel said it was setup for me to retrieve to my IP address. I was hoping to have a full mirror for Spanky available. Sincerely, P.N.L.

If you point your svn client to http://fractint.net/fractsvn/trunk/fractint you should be able to get the current working version of the Fractint/Winfract/Xfractint source tree. This will be as up to date as of the last time I committed my changes. This will not always provide you with source that compiles or runs, but it *is* the most up to date. The last "official" source patch can be retrieved at: http://fractint.net/fractsvn/tags/fractint-20-04p09 Prior to switching to the subversion repository, we used a cvs repository, where providing anonymous access was problematic. Before we used a repository at all, I was creating diff files when I released a patch. Currently, when I create a patch, I put together an Xfractint source tarball, a Winfract release zip file (no source), and a Fractint release zip file (no source). All of which can be found at: www.fractint.org or www.fractint.net The last time the Fractint source was "officially" released was with version 20.0. The updated Winfract source has never been "officially" released. Yet, the source for the current developer's versions of both are readily available at the svn repository listed above. Jonathan

As has been mentioned before, it may all be there to download, but it sure does take awhile grabbing all of those separate files one at a time from the several folders at that URL. Could a single compressed file be made available, like it was for many years ?? Or maybe an FTP URL be established, so as to grab the whole directory path and all of it's files and sub-directories ?? It may be time consuming if you use the subversion web interface, but if you run a subversion client on your machine (e.g.Tortoise under windows, or svn itself under Linux), then getting all the files is no more than executing a single subversion checkout command. You do that once, and keeping up to date is trivial and fast. A subversion repository is far more powerful and versatile for our purposes that the ancient "zip the sources and distribute patches" method. We are not going back. Tim
Paul,

Your svn client will do the download for you. You could turn on compression if bandwidth is a problem for you.

Single compressed source files, at least since I started working with Fractint in 1991 (or so), have only been available for the official releases and the occasional time when we needed to sync the source of the various developers. The use of an svn repository makes this unnecessary. How is using an FTP URL to provide access to the source tree any different than using svn? Are you pointing your web browser at the svn repository or are you using an svn client such as TortoiseSVN? Jonathan
Hi Paul, WinHTTrack grabs the lot in 5 mins.... This is explained in one of the readme files on the webserver as how this site itself is updated... If you like I can email you a zip of it.. Regards Paddy

Rich is responsible for his version, which is maintained outside our fractint.net subversion repository. He certainly has my blessing to maintain it as he wishes, since it represents untold hours of his hard work. Thanks for the pointer to Rich's version. I'll ask him about it offline. Isn't spanky.fractint.org a complete mirror of spanky? Tim
Tim,
Isn't spanky.fractint.org a complete mirror of spanky?
Yes, and as of the weekend, it should be up-to-date. If anyone notices a difference, let me know and I'll try to correct it. The rsync run appeared to work fine. --Damien

I only checked one single web page: http://spanky.fractint.org/www/fractint/findex.html and immediately found that it was missing the Google image at the bottom, which should have been at: http://spanky.fractint.org/www/fractint/Google.png Personally, I have not got the time to "police" Damien's mirror site of Spanky, nor the time to check up on whether his RSYNC ran correctly and completely. This is why I am attempting to establish another complete copy of Spanky on my site. At least then I will know if it is up-to-date, correct, and working. Paul, You are the only one who thinks you need to "police" anything. IMO. Of course, the fact that spanky.triumf.ca is currently hard to reach means it's *difficult to verify* whether the syncing worked or not. Hence my rather reasonable post: I believed it to be correct, and cited the evidence for that belief. But we wouldn't want reasonableness to get in the way of a good dig. I can only sync to what Noel has on his Linux backup server anyway; if his backup is missing the image you found, then I can hardly sync and make it appear out of thin air. Oh, and the image in question appears to be a Google logo; clearly we are all impoverished by its absence from the bottom of the referenced page. I also note that this "quick check" actually required you to go from the Spanky home page to the FractInt home page and then to the FractInt index page (neither of those are the first link on either page) so I guess you actually did click quite a few things looking for a problem. Thank you for your assistance. --Damien Paul N. Lee wrote:

So you are implying that Rich's "beta" versions of FractInt, running under Windows, are no longer "open source" software ?? Does that also mean he can sell it or charge a fee if he so chooses ??
Thanks for the pointer to Rich's version.
You are more than welcome. :-) Sincerely, P.N.L. ------------------------------------------------- http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/PNL_Fractals.html http://www.Nahee.com/Fractals/

You are reading too much into what I said. I chose my words carefully and said he is free to maintain his sources as he wishes (e.g. not in our subversion repository). In any case I have always found Rich trustworthy and respectful of open source, so I'm not worried that he has forked the fractint software, which was his right. Tim
