FOTD -- February 15, 2011 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
With today's image we bid farewell to the parent fractal of the
past four days and turn to the fractal that results when the
formula Z^(1.88)+C is iterated 12 levels up the complex logarith-
mic hyper-ladder. This parent fractal is a multi-part one, a
single large Mandeloid surrounded by smaller Mandeloids, with
today's image located in a curling filament extending from one of
these smaller Mandeloids.
After due consideration, I rated today's image at a 6, which
lately has pretty much been the average. The name "Voice of
Authority" sounds like it means something important. Actually,
like a piece of modern art, it means nothing at all. The image
itself is a typical fractured thing that results when fractional
powers of Z are iterated. I put a little extra effort into the
coloring to bring out the reds and oranges as well as the smooth
beige interior, though I'm not sure what good it did.
The calculation time of 6-1/3 minutes is too slow to be a
bargain. I recommend viewing the finished image on the current
FOTD web site at:
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>

The current issue of a leading 'news' magazine has a cover story
about a so-called 'singularity' due to arrive in 2045, when the
machines man has created will become more intelligent than their
creators. According to the technologists, we will then have the
ability to transfer our unique stream of awareness into machine
bodies, becoming immortal androids. Of course, those unfortu-
nate people who don't live that long or who lack the money to
pay for the process will be left behind in the dust bin of
history.
It's a nice fantasy, but for some reason it strikes me as wish-
ful thinking. Maybe I'm missing something, but as far as I
know, not a single one of these future predictions has yet come
true as predicted. As for the current prediction, no one has
determined exactly what is the 'stream of awareness' that makes
each of us our individual unchanging selves. What is it that we
would transfer into the machine bodies? What stays the same
while the material of the body and the patterns in the brain
constantly change? Oh well, all I can say is, 'have a happy
dream'.
Monday dawned clear and mild here at Fractal Central, and by
midday the temperature had risen to 54F 12C. But shortly after
noon heavy clouds moved in and by sunset the temperature was
again down near freezing. The fractal cats made the most of
the off-and-on sunshine.
The rest of the day was uneventful. The next FOTD will be
posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and if your full
faith lies with science and technology, make the down payment
today on your new android body. (Do people actually believe
this stuff?)

I was looking for a deep zoom fractal to use for a HD video and I stumbled
across this one. I named it "Fan Overload" because of the proliferation of
structures that look like a hand held fan. I liked the colors and the period
doubling fans. Every four rings you get twice as many fans. I am in the
process of rendering a high resolution 1080p HD video of a zoom into this
fractal. It will take about 2 weeks to render the video on my PPC "render
horse" computer. I will update the website and post a link to the video when
it is ready. Here is a link to a webpage with an image and a parameter file:

FOTD -- February 14, 2011 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a half-evaporated one, lying in the same parent
fractal that gave us the past 3 days' images.
I stick with this parent fractal because of an intuition that it
holds some great images. So far however, these great images
have proved to be very elusive. Today's image for example, with
its rating of a 6, lies in the middle of the FOTD-average range.
In addition to being half evaporated, today's image is also
unusual in that it has been rendered with its inside parts set
to 'atan'. The setting doesn't seem to have done all that much
for the image however.
The reason for the name "Spots Before the Eyes" will be immedi-
ately apparent as soon as the image is seen.
The calculation time of 7-2/3 minutes may be cut significantly
by rendering the image with the passes reset to 'g', but doing
this will eliminate a good number of the spots.
Calculation may be avoided entirely by checking the finished
image on the current FOTD web site at:

Sunday was the warmest day in a couple months here at Fractal
Central, as the high of 48F +9C gave almost a spring-like
feeling to things. The remaining piles of snow and ice kept
spring fever at bay however.
The fractal cats spent most of the day on their shelf by the
heat, while my day was slow enough for laziness to take hold.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take
care, and what will those who do not enjoy fractals do to keep
themselves occupied during the infinite time span of an eternal
afterlife?

FOTD -- February 13, 2011 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image lies "Halfway to Infinity" in the same parent
fractal that held the images of the past two days. I'm not sure
where halfway to infinity might be located, since infinity has
no limit and half of infinity must therefore have no limit also.
The image lies on the brink of evaporation. A tiny increase in
the imag(p3) parameter, which sets the bailout radius, will send
the image over the brink, totally changing its character. A
huge increase to one-googol or so will result in a totally evap-
orated image, which must be made visible by setting the inside
to an active fill such as 'bof61'.
The rating of a 6 is fair enough. I might have raised it to a 7
or so if I had not been overtaken by an attack of laziness, and
had done more work on the color palette.
The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is very near FOTD average.
This brief wait may be avoided by viewing the finished image on

