FOTD -- August 03, 2011 (Rating 7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's scene lies in Seahorse Valley of a minibrot that lies in
the East Valley of a larger but still tiny minibrot far out on
the main spike of the Mandelbrot set. The image shares both
Seahorse Valley and Elephant Valley characteristics.
I named the image "Fractal Marmalade" because of the original
coloring, which has been changed toward the green side since I
coined the name. The rating of a 7 is about average for these
deep images, but the necessary slowness holds things down a bit.
The calculation time of just under 1/2 hour is admittedly slow.

Heavy clouds and occasional rain spoiled Wednesday here at
Fractal Central. The temperature of 75F 24C was comfortable
enough, but with the rain falling, who cared. The fractal cats
grabbed a couple quick glances of the outside conditions before
settling to sleep for most of the day, while the humans made it
through the day with only a few minor hangups. The next FOTD
will be posted in 24 hours. It will be another scene deep in
the Mandelbrot set. Until then, take care, and do you ever get
the feeling that things are not exactly as they appear?

FOTD -- August 02, 2011 (Rating 7.5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
FOTD themes have been few and far between lately, so I have
decided that August will be a theme month. The theme for the
August FOTD images is scenes deep in the Mandelbrot set.
Today's image lies not all that deep however, just deep enough
to make arbitrary precision math the better choice. The image,
which requires 12-1/2 minutes to finish when arbitrary precision
math is used, will calculate in only 2 seconds when standard
math is used, but with a slight degradation in quality. I have
included two parameter files -- one slow with high quality, and
one fast with compromised quality.
The scene is located on a filament extending from the northeast
shore line of the main bay of the first large minibrot on the
main stem of the Mandelbrot set. (the minibrot centered around
-1.417)
The name "Mandelbrot Affair" seems fair enough. After all, had
it not been for Mr. Mandelbrot, we might never have discovered
fractals. (Well, that does seem a bit unlikely, but the
discovery might have been postponed quite a while.)
The rating of a 7-1/2 includes a bit of a reward for the
coloring, to which I gave a modicum of extra effort.
The calculation time can be either fast or slow, depending on
the image quality desired.
The slow, high-quality version of the finished image is posted
on the FOTD web site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
and in high-definition at:

Tuesday brought sun filtered by high cirrus clouds, comfortable
humidity and a temperature of 86F 30C to Fractal Central. The
day also brought joy to the hearts of the fractal cats, who got
into a friendly tussle that grew a little out of control. The
humans had a typical day, which leaves next to nothing to
remember the day by. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.
Until then, take care, and when will the next crisis erupt?

FOTD -- August 01, 2011 (Rating 8)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is named "Little Lost Child". The reason for the
name is that the parameters were lost when I saved the image in
the wrong GIF format. But do not despair. The image, which
rates an 8, may be viewed on the FOTD web site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
Unfortunately, since the parameters are lost, there is no high-
definition version available on Hal's site.
The lost parameters are not that big a drawback because the
calculation time is over an hour, and it is unlikely that many
fractalists would actually have run the parameter file even if
it had been available.
The image is a scene deep in the East Valley of a minor minibrot
on the main stem of the Mandelbrot set. It is definitely not
the large minibrot, but without the parameters I have no way to
determine exactly which minibrot.
Even though the parameters are gone, I have chosen this image to
be FOTD for August 01 because of the unusually rich, almost too
rich, colors.
Monday was sultry here at Fractal Central, with a mix of clouds
and sun. Thunder threatened several times but nothing ever
developed. The fractal cats would have preferred a temperature
a little below the 90F 32C, but they made the most of it. The
humans accomplished what needed to be done, without incident.
The next FOTD, complete with parameter file, will be posted in
24 hours. Until then, take care, and one sure way to be
misinformed is to watch all those popular science shows on the
cable channels.

