FOTD -- August 09, 2011 (Rating 8)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's (rather) deep image involves a bit of a trick. The
normal cut-off radius of the Mandelbrot set is 2. But in
today's image I have set the bailout to 3, which causes the
calculation to be cut off at a radius of 1.7. This slices off
the tip of the main spike of the Mandelbrot set, but at the same
time causes strange things to happen to features that would
normally be located far from the cut-off point. Today's image
shows what has happened to a tiny minibrot in the East Valley of
a larger minibrot on the main stem, very close to the abnormally
small cut-off point.
I named the image "Pins and Needles" because of the prickly
effect dominating it. The rating of an 8 might easily have been
increased to an 8.5 had I not been in a conservative mood when
I decided on the rating. The calculation time of 6-1/4 minutes
is quite speedy for an arbitrary-precision image, but then, the
magnitude of a mere 5*(10^13) is barely within arbitrary-math
range. (In fact, the image may be calculated in a fraction of a
second by using conventional math, but the degradation will be
quite noticeable.)
All this having been said, brace yourself for instant hedonistic
pleasure if you decide to view the finished image at:

And then be prepared to make a sincere confession.

Morning rain gave way to some afternoon sun here at Fractal
Central today. A heavy thunder-shower passed over at 5pm to end
the afternoon with a bang. The temperature of 84F 29C would
have been more pleasant if the humidity had not been so high.
The fractal cats noted a stray cat that passed through the yard
in the morning, then spent the rest of the day taking it easy.
The humans did the same.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take
care, and one cannot become a rabble rouser unless they have
some rabble to be roused.

FOTD -- August 08, 2011 (Rating 9)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is named "Wast-Eest". This is not a scrambled
form of a German expression; it's a combination of the compass
directions 'West' and 'East'. I gave the image this name
because it shares attributes of minibrots on both the West and
East sides of the Mandelbrot set.
The outer turquoise area of the 'shield' around the invisible
minibrot at the center has obvious East Valley characteristics,
while the brilliant yellow star within shows obvious features of
minibrots on the West side of larger minibrots on the main stem
of the Mandelbrot set.
All this craziness is explained by the location of the scene.
Today's image lies on the main stem of the Mandelbrot set, deep
in the East Valley of the large minibrot at -1.75, just beyond
the tip of the main spike of a much smaller minibrot.
The rating of a 9 is justified, at least IMO. The intense
coloring, which I spent some extra time on, adds to the value.
But we need to break some new ground if we hope to keep the
9-rated FOTD's coming.
The calculation time of 22+ minutes is slow, but the image may
be viewed already calculated on the FOTD web site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
and in high definition at:

Monday brought continued mugginess and passing showers to the
Fractal Central area. The temperature of 84F 29C was within
reason, but would have been much more pleasant without the
humidity. The fractal cats ignored the humidity as they dredged
up an old toy ball and batted it up and down the long hallway.
The humans had an acceptable day. I busied myself by finding
fractals and watching the showers pass by. FL had a slow day
also. Her garden is at its mature stage, and needs less
maintenance. Actually, now that we have lost our biggest
customer, we have a lot more time to take it easy.
The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. It will be another
deep one. Until then, take care, and the world situation is
getting bleak indeed. Sunday evening while we were watching TV,
we became annoyed at the constant flood of financial doomsday
stuff on one channel and switched to another channel, just in
time to see some noted scientists (rational-thinking Atheists)
state that everything is an accident. There is no God watching
over us, there is no afterlife waiting for us, and that is that,
. . . period.
Hearing the great news, all I could say was, "have a happy day!"

FOTD -- August 07, 2011 (Rating 9)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image once again takes us rather deep into the
Mandelbrot set. I use the qualifier 'rather' because a
magnitude of only 8*(10^19), such as today's, can hardly be
considered deep by current standards.
The scene is located in the Seahorse Valley area of a minibrot
on a filament extending from the northwest shore line of the
second bud out the main spike of the Mandelbrot set -- the bud
just beyond Scepter Valley.
The rating of a 9 is an honest one that includes a hefty bonus
for the extra effort I put into finding the colors. The rating
was also helped by the unusually chaotic yet well-defined
'shield' surrounding the nearly invisible minibrot at the
center. The name "Shield of Chaos" refers to this feature.
Since the image is of relatively modest magnitude, the
calculation time is a relatively reasonable 12 minutes, a span
of time that few but the most impatient fractalists will miss.
For the convenience of the impatient or those with DOSaphobia-
stricken computers, the finished image is posted for instant
viewing at:

Partly cloudy skies with a muggy high temperature of 88F 31C
made for a lazy day today here at Fractal Central. The laziness
was briefly interrupted in the afternoon by a drenching thunder-
shower, but within 1/2 hour the sun was again shining and the
laziness returned. The fractal cats, in keeping with the spirit
of the day, passed the time being lazy. At one point, Cassie
tried to get fresh with Nico, but the big guy has better sense
than to get involved in such activity on such a lazy day.
The humans did mostly nothing, which is what they are best at,
though FL was still recovering from Saturday's wet kayak trip
down the river. The next FOTD, another scene deep in the
Mandelbrot set, will be posted in 24 hours. Another rating of a
9 is not guaranteed however. Until then, take care, and if you
believe that the five physical senses give a true and total
picture of reality, then use your common sense and become a
materialistic, scientific rationalist. (Whatever one of them
is!)

