FOTD -- September 23, 2011 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image in the Z^2+C Julibrot is a rating puzzle. I have no idea how to rate it. To begin, it's neither a Mandelbrot image nor a Julia image. It's an Oblate image, which means the orientation of the slice is determined by the real(Z) axis and imag(C) axis. The scene is located in Seahorse Valley of the large minibrot on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set. But the actual location is but a small part of the image. I lost track of the amount of rotation, stretching and skewing that went into it. The image shows just two of the bottomless pits and endless spirals that fill the area. All the tiny nodes scattered through the frame are more bottomless pits, and those pits are filled with even tinier pits, to infinity. That's how it goes with fractals. The name "Galactic Collision" came to mind at an early stage of the coloring, when the image consisted of deep blues speckled with tiny dots that resembled stars, and actually did somewhat resemble colliding galaxies. Since then I have totally re-colored the image to the fiery reds that now prevail, though I have the original name. (Perhaps I should have stuck with the original colors.) The slow calculation time of 55 minutes is largely due to the unusually high maxiter of the upper right quadrant of the scene, where some elements have a maxiter of over 200,000. (The purplish band curving around the bottomless pit in the lower left is actually the lowest-iteration part of the entire image.) FOTD -- September 22, 2011 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene that I originally passed by on the way to the 'Primed for Growth' image of 3 days ago, September 19. I return to the area today because I originally saw in it some FOTD potential. The image is located in one of the two East Valleys of a small Mandeloid just west of the main Mandeloid of the parent fractal. I named today's image "Wine-Dark Fractal". The background colors remind me of light passing through a bottle of red wine. The name also creates an ancient Greek atmosphere, and as we know, those classic Greeks were quite big on geometry. The image itself has an overall dark, subdued appearance, with curved strips of brilliantly colored confetti standing out like fireworks in the night sky. The rating of a 6-1/2 could be on the conservative side, but the fact that this is the second expedition into the same fractal area knocks a point off the rating. The calculation time of just under 2 minutes will take the frustration out of the calculation task. FOTD -- September 21, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Crack in the World", meaning the world of fractals. The name points out that the scene is located very near the negative X-axis of its parent fractal, where everything is broken apart. This parent was created when I calculated the expression Z^(2.01)+C at a level 11 turns up the logarithmic hyper-spiral with the 'floor' function applied. (Actually, I think the 'floor' function gives the most accurate values of the multi-valued complex logarithm, but it would take a better mathematician than me to figure it all out.) The parent fractal is a distorted Mandelbrot set rotated about 15 degrees clockwise, so that the southern branch of Seahorse Valley intersects the negative X-axis. Today's scene is located near this point of intersection. With its inward-jutting low-iteration elements, the image appears as though it is very near the bailout cut-off point. Actually, it is very near the X-axis, which serves as a cut-off point in the image. The rating of a 7 is perfectly average. The calculation time of 5 minutes is a bit slower than I would have preferred, but still brief enough to make the calculation no more than a minor annoyance. FOTD 20-09-11 (I am the Champion [8])

FOTD -- September 20, 2011 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image has claimed to be the best of all time. That's the impression I had when the name "I am the Champion" came to mind. The rating of an 8 is well above average. It's nearly of championship caliber, but then so is the team that loses the championship game. The parent fractal came about when I subtracted 1.1 parts of (1/Z) from 1.1 parts of straight Z then added (1/C) on every iteration. These parameters are pure whimsy; the resulting image is not. The parameters produce a very distorted Mandelbrot set with its incredibly shrunken main bud and spike pointing south and its grossly overblown East Valley on the north side. Today's scene is located in a minor sub-bud on the west shore line of the main bay. (The distortion of the parent fractal may be increased or reduced by tweaking the parameters.) To achieve the final effect, I used a very broad color palette on the outer parts of the image and a random palette on the inner parts. The prominent minibrot at the center lacks total definition. An increase in the maxiter will increase the definition of the minibrot but will also spoil the coloring. The calculation time of 4-1/3 minutes is slightly slow, but at least in my opinion, the image is worth it. FOTD -- September 19, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is named "Primed for Growth". Don't get excited however. The name refers to the fractal, not the economy, which is stuck in the doldrums and will likely remain there for the foreseeable future. Actually, the fractal has grown as far as is presently possible, so it can hardly be called 'primed for growth'. In fact, the magnitude of the image is already