ity arrives in a half century or so, will it be for everyone or

FOTD -- February 12, 2011 (Rating 7.5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's 7.5 rated image lies in the same parent fractal as
yesterday's failure of an image. True, it lies in a different
part of the parent, but this has little to do with the improve-
ment. Most of the improvement is a result of the additional
work I put into the coloring.
Yesterday's 3-rated image is just a mass of colors scattered
haphazardly, with no apparent order, while today's image has a
unifying theme of subtlety. There are no patches of brilliant
gaudy colors in today's scene, only a rather soothing blend of
subtle pastel tints, almost resulting in a gray-scale image.
Since it did take a bit of effort to achieve this subtlety, I
rewarded myself with a half-point bonus.
The name "At-One-Ment" spells 'atonement' when the caps and
hyphens are removed. It indicates that today's image is an
atonement for the sorry excuse of an image I posted yesterday.
The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is certainly a far better
deal than the 12 minutes required for yesterday's image. And
even this brief effort may be avoided by checking the currently
active FOTD web site at:
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>
where the finished image is posted.
The original FOTD web site may be accessed at:
<http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/>
but the last time I checked, it was not up to date.
Friday here at Fractal Central began with a bone-chilling temper-
ature of +5F -15C. It warmed to above freezing in the afternoon
but then a veil of clouds moved in, weakening the sun and disap-
pointing the two fractal cats.
My day was close to normal. FL is quite enthused about the revo-
lution in Egypt. I think it has brought back memories of the
anti-Vietnam War protests she took part in so many years ago.
(Where did those 40 years go?)
It will not be 40 years before the next FOTD is posted. It will
be more like 24 hours. Until then, take care, and be ready for
whatever might be coming.

FOTD -- February 11, 2011 (Rating 3)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image came on strong. When I first saw the area of the
parent fractal, I thought I was really into something interest-
ing. And sure enough, I soon found a minibrot. But for some
reason, I simply could not find a color palette able to bring
out the hidden worth that I feel lay within the image. So here
is today's image, worth only a pathetic lowly 3.
Normally, I would not even consider posting such a scene, or I
would let it go with no rating, but today I wanted to emphasize
that, at least in my opinion, the image is an abject failure.
My alibi is a lack of time. If I had had more free time to work
with the colors, I might have found a better color palette.
On the technical side, the image is an 'evaporated' one, which
means it consists totally of 'inside' stuff made visible by the
'bof61' inside fill. The parent fractal certainly holds far
better images, and in the next FOTD, with more time to search,
I'll hopefully present one of them.
But for today, the way to escape the excessive 12-minute calcula-
tion time is to view the finished image on the active FOTD web
site at:
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>
the original but currently inactive FOTD web site may be
accessed at:

There was no FOTD on Wednesday because I spent the day back at
Old Fractal Central searching for the cause of a growing water
stain down one of the walls. It took about 15 minutes to trace
the cause to a hole at the edge of the roof that probably resul-
ted when recent heavy snow pulled down the rain gutter along
with part of the roof. The hole is letting water drain down
inside the wall.
I also noticed that a squirrel has taken up residence in the
attic, using the hole as its doorway. I made a very temporary
repair. A professional job is needed however, and the squirrel
will have to be evicted.
The sun was bright here at Fractal Central on Thursday, but the
morning temperature of 10F -12C set a very chilly tone to the
entire day. The fractal cats approved of the sun and spent the
afternoon sharing the warmth of the sunny shelf in the southwest
window.
My day was fully occupied with getting the work caught up. The
next FOTD is due to be posted in 24 hours. In all likelihood,
it will appear as scheduled. Until next time, take care, and
may the force be with those in the right. (I leave it to the
individual to decide who or what is in the right.)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
In today's image we get down to the nitty-gritty, which is what
I named it. This is a picture of a miniature Mandeloid caught
in the process of trying to morph itself into a well-defined
baby Mandelbrot set. But with an exponent of `Z' of only 1.913,
the little fellow lacks the material he needs to pull himself
into perfect shape. The intent and effort are there; only the
material is lacking.
I gave the minibrot a somber gray background to show that regard-
less of how hard he tries, he will never reach full mandelhood.
But look at the richness he has created in his surroundings in
his futile struggles to achieve perfection. His efforts alone
certainly rate the 6-1/2.
In addition to the lack of a solid `2' for an exponent, the mini-
brot at the center of today's image also suffers from a lack of
a sufficient maxiter. The rather anemic maxiter of 1750 should
be at least doubled if we want to see all the central minibrot
has to offer.
The calculation time of a little over 2 minutes will pass in
less than half a flash. Only then will it be known whether the
result was worth the effort. To keep risk of disappointment at
a minimum, I recommend viewing the finished image on the active

Tuesday brought lots of sun to Fractal Central, but it also
brought biting winds and a temperature of 25F -4C. The fractal
cats concerned themselves only with the sun, which despite the
outside chill, was strong enough to keep them on their shelf in
the window most of the afternoon. My day was busy and thankful-
ly free of politics. The next FOTD is due in 24 hours, though I
hear we have a problem back at Old Fractal Central, and I may
need to go there on Wednesday to check things out. Until when-
ever, take care, and be satisfied with what you've got.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Blue-and-gold color schemes are some of my favorites. These are
my old school colors, so I rated today's almost totally blue and
gold image at a lofty 8.
The name "The Missing Linque" has nothing to do with the study
of language or the theory of evolution. It is simply a refer-
ence to the arrangement of radiating arms around the central
minibrot, some of which are doubled, while others are totally
missing. The spelling simply makes the name appear trendy, kind
of like the junque (junk) FL and I come upon on our antiquing
trips.
The image lies in what I assume is the Seahorse Valley of the
parent fractal that results when the formula Z^(1.913)+C is
iterated at level +7 of the complex logarithmic hyperladder and
no function is applied. 1.913 just happens to be very close to
the cube root of seven, but this is of no importance in the
final appearance of the image.
The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is brief enough to make
the calculation a pleasure. Even greater pleasure may be found
at the currently active FOTD web site at:
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>
where the finished image is posted.