Thanks for posting the links to your nice images: Shut_Eye and

And I appreciate your web page with the clear explanation of the

I felt it wasn't clear enough to immediately know how to go about
using it.

FOTD -- August 06, 2011 (Rating 9)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is a dive into the FOTD image of August 2, which
explains the name "Revisited Venue". Considering the wealth of
detail and the effort I put into the coloring, the rating of 9
is fully justified despite the revisit, at least in my own
opinion.
My first impression of the image was surprise that a simple
minibrot on a filament could be surrounded by such detail. But
maybe it should not be so surprising, considering the magnitude
of almost 10^25, a magnitude at which the entire Mandelbrot set
rivals the size of the visible universe. (The present estimates
are that the visible universe is about 27,000,000,000 light
years in diameter.)
Unfortunately, with great magnitude comes great calculation
time. The one-hour calculation time of today's image should
therefore come as no shock.
But the hour may be saved by viewing the completed image on the

Heavy clouds and heavy rain spoiled today here at Fractal

down the Susquehanna River in a kayak, while I stayed dry inside

little concerned about FL's absence, but forgot their concern
when they caught the scent of tuna. The next FOTD will be
posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and be alert to the
tiny changes around you.

FOTD -- August 05, 2011 (Rating 7)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image is named "Long Time Coming". When you start
running the parameter file, you'll know the reason for the name.
But as always, relief for the slowness is at hand. The finished
image is posted in glorious 640x480x256 GIF format at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
The high-definition version may be accessed at:
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>
though it might take a short time for Hal to calculate it.
The original, now classic, FOTD web site may be accessed at:
<http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/>
The slowness of the image is due to its magnitude, which is a
whopping 7*(10^34). With such a great magnitude comes great
slowness, and it certainly is evident in today's image.
Today's image is what I found on a dive into the image of two
days ago, with much the same colors and features. Since the
image is kind of a repeat, I could rate it no higher than a 7,
which is actually not all that bad.
I have not done the math, but I would guess that at the scale of
today's image, the entire Mandelbrot set exceeds the size of the
visible universe many times.
The M-set is a great example of one-way infinity. Just like the
time we are supposed to enjoy life in heaven, it is limited in
only one direction. It has an infinite depth, but is limited to
a value of 2 at its upper extremity.
The clouds continued here at Fractal Central all morning, but
around noon time the clouds broke, leading to a relatively
pleasant afternoon, with a near normal temperature of 82F 29C.
The fractal cats paid little attention to the outside conditions
as they slept through most of the day. The humans spent the day
preparing for tomorrow, when the next FOTD will be posted.
Until then, take care, and if those aliens from Sirius-C are
really running things here on earth from behind the scene, they
had better take a few lessons on how to run a world.

FOTD -- August 04, 2011 (Rating 8.5)
Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts:
Today's image continues the August theme of scenes very deep in
the Mandelbrot set. The scene is located at the tip of a
filament network extending from a bud on the southwest shore
line of the large period-3 bud on the north side of the main bay
of the Mandelbrot set.
The magnitude of the image is over 5*(10^30), quite deep, but
nowhere near as deep as we might venture before the month ends.
The rating of an 8-1/2 indicates that the image is the best of
the past couple weeks. The 1/2 point is a reward for the extra
effort I put into the coloring.
The name "Rainbow Bound" refers to the coloring, which, if
anything, goes beyond the limits of what is considered
artistically proper in conservative fractal art circles.
The calculation time of 20 minutes is surprisingly fast for an
image of such magnitude.
The image may be seen in all its finished glory on the FOTD web
site at:
<http://www.crosscanpuzzles.com/Archives.html>
without the need of running a clumsy parameter file.
It may be seen in high definition at:
<http://www.emarketingiseasy.com/TESTS/FOTD/jim_muths_fotd.html>
The traditional FOTD web site may be accessed at:
<http://www.Nahee.com/FOTD/>
The clouds hung around most all day here at Fractal Central,
spitting out occasional sprinkles of rain, holding the
temperature to 79F 26C, and keeping the fractal cats alert. The
humans made it through another in an endless string of similar
days, with little to remember for the effort. The next FOTD
will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and is it
possible for absolutely nothing to actually exist?
