FOTD -- December 15, 2011 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates an 8, with a full point of the rating being earned by the turquoise and peach coloring scheme, which is one of my favorites. The actual parent fractal was created by combining 5 negative parts of Z^(-1.05) with 0.75 negative parts of Z^(-7.5) then adding (1/C) on each iteration. This parent is an immense thing that requires several outzooms before all of it fits onto the screen. It consists of a sprawling mixture of roughly circular bays and less-circular open areas that converge on individual points. Today's image is located near one of these points of convergence. The tiny object at the center of the image is a minibrot, though due to the many holes that it is surrounded by, its nature is almost beyond recognition. The name "Chaotic Delight" might be given to almost any fractal. Why I gave it to today's image in particular will remain forever a mystery. The calculation time of 2-1/4 minutes will pass in a flash, and when the image flashes onto the screen, those who have calculated it will see that the brief time spent was a bargain. The constant threat of rain produced only a few light sprinlkes. The fractal cats, who always wear their topcoats, had no complaints about the temperature, though they would have preferred some sunlight. I spent the day doing routine things, which make no story worth writing about. FL remarked that we actually sold four books last month. Maybe I'll write a book about fractals, science and philosophy, and actually sell a few. But until fame is achieved, I'll continue searching for fractals. Fractals are as oxymoronic as holes. FOTD -- December 14, 2011 (Rating ?) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image rates a question mark, which means it's a puzzle. Is the image a real fractal or an artifact of mathematical imprecision? The iterated expression that created the image is very simple. It combines 1/1,000,000 part of Z^(1,000,000) with Z^2, then adds straight C. I would expect such a combination to produce something like a circle with a Mandelbrot set inside of it, with the circle surrounded by a solid outside. I would never expect to see things like the two overlapping hairline rings of radius 1, which are centered at the origin and at -1,0, with only a vague outline of a Mandelbrot set inside the ring on the right. But this is just the kind of trick that would be caused by a breakdown of precision. It really doesn't matter if the image is a real fractal or an artifact however. Whatever it is, it was created by numbers, and therefore is at least a pseudo-fractal. The Mandelbrot shape was given detail by rendering the image with the inside set to FMOD and the proximity set to 0.16. The name "Real or Unreal" implies the word 'fractal'. It refers to my uncertainty of the nature of the image. The calculation time is a nominal 2-1/4 minutes. Do not be concerned when nothing but dark blue shows up on the screen for a half minute or so. It takes close to a minute for the detail to appear. FOTD -- December 13, 2011 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: After a series of slow images, today's image is a fireball fast one. As I promised yesterday, the image is a scene very deep in the scallops that form most of the shore line of the teardrop- shaped main bay of the parent fractal. The exact location is the north-northwest shore of the parent's main bay, an area that looks hopeless even when magnified many thousands of times. But when magnified billions of times, as I have done in today's image, strange unexpected things begin showing up, including minibrots. I chose a rather subdued color palette for the image, which holds the rating to a 7 on the FOTD scale. If I had taken the time to find more lively colors, the rating might have been up to one point higher. Much of the color that actually is in the image was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'summ'. The other outside options create renderings that are slightly different though not much improved. The extreme magnitude of over 10^13 makes the mathtolerance entry in the parameter file necessary. This magnitude is also responsible for the resolution breakdown just becoming visible along the band edges. (The minibrots in this area lie deep indeed.) The name "Scallops on the Edges" describes the apparently straight edges in the image, which, due to their scalloped nature and the math breakdown, are not straight at all. The calculation time of only 15 seconds will bring no impatience. The spoiler came when darkness arrived before 5:00PM, which in the middle of the afternoon, and is always rather depressing. But that's how it goes only 10 days from the shortest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The fractal cats appreciated the slightly milder temperatures, but would have preferred a few more hours of sunlight. The humans, FL and I, had another uneventful day, with little happening to break the routine and even less to write about. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- December 12, 2011 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things are pretty much back to normal here at FC today, with the FOTD appearing right on schedule. The image with its subdued colors rates a 7-1/2, which is a little above average. The name "Pushing the Limits" refers to the magnitude of over 2*(10^13). This magnitude is beyond the limit of perfect resolution, causing a breakdown, which is already apparent in the central minibrot. The type=formula fractals do not support arbitrary precision math, but the mathtolerance entry in the parameter file is still necessary because of the extreme magni- tude and resulting breakdown. Without the entry, the program would detect the breakdown and reach a magnitude limit beyond which it could not be forced. The parent fractal is a single teardrop shaped bay that came about when I subtracted 0.5 part of Z^100 from 0.5 part of Z^2 and added the standard C. The shore line of this bay is lined with blunt 'coves' that at first appear to be dead ends. A closer examination however reveals much detail in the depths of the coves. Tomorrow's image will show some of this hidden detail, but today we check a different area. Today's image lies in a small, much more obvious valley near the X-axis at the western extremity of this bay. The calculation time of over 5 minutes is a bit too high a price for today's image. Some may not be willing to pay the price, but those who never see the image will never know what they have missed. FOTD -- December 11, 2011 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the same large bay of the same parent fractal that produced yesterday's image. But while yesterday's image was located on the northeast shore line of the bay, today's image lies in a blunt hump on the northwest shore line, just below the valley leading to the smaller bay to the north. I named the image "Bad Boy Got Caught", which has no connection with the appearance of the image but could raise a bit of curiosity as to what kind of image might be given such a name. The rating of a 7-1/2 is a little above the rating of yesterday's image. The curvilinear features make the difference. The calculation time of 7-1/2 minutes is slower than I would prefer. The fractal cats, who now have two scratching posts in the sunlight, spent most of the afternoon in the sun. The humans, FL and I, spent the day taking things easy before the big holiday rush really gets going full steam. I took a break while I pondered who those alternate versions of myself in the supposed quantum alternate universes might be. They cannot be me, so they must be either unconscious zombies or other individuals. Neither option makes sense, but the things modern science tells us have long since stopped making sense. One thing that does make sense however is the fact that the next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. Until then, take care, and maybe I'm the alternate version. Maybe the original version of myself exists in some alternate universe.