At lunch time on Monday, FL expressed her disappointment with
the lack of forceful action by SuperPresident B.O. to aid the
oppressed struggling people of Egypt. To avoid another futile
discussion, I left the room. But to me the real puzzle is how
so many otherwise intelligent people could have been gullible
and naive enough to actually believe some kind of near-magical
change was coming when B.O. was elected. (Believe me, it's not
easy learning to be as cynical as I have become over the years,
but the cynical view usually turns out to be right!)
A mix of clouds and sun, with an unexpected temperature of 43F
+6C, kept both the fractal people and the fractal cats happy
here at Fractal Central on Monday. The next FOTD will be posted
in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and fill in the blanks of
life with wisdom, or your life will be a blank.

Does anyone know of a good way to figure out how to set the BLASTER variable that I think fractint needs?
I wondered if that DosBOX program at sourceforge would read it from somewhere or emulate a soundblaster
through Windows Sound System, and the last download of DosBOX I tried had a bad CRC. Anybody got
experience with DosBOX and FRACTINT?
On my last computer, soundblaster information was available when I enabled soundblaster support in the BIOS.
I did not manage to get that old MIDI synth working before it crashed. On my new computer I hav no clue how
to fill out the BLASTER VARIABLE. Also, my new computer (a used 3GHz P4 Duo) does not come with VESA
support, of all things for IBM/Intel/Lanovo to skip, so it looks like I will be running fractint at 300by400by256 --
might as well. When I really want high res, I might as well use the disk video modes, then there's a hope I can
run fractint as a background process (Last time I checked, though, Windows stalls between sections).
It's a bummer for producing videos at 640by480 with color-cycling, though,
unless I can work out how to do it in batch mode ...might as well...I'm writing
the parameter files with a BASIC program, anyway.
An option before me, a few seconds ago, was to install cygwin and compile XFractint,
and I just looked it up, seeing a message from Jonathan Osuch somewhere in 2005,
that it compiles cleanly under cygwin
http://mailman.xmission.com/lurker/message/20051127.140158.0c79337a.ja.html
Can I install Redhat Program Modules (RPMs) under cygwin?
My introduction to cygwin sujested that I had to compile just about anything I wanted,
and if Osuch has a binary, then maybe I don't. I think some RPMs are source-only.
Which packages do I need for XFractint?
I saw fvwm2. I suspect the c or c++ compilers. I am on dialup, although
if it goes to gigabytes, then I can drop by a syberkafay
with my USB key, and download cygwin binaries on that, first.
Oh, and I thot I posted a question about sound support with WinFract.
Anyone behind that project, now?
The new part of this computer that clinched the deal is that the video guard does 1600by900.
I look forward to selecting fractals that make good widescreen.wallpaper.

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
The parent of today's image is kind of a distorted Mandelbrot
set rotated so that its west side faces south. It came into
existence when I calculated the formula Z^(1.81712)+C at level
10 of the hyperladder. (1.81712 is the cube root of 6, though
this has no significance in the appearance of the image.)
The parent fractal has a very large object just north of the
main bay. This cut-off object is too large to be called a
minibrot, so I consider it a sub-parent. Today's scene lies in
a valley of this sub-parent, regardless of what one calls it.
I gave the image no rating, since I kind of ran out of fractal
steam and drifted into philosophy-land before the image reached
its full potential. The name "In the Wilderness" describes my
mental state while thinking of the name more than the image
itself.
The calculation time of over 8 minutes may be reduced signifi-
cantly by resetting the passes to 'g', but doing so will cause
much of the random decoration to be missed.
The calculation may be eliminated totally by viewing the
finished image on the FOTD web site at:

We were caught nearly by surprise here at Fractal Central on
Sunday, when the weather turned almost pleasant, with a
temperature of 41F +5C and lots of sun. The sun enabled me to
easily clear the remaining ice from the fractal driveway, and
also gave the fractal cats a very enjoyable afternoon on their
shelf in the window, from where they watched me at work. FL
added moral support and hot refreshment.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take
care, and we appear to live in a universe of three dimensions
because this number of mental spatial dimensions is what the
human consciousness creates for a field of 'outer' activity.
Theoretical super-advanced aliens probably create a higher-
dimensional mental space for their 'outer' activities. (In all
cases the math is contrived to work with what is observed.)
