FOTD -- December 01, 2011 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal, with its festive colors, came to be when I combined equal parts of Z^(-5) and (Z), then added straight (C) on every iteration. This harmless appearing combination produced a parent fractal consisting of a rather distorted Mandelbrot set missing its East Valley, with flat disks at the ends of the filaments extending from its buds. Today's image lies near the point where the filament extending from the north (in this case northwest) period-3 bud disappears into the disk at its end. Since I think the image is actually a bit better than yesterday's, I rated it at a superb 9. It might have rated a 9.5 if I had put a bit more effort into the coloring. The name "Candied Delight" came about when the image reminded me of a box of the hard candies that are so popular at this time of year. The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes is quite a cheap price to pay for a 9-rated image. But a price is still a price. FOTD -- November 30, 2011 (Rating 8.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today is the last day of November, and we end the month with an image that rates a full 8-1/2. The image lies in the parent fractal that results when negative Z and (1/Z) are combined and straight C is added on every iteration. This parent fractal is little more than a cut-off hyperbola with its open end facing north and Mandelbrot buds along its edges. Today's scene is located in some curious debris just inland of the southernmost part of the hyperbolic main bay, which appears to be an East Valley. (To see a surprising cousin of today's scene, change the signs of the real and imag parts of the p1 and p2 parameters, and change the sign of the Y center coordinate. The resulting image has a different orientation as well as a similar yet somewhat different coloring.) The unusually high rating of an 8.5 is due to the extra effort I put into the coloring. I was actually considering a rating of a 9, but finally decided that the image too closely resembles yesterday's for such a rating. The name "Nothing is Something" came about when I started thinking of empty space, which modern physicists tell us is anything but empty. Fractint bell wake me up a few time last week, i was sleepy and i did'nt find anything nice to look at. At these moment i close my computer speake with meme and wonder this past full of clown thing and gracious moment.. Who is meme?, in french it mean two thing, grand mother and the same thing, in english it can be seen like me twice.. you see like me, who is meme in my clown book of mathematic, meme is a colour full fluorescent alien galactic hand, meme is not necessarly a male or a femal, meme is changing all the time...meme is fun to dream with and she/he emmit fractint bell while moving to the next terminal, so when i wake up with the bell i always wonder if my cosmic comic will bekon thru... FOTD -- November 29, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's curious image was created by a very simple iterated expression -- Z+(1/Z)+(1/C). This unlikely combination creates a parent fractal that consists of a Mandeloid rotated 180 degrees, with its main bay so enlarged that it has reached infinite size. Instead of the expected heart shape, the main bay has expanded into a hyperbolic shape. Luckily however, most of the hyperbola is cut off by lower iteration stuff, so a screen of infinite size is not needed to display it. Today's scene, consisting of very slow, very high iteration stuff, lies near the point where the north shore line of the main-bay hyperbola is cut off. The rating of a 7 seems about right. If I had had a bit more time to tweak the colors, I might have raised the rating to a 7.5 or even an 8. The big drawback with a high-iteration image is the calculation time, which in today's case is a dragging 38 minutes. This will definitely bring impatience to most fractalists. The name "Time is on Our Side" refers to the unusually long time required for the image calculation to be finished. FOTD -- November 26, 2011 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: A not-totally-unexpected shopping spree erupted Saturday here at FC, which left little time for a proper fractal search. All is not lost however, for I found today's image, which is nowhere near the best of all time, but is not the worst either. The image is the third venture into the same parent fractal, this time into the southern shore of the valley on the west side of the main bay. The nature of this valley is unclear, though it impresses me as an 'east valley' type of thing. The effect of overlapping bubbles was created by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'fmod'. At the moment I forget exactly what 'fmod' stands for, but whatever it is, it sometimes creates interesting images. The rating of a 4 could have been several points higher if the hastily-found canary-yellow background had not been so ridicu- lously intense. This over-intense background is the inspiration for the name "Sing Like a Canary". The calculation time of 40 seconds is near the speed of light, and will cause no impatience even for those with the shortest attention spans. The temperature of 52F 11C was close to normal. The clouds were thin enough to let some sun through, but thick enough to prevent the day from being described as sunny. The fractal cats were annoyed by our absence, and did not concern themselves with outside conditions. It's the shopping season again, so FL and I did our share to keep the seasonal spirit high and the merchants' cash registers jingling for a good part of the day. I really dislike shopping, but I guess it's part of everyone's duty as a free citizen to go out and keep the economy moving. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours.