a little beyond the limit of resolution. The parent fractal came about when I iterated the expression Z^(2.15)+C at a level 2 turns up the complex-logarithmic hyperspiral with the 'recip' function applied. This parent appears as a Mandeloid rotated so that its main spike points south. The most notable feature however is a smaller totally cut-off Mandeloid just west of the main one. Today's scene is located deep in the East Valley of this cut-off Mandeloid. The rating of a 7 might be more wishful thinking that actual fractal worth. We have seen many superior images in recent weeks. The calculation time of 2 minutes is a real bargain, so why not run the included parameter file and enjoy the result. FOTD -- September 18, 2011 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene unusually deep in the parent fractal that results when 0.5 negative parts of Z^(-3) are combined with 0.5 negative parts of Z^(+3) on every iteration before straight 'C' is added. The magnitude of over 2*(10^14) is about as far as is possible to go without resorting to arbitrary precision math. The parent fractal appears to be a Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees and almost totally filled in. Except for a scattering of tiny cracks, only four open areas remain -- a reasonably normal Mandelbrot set where the large period-2 bud would lie, two twisted M-sets where the two period-3 buds would lie, and where the East Valley area would lie, a Mandelbrot set that appears to have grown an extra large period-2 bud. Today's scene lies deep in the valley that sets off this extra large bud. To me, the image resembles nothing as much as a puddle of bubbling mud with a minibrot floating in the center. The breakdown of math resolution is visible at the sharp-edged band edges, though it is not quite enough to spoil the scene. I named the image "Mired in the Mud". The overall coloring resembles the gray-green colors of the ground in the areas that were flooded here at Fractal Central. It's surely not a very attractive color scheme, but I must draw it as I see it. Such unpleasant colors hold the rating to a 6, which is actually below FOTD average. But they say we must take the bad with the good, so why not take the 22 minutes required to run the parameter file. On the fastest SOTA machines the image will probably finish in much less time. FOTD -- September 17, 2011 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene in the parent fractal that results when 1.5 negative parts of Z^(-5.1) are combined with 5.1 negative parts of Z^(-1.5) before (1/C) is added on every iteration. This parent is a fractal in the shape of a vertical string of three large bays, with a 'fan' extending east from the origin. Today's image is located in a small field of disconnected debris just south of the southernmost large bay. Since the scene of the image is not connected to the main body of the parent fractal, the elements surrounding the central minibrot are also disconnected. These disconnected shards do make a rather attractive scene however, raising the rating of the image to a respectable if not outstanding 7-1/2. I named the image "Escape to Nowhere". The name has a kind of ominous feeling to it that matches the rather somber blue background of the image. The calculation time of a fireball fast 34 seconds assures that any disappointment after running the parameter file will be minor. FOTD -- September 16, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a little object I turned up while wandering aimlessly in the depths of Seahorse Valley of the large minibrot on the main spike of the Mandelbrot set. I'm not sure it's proper to refer to fractal patterns as objects, since they have no physical reality and certainly no mass, but then, photons have no mass either and we see them everywhere. (I'll leave it to the erudite physicists to debate whether photons, and all the other sub-atomic 'particles' for that matter, should be considered objects.) I named the image "A New Seahorse" because I've never before seen a similar 'object' in a Seahorse Valley". The rating of a 7 is FOTD average, though with a calculation time of over 96 minutes, the image is over-priced. The calculation time is slow because the image is located quite deep in its parent Seahorse Valley, where the iteration count is very large. Perhaps the most striking feature of the image is its reddish background. I usually prefer deep blue backgrounds, but for some reason the red background of today's image worked well enough, at least for this one fractal. Instead of reminding us of a heaven up there, the image hints at a hell down below. FOTD -- September 15, 2011 (Rating 6.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the debris-filled radical of a minor bud on the northwest shore line of the large period-2 bud of the Mandelbrot set. The image lies at the extreme limit of the range of conventional math, which makes it a very fast one. In fact, the magnitude is so great that breakdown is already appearing, but due to the low contrast along the band edges, it is not very noticeable. The rating of a 6-1/2 includes a half-point for the coloring, and even this rating might be a bit liberal, considering the small amount of effort I put into the color palette. The name "The Inns and Outs" is a play on words inspired by the filaments in the image that flow into the large magenta areas then flow out again. The calculation time of 13 seconds is about as fast as images get. So if the result of the calculation is disappointing, little time will have been wasted.
