FOTD -- September 21, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: This FOTD is late because FL and I took an antiquing expedition to Lewisberry on Sunday. It's not an excuse; it's just an expla- nation of the lateness. Today's better-than-average image lies on a filament extending from the large period-2 bud of the largest minibrot on the main stem of the parent Mandeloid, which not surprisingly is shaped like the minibrot at the center of the frame. This parent was created when I calculated the formula Z^(1.9)+C at one level up the logarithmic ladder when no function is applied. Since time is at a premium, I'll let the image do most of the speaking for itself. (I think it's one that can speak for itself.) The rating of a 7 indicates that I consider the image to be worth the 1 minute, 33 seconds needed to run the included parameter file. FOTD -- September 20, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Believe it or not, we're still in the same area of the same parent fractal. I don't seem able to let go of it and move on. The most interesting thing about this particular area is the unpredictability of the shape of the many minibrots, if they actually are minibrots, that is. The minibrot at the center of today's image however is an every- day Z^2 one, though it is invisible at the magnitude of today's image. Most of the action was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'tdis' and the inside set to 'atan'. I named the finished product "A Brief Diversion" and rated it at a very ordinary 6. The calculation time of just over 3 minutes borders on slowness, especially on clunkers. For those with clunkers or with over-qualified units that panic when they see the letters D.O.S., calculation may be avoided by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A totally cloud-free sky and temperature of 68F 20C made condi- tions nearly ideal for late summer here at Fractal Central on Saturday. The fractal cats took full advantage of the unbroken sunlight falling on their shelf in the southwest window. In my department, the re-do job has been redone and things have set- tled down to about average. The next FOTD is due in 24 hours. I give it a 75-percent chance of appearing on schedule. And a more careful calculation shows that we actually still have 1188 days before the world ends, presumably on 21 December, 2012. FOTD -- September 19, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: We're still in the same area of the same parent fractal of the past 3 or 4 days. The little minibrot at the center has been livened up by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'tdis' and the inside colored a brilliant white. The rating of a 7 is becoming so average that I might change the rating system to make such images rate an average 5 rather than an above-average 7. The name "Terrible Terraces" makes little sense, but then fractals and even life itself make little sense, so why not give the image such a name. The calculation time of 1-1/2 minutes is fast enough to prevent impatience yet slow enough for a bit of enjoyment. Mostly sunny skies and a temperature of 77F 25C here at Fractal Central on Friday made up for the fractal cats' disappointment on Thursday. They enjoyed their sunny shelf to the maximum. My day would have been average if one of the customers had not unexpectedly added a full-page ad to his 16-page program, which made it necessary to re-work 8 of the 16 pages. When the late ad came in, I showed a bit of temper and FL asked if I thought my angry outburst would help the situation. When I said that temper displays only make things worse, she asked me why then was I wasting so much energy. I told her that I had gotten angry not to help things, but because we had to do half the already-finished job over, which put the discussion back where it started. To keep the argument from going in a circle, we let it drop and got to work, me grumbling and FL remaining silent. But I think I should have answered her with something like, "since you have reminded me that anger will do no good, I now realize that I am only making things worse. I have decided to calm down and do the job in a sensible manner . . . and after all, we *will* get extra money for re-doing half the job." Now that the silly "Dear Abby" style advice is out of the way, I must disclose the great news that the next FOTD is scheduled to be posted in 24 hours. FOTD 18-09-09 (Mass Confusion [None])

FOTD -- September 18, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is the third in the same area of the same parent fractal. The confusion is obvious. The parent fractal came about when portions of Z^3 and Z^4 were mixed together, so where does the Z^6 minibrot on the left come from? And what is it doing right next to a Z^3 minibrot? This is not the only problem. On the filament connecting the two large minibrots lies another minibrot, this one a near- perfect Z^2 one. I'm not about ready to try to determine what's going on here. I simply think it makes a rather interesting image, interesting enough to be the FOTD for today. And I'll continue to examine this area in the next few FOTD's. Though I gave the image no rating, if I had rated it, I would have given it a rating around a 6. The name "Mass Confusion" refers to the puzzle of the wrong minibrots. The calculation time of an incredibly brief 21 seconds will make running the included parameter file almost a pleasure. FOTD 17-09-09 (Troubling Triumph [7])

FOTD -- September 17, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The name "Troubling Triumph" refers to my success in finding today's scene, which is interesting enough but has its problems. To start, it's a rather pleasant though slightly gloomy scene in the parent fractal that arises when Z^4 is mixed with twice as much Z^3. But look closely. The central quadratic minibrot lacks the usual 2,4,8... symmetry. In fact, the outer symmetry seems to be 6,12,... while within this range there is little symmetry at all. The whole affair is indeed a bit troubling, thus the name. The rating of a 7 continues the unbroken string of similar ratings. The little mathematical problem does not detract from the image, and with its blazingly fast calculation time of 23 seconds there is no reason to miss its curiosities. I was undecided whether to tackle science, religion, politics or the paranormal in my philosophical outburst today. On all these topics I have strong views, most of which are not very popular. The clouds slowly thickened here at Fractal Central on Wednes- day, but the temperature reached 72F 22C and there was just enough sun at the right time of day to satisfy the fractal cats, who took turns on the shelf in the sunny southwest window. FOTD 16-09-09 (Conquest of Infinity [7])