FOTD -- July 31, 2011 (Rating 6.5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is one in a series of tests, which is what I named
it. I originally calculated the image with the passes set to 1.
The resulting image took near 16 minutes to calculate, but was
pictorially perfect. The passes=g option was fast enough but
left too many holes in the web. Passes=b finished in 5 minutes,
but totally missed the web. This left me with passes=t, which
finishes in just under 10 minutes, and misses only a few minor
bits of the spider web.
The image lies in the parent fractal that results when 10
negative parts of Z^(-1.1) are combined with Z^(-11.1) before
(1/C) is added on each iteration. This parent fractal is
another of those indescribable ones that appear when double
negative powers of Z are calculated. And since the powers are
negative, the fractal is subject to evaporation.
Today's image is an evaporated one, though instead of setting
the bailout to one-googol, I set it to 10^40, which is still
large enough to evaporate the scene.
The rating of a 6-1/2 is an improvement over recent images,
though still far short of traditional FOTD quality standards.
The image may be thoroughly enjoyed by running the parameter
file, or by viewing it on the FOTD web site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
The high-definition version is at:

Saturday and Sunday here at Fractal central were near perfect
days, with tons of sun, lower humidity and a near perfect
temperature of 88F 31C. The fractal cats enjoyed the conditions
as much as is possible for cats to enjoy a thing, while the
humans had a pleasant two days. The next FOTD will be posted in
24 hours. Until then, take care, and let your mind soar to the
stars. Your body is stuck to the ground.

FOTD -- July 29, 2011 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Sometimes the names of the FOTD images almost take on a life of
their own. For some strange reason, the name "Retrogression
Track", which came to mind out of nowhere, seems so right that
I had no choice but to give this name to the image, even though
the name has no logical connection with the image.
The image is an evaporated one, which lies in the parent fractal
that results when 2.8 negative parts of Z^(-1.8) are combined
with 0.2 negative part of Z^(-5.5) and (1/C) is added on each
iteration. This parent fractal consists of three large, nearly
circular bays surrounded by three even larger irregularly shaped
bays. Today's scene lies in an irregular circular ring that
terminates a fairly normal filament extending from the southern
irregular bay.
The rating of a 6 is another in a string of July disappoint-
ments. We all enjoy those images that rate an 8 or a 9. Such
images are sometimes hard to find however. If they could be
found at will, they would no longer be worth a high rating.
The calculation time of 5-3/4 minutes is a bit slow for an image
that rates merely a 6.
The finished image is available online at:

At this point I am tempted to write a paragraph or two about the
stupidity of politicians on the left as well as the right, but
in the name of brevity and to avoid offending, I will count to
ten and hold my peace.
Typical lazy midsummer weather continues here at Fractal Cen-
tral, with daytime temperatures around 90 tempered by occasional
showers. The fractal cats enjoy such lazy conditions. They
pass the days doing nothing, which is more than the humans can
do. The next FOTD will be posted in 48 hours on July 31, and
after that, the images will be posted every day, as has been the
usual FOTD schedule for 14-1/2 years. Until then, take care,
and before the answer can be found, the problem must be fully
understood.

I'm doing some work on migrating the image computation to a secondary
machine that XMission has graciously provided me just for this
purpose. During that time, the FOTD RSS feed won't be updated as the
image computation is moved. I expect it will be back up and producing
new images in a week or so.

FOTD -- July 27, 2011 (No Rating)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image gets no rating because it is not of my own
creation. I picked it up quite a few years ago, probably from
somewhere on the internet, and found it in my storage bin a
couple days ago. The reset=1730 in the parameter file shows
that it was created with an older version of Fractint.
I named the image "Bad Moon on the Rise". Well, it does show a
circle that easily could be a moon rising behind a landscape of
who-knows-what.
The image was created by the fn(z)+fn(pix) formula, one I almost
never even think of using. But since images like today's are
possible with this formula, maybe I should think about it a
little more.
The calculation time of 24 seconds is fast by any standards.

