FOTD -- September 11, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's name came to me Thursday afternoon when FL commented that I should try to develop a more positive attitude. When I heard this I glanced at the screen and saw today's image -- about as dark and gloomy as a fractal can get. To give the image a single highlight, I colored the inside of the central minibrot a brilliant white, declared it FOTD for Sep 11, and named it "Negative Attitude". The image was created when I mixed Z^3 with 1/2 part of Z^6 and added C. The parent fractal is shaped rather like a letter 'V' lying on its right side. Today's image is located on the edge of a valley on the eastern side of the northern arm of the V-shaped main bay. Other than the unusually somber coloring, the image is a pretty ordinary thing. Considering all this, I could rate it no higher than a 6. The calculation time of 1-5/6 minutes is within reason, though anyone in a big rush will find it a bit slow. To ease all problems I recommend viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> As for negative attitudes, I have discovered over too many years that a good realistic, depressing negative outlook, especially in politics, is far more likely to be correct than a feel-good but dreamy positive outlook. Rain was forecast for Thursday here at Fractal Central, but the day actually turned into one of the best of the year, with deep blue skies, puffy clouds and a temperature of 73F 23C. The sunlight in the fractal cats' window was nearly blinding. They took turns stretching out, closing their eyes and enjoying it. My day was close to average. FOTD -- September 10, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: A very busy day on Wednesday means a brief discussion. The fractal image lies in the parent fractal that is created when negative Z^(1.5) is mixed with negative Z^(-5.5) and straight C is added. This parent fractal is a somewhat distorted Mandelbrot set rotated 180 degrees, with a disk surrounded by area of interest off to its west. Today's image lies in one of these interesting areas. Most of the worth in today's image was achieved by rendering it with the outside set to 'tdis'. But even then, I could rate it no higher than a 7. The name "Bubbles in the Void" refers to the appearance of the image. The calculation time of a superluminal 23 seconds means that the image will finish before it is started. This will give the fractalist an early view of what will appear on the screen and give him a chance to decide not to do the calculation. Hmmm....something seems wrong here, but regardless, another simple way to view the image is to view it in finished form on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> I had intended to write some political philosophy here, but luckily I counted to 10 and decided to remain quiet. But I just couldn't resist putting a brief comment at the end. Heavy clouds but no rain kept Wednesday boringly dreary here at Fractal Central. The temperature of 75F 24C was the only thing not boring. The fractal cats had quite a bit of excitement however when two beat-up tomcats met and got into a shouting fight in the yard next door. When the loser slinked away in defeat, the victor sprayed the area generously. I hope the rain comes soon. (Don't ask why.) But even if it doesn't rain the next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD -- September 09, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Philosophy fans check the philofractal version. Today's image rates an honorable 8, a welcome change indeed. The parent fractal is an oversized Mandelbrot set caught morphing into a Z^6 Mandeloid. The scene of today's image is located near the shore line of the northern period-3 bud, which has become quite ragged. The contrast between the 5 lobes of the central minibrot and the hexagon surrounding it is quite striking. It inspired the name "Hexagonal Pentagram". The calculation time of a mere 36 seconds will cause the impatient heart to leap for joy. FOTD 08-09-09 (Doubled Troubles [6])

FOTD -- September 08, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: O.T. philosophical stuff on the philofractal version. Today's image is more a mathematical curiosity than a work of fractal art. It is a scene on the negative stem of the fractal that results when the Mandelbrot set starts to take on Z^13 characteristics. Most of the minibrots in the image have 12 lobes like proper Z^13 minibrots should. The oval-shaped mini- brot in the center of the image however has 25 lobes, which is definitely not what should appear in a Mandeloid of order-13. I suspect this minibrot is a blending of two normal minibrots, though I can't quite figure out where the 25 lobes come from. 12 lobes plus 12 lobes equals 24, not 25. Regardless, the image with its interconnected network of spidery filaments has enough interest to rate a 6. The name "Doubled Troubles" refers to the central minibrot with the wrong number of lobes. Unlike yesterday's slow-poke image, today's calculates in a mere 16 seconds, which doesn't leave time to go to the kitchen and pour a drink before it finishes. FOTD -- September 07, 2009 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal lies in the parent fractal that comes about when various portions of Z^(-1.414) and Z^(-4.414) are mixed together and (1/C) is added. I rated it at a lowly 4 because even after all the work involved in finding it, I ended up disappointed. The name "Cause and Effect" implies that I was pondering some abstruse philosophical conundrum while the fractal cooked. Worst of all, the calculation time of 18 minutes is about 1100 times as long as yesterday's, yet the resulting image is only 1/10 as good. Lots of sun and a temperature of 81F 27C made Sunday a day to