FOTD -- September 16, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Back in my wonder years I sometimes wondered how long it would take a space ship to reach infinity if it traveled at infinite speed. Sometime later I realized that the speed of light is in effect infinite speed, since at light velocity the spatial direction in which an object is moving contracts to zero, and the trip, however long from our viewpoint, is accomplished instantly. I have yet to decide how long it would take to reach infinity at the speed of light, but I now suspect the question is a wrong one, based on a wrong assumption. One thing certain however is that from a photon's point of view, the photon does not exist at all. However great the distance it travels from our point of view, in the photon's own world it is absorbed the same moment it is emitted. With a magnitude of over 2*10^(13), today's image is as close to infinity as one is likely to come with the MandAutoCritInZ formula and the Fractint program. The magnitude inspired the name "Conquest of Infinity". Luckily, the mathtolerance entry makes such an extreme magnitude reachable. There is a minibrot at the center, but it is far beyond resolution and I'm not sure of what order it is. The parent fractal has Z^2, Z^3, and Z^6 minibrots in the vicinity of today's image, so who knows what lies unseen in the depths. The rating of a 7 is above average. We have had many ratings of 7 recently, so many in fact that it is starting to become boring. The calculation time of 2-1/4 minutes is reasonable for those with some time to spare. Those with no spare time on their hands may escape the task of calculating the included parameter file and enjoy the image by viewing it on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> The next several FOTD's will explore some of the fractal craziness in the area of the parent fractal in which today's image lies. It makes no sense at all to see an order-6 minibrot in a fractal created by combining Z^4 with 2 parts of Z^3, but take my word, in today's parent fractal it does happen. Well, I guess anything is possible in the world of fractals. Sunny skies and a temperature of 79F 26C made Tuesday a near- perfect day here at Fractal Central. The fractal cats agreed, and if it had been a bit cooler, they would have spent the afternoon on the sunniest shelf in the southwest window. My day was average. FOTD -- September 15, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: A rather busy day on Monday here at Fractal Central means a short discussion and no philosophy. But today's image means a moment of fun, and the incredibly brief calculation time of 46 seconds means the fun will come with minimum effort. The image lies in the parent fractal that exists when the Z^2 Mandelbrot set is about half-way through the process of morphing into the Z^(4.5) Mandeloid. I will not try to describe the par- ent fractal, though I will comment that today's image is located in the infinitely divided network of filaments just east of one of the two main minibrots near the negative X-axis. The name "Coming Together" can mean whatever the viewer would like it to. The rating of a 7 means that the image is just enough above average to make it interesting. Monday was a fair enough day here at Fractal Central, though a few too many clouds were overhead. FOTD -- September 14, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Due to an unexpectedly busy though not too unpleasant day on Sunday, today's discussion will be brief, with no philosophical wisdom -- at least not until the next FOTD. The image lies in the parent fractal that is created when Z^4 is mixed with 0.8 part of Z^5 on each iteration before C is added. The parent fractal is a wide open rectangluar bay with a kind of East Valley on its west side. Today's image lies rather deep in this valley, on its southern side. I named the image "Goofy Pop-Eyes" when I saw the eight disconnected pairs of typical East-Valley goofy eyes surrounding the blazingly blue central minibrot. The rating of a 7 means I kind of like the scene. The image's calculation time of 1 minute is brief enough to make the task of actually calculating it almost enjoyable. FOTD -- September 13, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: There is no philosophy today, but I am posting this FOTD to the philofractal list anyway, since there will be lots of philosophy in the upcoming FOTD discussions. Today's image is a semi-evaporated one lying in the parent fractal that is created when 5.5 negative parts of Z^(-2.2) are combined with 2.2 negative parts of Z^(-5.5) and (1/C) is added. I livened up the image by rendering it with the outside set to 'tdis' and the inside set to 'bof61'. The image is quite busy, with splashes of brilliant colors all over the screen. In fact, the colors are a bit excessive, which probably cost the image a whole rating point. The parent fractal is a rather interesting one, though quite difficult to describe in words. Basically, it impresses me as a near-symmetrical arrow pointed southeast. Today's image is located on the edge of the main bay. The name "Scoured Out" makes about as much sense as the song 'Stairway to Heaven'. I can give no logical reason for choosing it. The rating of a 6 however is an honest opinion of what I think of it. Heavy clouds with occasional showers marred Saturday here at Fractal Central. Despite the lack of sun, the temperature of 70F 21C was quite satisfactory to the fractal cats. FOTD 12-09-09 (More Void Bubbles [7])

FOTD -- September 12, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The parent fractal of today's image combines Z^(2.5) with half as much Z^(5) and adds C. This parent is another letter 'V' lying on its right side. Today's image lies in a curious tiny blip on the negative X-axis at the point of the 'V'. The features in this area appear as near-circular holes surroun- ded by strings of smaller such holes apparently to infinity. The deeper the location, the longer the strings and the more holes on them. Minibrots lie at the mid-points of the filaments connecting the holes. The tiny imperfectly-resolved dot at the center of today's image is one of these minibrots. Most of the 'artistic' effect, if any, was achieved by rendering the scene with the outside set to 'tdis' and the inside set to 'bof60'. The brilliant yellow spots are actually the open holes. Being moderately pleased with the final result, I rated the image at a 7. I named it "More Void Bubbles" because of the similarity to the image of September 10. The calculation time of a little over 36 seconds should incon- venience no one but the super-hurried. Steady rain fell all day Friday here at Fractal Central, with a temperature of 59F 15C, which was just a little too chilly for comfort.