Tuesday here at Fractal Central brought a temperature of 90F 32C

care, and don't believe all those doomsday forecasts you hear

FOTD -- July 26, 2011 (Rating 7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a very deep one. It lies on a filament that
extends from a larger minibrot that in turn lies on a filament
that extends from the fourth bud out the main negative spike of
the Mandelbrot set.
Even though the M-set has been so thoroughly explored, I still
feel that today's image, due mostly to its coloring, is worth a
rating of a 7.
The name "Way Out and Deep" describes the location of the scene
in its parent fractal, the Mandelbrot set, which BTW is pretty
much the parent of all fractals.
The calculation time of 16-1/2 minutes is within reason,
considering the image's magnitude of almost 10^29. But setting
up and running DOS parameter files can be quite a chore, so
relief has been prepared at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
where the finished image is posted for instant satisfaction.

Sunday brought more heat and humidity to Fractal Central. The
temperature of 95F 35C caused the fractal cats to glue them-
selves to the coolest things they could find. Monday brought
a mixture of sun and clouds, with a torrential shower in the aft-
ernoon. The clouds and rain held the temperature to a more
pleasant 86F 30C. The fractal cats must have approved of the
cooler conditions -- they became active. The humans took things
in stride. The next FOTD will be posted in 48 hours, but in
August we will return to the (almost) daily schedule of FOTD
images. Until next time, take care, and what can be done about
__________ ? (Fill in the blank with your favorite plight.)

Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
The parent of today's image is an oversized north-south oriented
string of large bays, with the largest bay on the south end of
the string. This south bay is also the one that at first glance
appears to be critical. Today's scene is located in the debris
on the northeast shore line of this southern bay.
I named the image "Shimmering Outflow". I can see nothing in
the image that might justify such a name, but the words have a
kind of poetic feeling that gives them validity.
The image's rating of a 6 is perhaps a bit conservative, but
with a calculation time of a fast 2 minutes, the parameter file
will take little time to calculate the image.
The task of running a DOS parameter file may be avoided entirely
by going to the FOTD web site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
and viewing the finished image there.

Friday was a real scorcher here at Fractal Central, with blazing
sun, oppressive humidity and a record high temperature of 106F
41C that made any outdoor activity a misery and life in the air-
conditioned indoors too sultry for absolute comfort. The
fractal cats did what cats do in hot weather -- they stretched
out in the coolest places they could find. The humans simply
took it easy. With more clouds, Saturday was a little more
bearable, but the high temperature of 95F 35C was still much too
warm for comfort, and the humidity was even higher.
The next FOTD will be posted in 48 hours. Until then, take
care, and did you hear about the squatter who was unhappy with
his lot.

FOTD -- July 21, 2011 (Rating 6)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
I named today's image "Reference Standard" because it
illustrates a standard object. Objects resembling the one that
fills the frame appear very often in fractals with features of
both the Mandelbrot set and the Mandeloids created by a higher
power of Z. The higher power in today's image is 31.
Objects similar to the one in today's image exist in immense
numbers on the filaments extending from the half-morphed large
minibrot on the main stem of the parent, which closely resembles
a normal Mandelbrot set. Today's image lies on one of these
filaments.
The rating of a 6 is disappointing, even for me. I guess my
excuse is the hot weather here at FC, which makes one think of
nothing but taking it easy with a cold drink. But after all, it
is midsummer, and laziness is the order of the day. I could
probably beat the heat by moving to Patagonia for the summers,
but the twice yearly trips could prove quite costly. Relief in
the form of fractals is far more cost effective.
The calculation time is a fireball 17 seconds -- fast by any
standard.

Unrelieved heat, haze and humidity prevailed here at Fractal
Central on Wednesday and Thursday, with a high of 95F 35C on
Wednesday and 100F 38C on Thursday. It should hardly be
necessary to say that the fractal cats spent both days in the
coolest spots they could find.
The humans also sought the coolest places.
The next FOTD, which should be a very cool one indeed, will be
posted in 48 hours. In the near future, we will return to the
daily posting schedule, and I'll hopefully get out of the
fractal doldrums. Until next time, take care, and believe the
things you want to be true.