be enjoyed here at Fractal Central. FOTD -- September 06, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: As I suspected might happen, FL was seized by the antiquing bug on Saturday and talked me into a trip to an antique emporium down in Annville. The trip was not a total loss; we found just the carpet we were looking for to add to those already in the FC hallway. The new carpet has gained the approval of the fractal cats, who checked it, marked it, then stretched out on it. With little time to do a fractal search, I turned to the war- horse Mandelbrot set and found the fastest fractal image of all time -- one that calculates in nine-tenths of one second on the rejuvenated P4-2000mhz machine. I gave today's image a rating of an 8, even though it is nothing more than a typical minibrot on a filament extending from the period-8 bud on the northeast shore-line of the main bay of the Mandelbrot set. The name "Insense Outsense" can mean anything the fractalist wishes it to. To me it means nothing more than the sound it makes when spoken. The magnitude is an extreme 3*(10^12), but the image still renders almost perfectly using standard math. I included the mathtolerance entry to assure that the program does not flip into arbitrary precision math mode, which would increase the calculation time from one second to one hour. The parameter file is so fast that the image is finished before the video mode can switch to super VGA, causing the fractalist to miss the fun of seeing it generate. FOTD -- September 05, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The philofractal version of this FOTD is much longer. Today's image shows a minibrot of order 1.5. It lies rather deep in the Seahorse Valley of the Z^(1.5)+C Mandeloid as it appears 55 levels up the logarithmic ladder when no function is applied. I named the image "Half a Valley Down", a name that has at least a bit of something to do with its location in its parent. The minibrot impresses me as being just a little better than the average minibrot of order 1.5. All things considered, I rated the image at a 6. At first glance, there appears to be some- thing important just beyond the right edge of the frame. When I checked there however I found nothing but an area of bottomless pits with no minibrots at their centers. The calculation time of 6-1/3 minutes is rather slow for an image that rates a mere 6. I recommend going to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the completed image there. Doing this will eliminate the hassle of running the parameter file. Friday was totally perfect here at Fractal Central, with blue skies, light winds, and a temperature of 81F 27C. The fractal cats took advantage of the sun, which is now coming in their window at a more favorable angle. My day was near average. With a 3-day holiday week-end coming up, I can't guarantee a FOTD on every day, but we'll see how it goes. The next FOTD is scheduled in 24 hours. FOTD -- September 04, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I spent more time than usual writing the philofractal version of today's discussion, so the actual fractal part is necessarily brief. Check the philofractal list or the FOTD web site for the long version. Today's image lies in a bit of left-over debris rather deep in the Seahorse Valley of an oversized almost-Mandelbrot set. It shows an unpretentious quintic Mandeloid, with very ordinary surroundings. The many 5-petaled things scattered throughout the image are other smaller quintic Mandeloids very similar to the one at the center of the frame. Check them if you must, but don't expect any surprises. I named the image "Not Something Else". Who knows why. After putting so little effort into the image, I could hardly post a rating, though it impresses me as being worth around a 6. The calculation time of 2-2/3 minutes is mercifully brief. The trip to the FOTD web site also is brief. FOTD -- September 02, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I'm sorry to let down the philosophy fans waiting with bated breath to read my ghost story and doubt that I saw an actual ghost, but there is simply too much work piled up to write a proper story. Tomorrow will once again be quite busy, so the ghost adventure will probably not be posted until Sep 4. Meanwhile we have a fractal as a consolation prize. Today's image was created when I combined various negative portions of Z^(-1.04) and Z^(-5.5) then added (1/C). The parent fractal is a grossly oversized continent, lying in an infinite ocean, with a bulb on its eastern shore line. Today's image is located deep in this bulb, though the bulb is so large that the actual magnitude of the image is a modest 616. I named the image "Seventh Instar" for no apparent reason. I rated it at a 6 because I don't consider it worth any more. The calculation time of under 4 minutes will pass so fast that it will barely be noticeable. FOTD -- September 01, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Check the philofractal version for a much longer discussion. Perhaps today's image should have been named "High Contrast" rather than "High Energy", but a name is a name, and that's what I named it. The parent fractal was created by combining various negative portions of Z^(-1.1) with Z^(-6.6) then adding (1/C). As expected, this parent is a grossly oversized thing with a fan, several large bays, and lots of fancy rings in the suburbs. Today's image lies in one of these suburban rings. To get the high-contrast effect I ran the image through a graphics program and increased the contrast almost to the limit. A few minor tweaks gave the final result, which despite the color work, still rates only a 6. The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes will pass like a cruise ship.
